WarnerMedia surprised everyone by announcing that the highly anticipated superhero movie will premiere simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max.
The coronavirus pandemic continues to modify the rigid rules of movie premieres, with unprecedented deals to narrow the window, premieres on PVOD and, now, a landmark decision by WarnerMedia.
The parent company of Warner Bros. studios has just announced that the long-awaited Wonder Woman 1984, a sequel to the hit Wonder Woman, will be released simultaneously in theaters and HBO Max.
The announcement was made by Jason Kilar, CEO of WarnerMedia, who explained that the film will arrive on December 25 in the US. In the rest of the world the premiere will be on December 16.
Even more surprising is that HBO Max will not charge extra for the film, so it will be an SVOD premiere.
As detailed, in addition, Wonder Woman 1984 will be available on HBO Max for 31 days from its premiere. Then, between days 32 and 60, it will be exclusively in theaters (wherever they are open) and from day 61 onwards it will be available in PVOD.
The premiere on HBO Max will undoubtedly be a great blow to the OTT in terms of marketing and attracting new subscribers. But it will be difficult for WarnerMedia to raise more than the $ 200 million the film cost.
The first part of this saga grossed US$ 821.8 million in tickets worldwide.
The sequel was initially intended to be released in theaters in June, but the coronavirus pandemic prevented it.
Finally, after several delays and much anticipation, HBO Max will take the film.
