The partnership, which grants The Mediapro Studio the exclusive first option to develop and produce all Cholawood projects, will focus on the production of content for the US Hispanic audience and for global distribution.

The Mediapro Studio US & Canada has announced today a first option agreement with Cholawood Productions, the production company of actress Kate del Castillo, for the production of Spanish-language content for the US Hispanic audience and for global distribution.

This was announced by JC Acosta, Director of The Mediapro Studio US & Canada, during a panel at Content Americas focused on the company’s production strategy for Hispanic content in the US, which he shared with Francesca Ricagni, recently appointed Head of US Hispanic Content at TMS US & Canada, and Catalina Porto, Director of Content for the company for Mexico and Colombia.

The agreement grants The Mediapro Studio the exclusive first option to develop and produce all Cholawood projects, both fiction and non-fiction.

Cholawood was founded in 2019 by actress Kate Del Castillo and her partners, Carmen Cervantes and Jessica Maldonado, who jointly lead the operations and creative side of the production company from their headquarters in Los Angeles. Cholawood’s goal is to create high-quality, original content in both English and Spanish, with a focus on female and Latinx characters that appeal to all audiences. Cholawood’s recent successes include the Spanish-language series for ViX, Volver a Caer, and the English-language action thriller, Hunting Ava Bravo, distributed by The Mediapro Studio Distribution, which was number one for several weeks on Prime Video in Latin America and is currently broadcast on Roku in the US.

This agreement reinforces The Mediapro Studio US & Canada’s commitment to the Spanish-speaking audience in North America, which continues to be a priority objective for the company with recent titles such as the second season of the series Las Bravas (Max), or the film Intercambiadas (ViX) and comes after the appointment of Francesca Ricagni as head of US Hispanic content, who has led important projects for Apple TV+ and other streaming platforms.

JC Acosta commented: “We are delighted to welcome Cholawood Productions to The Mediapro Studio. Kate, Carmen and Jessica are true pioneers in giving voice to Latinos around the world. With the Studio multiplying its presence in the US, we are excited to partner with them to create stories with Latina and female voices that appeal to all audiences.”

Kate del Castillo said: “I am delighted with this new partnership with The Mediapro Studio. They not only understand Cholawood’s vision, but also the importance of supporting women and Latinos in an industry that is going through such a transformational moment. Only together can we continue to make our voices heard.”
