The long-awaited live-action version of Mulan opens this Friday on Disney+ in a PVOD model for US$ 29 in the US and € 21.99 in Spain. But as of December it can be seen at no additional cost.
On August 5, the same day that the Disney+ landing date in Latin America was confirmed, Disney surprised the world by announcing the premiere of Mulan on PVOD (Premium Video On Demand) format on its OTT platform.
As announced at that time, the film will be released on Friday, September 4 for US$ 29 in the US. Days later they confirmed the international release of the film for the same day, with different prices according to each market. In the case of Spain it is 21.99 euros.
And now, it was announced that the PVOD model for the film will last for three months: on December 4 it will become available to all Disney+ subscribers at no additional cost.
The premiere of Mulan in theaters was originally scheduled for March 27 and was one of Disney’s big bets for this year.
However, the closure of movie theaters around the world due to the coronavirus pandemic led the company to make this controversial decision, which may confront it with film distributors, recognized opponents of the PVOD model.
The coronavirus, however, seems to have accelerated what is already inevitable for many: the reduction of the cinematic window and the exploration of mixed models.
Indeed, and after a public dispute, AMC Theaters and Universal Pictures announced a historic agreement whereby the motion picture studio films will reach the PVOD just 17 days after their theatrical release.
