The Mexican production company presented the docureality Pan y Circo, in which the renowned actor Diego Luna invites different personalities to a dinner “to talk about fundamental issues.”

Amazon Prime Video and La Corriente del Golfo, the production company launched by Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal, announced this Thursday their first collaboration: Pan y Circo.

The Amazon Original series focuses on the ritual of sharing a meal as a space for conversation and gathering different points of view.

The conversations, moderated by the Mexican actor and director Diego Luna, will bring together politicians, activists and different personalities to touch on fundamental issues of universal interest in contemporary societies, accompanied by menus by renowned chefs in Mexico.

Composed of seven episodes, the series travels through Baja California, Puebla, Quintana Roo and Mexico City, bringing a different topic to the table to discuss between the guests.

Pan y Circo opens the conversation on controversial issues in an intimate and honest context, bringing together opposing points of view and positions that often end in agreement.

Topics in the series include: gender violence and femicide; climate change; the decriminalization of abortion; racism and identity; the legalization of drugs; migration and finally, COVID-19 in a remote episode that was recorded during confinement and with different virtual interviews.

“Pan y Circo was born by trying to put together two of the things I enjoy doing the most: eating and listening. The goal was always to make a show that was about the others, in every way; the other diners, the others who live realities different from mine, the others who do not think like me. Listen to us while we share the food, nothing more,” said Diego Luna, whose original idea gave life to this series.

“The table in my life has turned out to be the ideal place to debate, to reflect and share my concerns and wishes with others,” he added.

The first season’s guest list includes names like Gael García Bernal; the Secretary of the Interior, Olga Sánchez Cordero; Dr. Hugo López-Gatell Ramírez, Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion of the Government of Mexico; the former president of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos; the actress Ana de la Reguera; the musician and activist Rubén Albarrán; singer Li Saumet; the soprano mixe María Reyna; the activist of the Indigenous Front of Binational Organizations, Odilia Romero; and the environmentalist Julia Carabias, among others.

In addition, the chefs who feed the guests at the table in each of the episodes include: Enrique Olvera (Pujol), Elena Reygadas (Rosetta), Alexander Suastegui (itinerant chef), Javier Plascencia (Animalón), Jair Téllez (Merotoro) and Alejandra Barbabosa (Collection).

Pan y Circo was created by Diego Luna and produced by La Corriente del Golfo. The series premieres exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on August 7, 2020 and will have weekly premieres of new episodes.
