The agreement covers the co-development and production of original series, as well as the adaptation of NBCUniversal formats for the Spanish market. The first project will be the Spanish version of the Safe Harbor series.

Buendía Estudios and Universal International Studios -a division of the Universal Studio Group- have signed an agreement to co-develop and produce original series, as well as to adapt NBCUniversal formats for the entire Spanish-language market.

In the words of Ignacio Corrales, CEO of Buendía Estudios: “For Buendía Estudios, this agreement with UIS is a fundamental step in its strategy of creating and producing premium content in Spanish for global audiences. An association that unites two complementary teams that they have in common the passion and commitment to tell good stories”.

Beatrice Springborn, President of Universal International Studios, added: “As a studio we pride ourselves on telling humane and daring stories that reflect the world we live in and celebrate local nuances and sensibilities. Working with the best storytellers and talent at Buendía Estudios It will allow us to deliver on our commitment to create more local language programming that promises to captivate and entertain audiences around the world.”

Safe Harbour, an international Emmy-winning series, will have its Spanish version thanks to this association.

Enrique Guillén, Executive Vice President of Business Strategy and International Development at NBCUniversal Formats, said: “Buendía Estudios is a leading provider of premium content in Spanish. We are delighted to establish this partnership and begin working together on a project with the immediacy and importance from Safe Harbour, which tackles some deep human issues that bind us all together”.

For Sonia Martínez, editorial director of Buendía Estudios Series, “In an increasingly globalized world in which real events cross borders, we have the challenge of transferring that reality to fictions that, without losing their universal interest, reach the viewer from a close way and with a unique and differential flavor. We are very excited about this first project and the opportunity that it represents to bring Safe Harbour closer to new Spanish-speaking audiences and culture.”

SYNOPSIS

A group of friends embark on a recreational voyage during which they come across a broken-down boat full of asylum-seeking migrants, some seriously ill. After putting it to a vote, they decide to help them and tow them to a safe shore. But an unexpected event will truncate their plans and mark their lives -all of them- forever.

Safe Harbor is a bold psychological thriller that explores universal themes such as friendship, trust, humanity and other sadly topical ones such as the struggle and search for justice experienced by refugees around the world. The development and production of the Spanish version is the first adaptation project to be launched as a result of this agreement.
