The Sociedade Independente de Comunicação (SIC) from Portugal attended Mipcom Cannes to present two original telenovelas that have generated significant interest in the market. The Portuguese network’s most important offerings are the adaptations of the Turkish telenovelas Broken Promise and The Lady of the Sea.
Carlota Vieira, Content Sales Deputy Director at SIC, told ttvnews that these productions stem from their strategy of adapting successful stories from Turkey or other regions well-suited for adaptation. “It remains crucial for us to have the distribution rights for the version we create, whether it’s the adapted script or at least adapted episodes,” she said.
According to Vieira, adaptations benefit everyone, as the success of the productions also brings value to the original format creators. “At Mipcom, we are presenting two original SIC telenovelas, our newest on-air productions: Broken Promise, which is based on a Turkish format but is 100% produced in Portugal with Portuguese actors. Our other original telenovela is The Lady of the Sea, a story about a resilient woman set against spectacular landscapes. While it’s a love story, it’s quite different,” she said.
Additionally, the SIC executive highlighted that they are showcasing at Mipcom two titles launched at the Tribeca Festival in Lisbon, with Robert De Niro, just this past weekend. “One is a fiction series called Blue, a short-form platform series with beautiful visuals, made up of six hour-long episodes. It’s set in a future where whale life is threatened, and the protagonist, a young girl with Down syndrome, connects with the whales and tries to save the species to save the planet.”
Finally, she mentioned a true-crime documentary also presented at Tribeca, based on an incredible true story about a man who was one of the FBI’s most wanted for over 40 years after committing a heist in the US and escaping from a maximum-security prison. He will have to reveal to his wife and children what he did in his past.
