Andrés Mendoza, Head of Acquisitions & Negotiations, WarnerMedia, spoke to TTV+ about the content he’s looking for in the international market.
TTVMedia, through its TTV+ platform and backed by Inter Medya, presents its Buyers: What Are They Looking For? initiative to find out more about international buyers’ programming needs.
The interviews were conducted through the base of over 5,000 buyers registered on TTV+, a 24/7 online marketplace where buyers can look through catalogs from thousands of companies, and in which distributors can contact them to close businesses.
This time, we present Andrés Mendoza, Head of Acquisitions & Negotiations, WarnerMedia.
What type of content are they looking for? Fiction, entertainment, factual, etc.?
A large part of the HBO MAX streaming platform’s portfolio of titles draws on the content of our HBO and Warner Bros. studios, so what we are looking for is to buy material that complements, expands and diversifies what we already have.
The HBO MAX strategy is to reach the whole family with its titles. That makes us have to expand the range of genres, movies, comedy series, drama, true crime, and content for all demographics. It is ambitious and difficult, because the motto would be “I want it all!”, but it’s all about keeping the whole family entertained.
In this sense, what kind of ideas or stories are you looking for?
We look for innovative ideas, not more of the same. As for local content, it might be series, telenovelas or movies, which also feature relevant actresses and actors who provide freshness and relevance to the content. Euphoria, one of our own contents, is a faithful example of this talent and innovation equation.
Is there any particular content that has caught your attention during the last 12 months?
Telenovelas. Although they have always been a highly demanded genre in Latin America, but the boom they have had in recent times demonstrates their validity. We have been able to verify this in titles that we have acquired from major referents such as Telemundo, RCN in Colombia, Mega in Chile, and Turkish telenovelas, but we also know that they have worked for our competitors.
And any particular content you’ve purchased that has worked especially well on your screen?
Our own classics like Friends or The Big Bang Theory are always successful. No matter how much time goes by, they continue with their magic, captivating different generations and redefining themselves through them. And of course also, the big Hollywood titles.
