At a press conference during Mipcom, Laura Fernandez Espeso, CEO of the studio, revealed new productions in Latin America and Spain from Netflix, Prime Video, Movistar Plus+ or ViX, among others.
The Mediapro Studio has presented today in Cannes the company’s main initiatives to advance its international consolidation, in addition to taking stock of the creative talent, growth and expansion that in recent years have positioned the Studio as one of the main independent production companies and distributors at a global level.
It was during the Media Mastermind KeyNote that Laura Fernandez Espeso, CEO of The Mediapro Studio, held today at Mipcom, one of the most prestigious events for professionals in the audiovisual industry, where she reinforced the main priorities in the roadmap to maintain the growth of the Studio.
“We want to maintain and grow our positioning to continue being a relevant player in the international market,” said Laura Fdez. Espeso. “One of our objectives is expansion in the English market, we have a very specific plan to increase our speed of implementation in the US. We are not going to reduce our production in Spanish, which will continue as strong as until now,” she commented.
“Another of our most notable assets is neutrality: not having a window is a strength because it makes us the ideal ally for our clients in any possible business model, whether co-productions, acquisitions, licenses, alliances with third parties, etc.”
Among the most relevant priorities, Fdez. Espeso has highlighted the incorporation of new direct creative talent, through exclusive and non-exclusive agreements, and also indirect talent through the acquisition of companies such as the most recent Cimarrón from Latin America.
Regarding strategic alliances, she has highlighted the joint venture between The Mediapro Studio and the Turkish giant Medyapim, which is developing the adaptation of The Girl Named Feriha; the content distribution agreement with the Belgian label Be-Entertainment, of which the Studio has already adapted in Spain the formats El Musical de tu vida and Finder$ Keeper$, and the launch of Moonlyon, the production company by Penelope Cruz.
In production, Laura Fdez. Espeso has confirmed the commitment to non-fiction content, with the production each year of 75 shows including documentaries, game shows, information programs and live humor, with a presence on both open television and for streaming platforms, with great international projection.
In Fiction, the Studio has a well-established track record with the annual production of around twenty series, both originals and co-productions, where this year large-scale titles such as Iron Hand for Netflix stand out; Romancero, premiering November 3 on Prime Video; or the comedy with a nod to terror El otro lado, premiering on November 23 on Movistar Plus+. Among the novelties, it has advanced new comedy proposals by Diego San José and Borja Cobeaga, in addition to productions in Latin America such as Primate and Las Bravas, both in their second season, or Consuelo, a new series co-produced with VIX.
Laura Fdez. Espeso has also referred to the Studio’s main international franchise, the action thriller The Head, confirming the start of filming for the third installment of the series at the end of November. Ran Tellem, Director of International Content Development at The Mediapro Studio, repeats as showrunner. Jorge Dorado will once again be in the direction and John Lynch will lead the cast as the biologist Arthur Wilde, along with Katharine O’Donnelly and Olivia Morris. The series will bring together international actors from different nationalities, a hallmark of all its installments.
The news is that the third season of The Head has a team of international scriptwriters, led by Ran Tellem, with names such as the couple of directors and screenwriters Teresa de Pelegrí and Dominic Harari (Loved Ones, Love on Point), the British Rachel Kilfeather (Vikings S3: Valhalla, Red Rock), the North American screenwriter Martine Moore (Bwitches) and the British Pearse Lehane (Doctor Who Confidential).
Another novelty is the location. One of the main characteristics of this franchise has been to confine its protagonists in hostile, isolated and remote environments, where there is no possible escape. In the first season, an international station in Antarctica; in the second, a ship at Point Nemo, the furthest place from land in the middle of the Pacific, and in the third, the Sahara Desert, an area known as Bir Tawil, located on the border between Egypt and Sudan, which It remains the only territory on the planet considered a ‘no man’s land’, a place without government or legislation, the perfect place to carry out an investigation for which there are no rules and where the plot of the new chapters will begin. The series will be filmed in Tenerife and Almería, as well as in Madrid.
