Produced by Telemundo Global Studios, the Hispanic channel’s first original period series was filmed on a 20,000 m2 lot in Cumbres del Ajusco in Mexico, with 11 buildings and 77 sets that recreate the town of San Blas de Baca.

Telemundo released the first behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming Super Series Malverde: El Santo Patrón (Malverde: The Patron Saint), starring Latin Grammy-winner Pedro Fernández and renowned Mexican actress, Carolina Miranda.

The exclusive clip offers never-before-seen access to the imposing backlot built atop one of Mexico’s national parks, Cumbres del Ajusco, to recreate the entire 1900’s world of the legendary Mexican character. Designed by Telemundo’s Valeria Fiñana and award-winning production designer, Gloria Carrasco, the 215,000 square-foot lot was erected to represent the town of San Blas de Baca and consists of 11 buildings with 77 sets, including a church, a bar, a market store, an hacienda, numerous houses and an underground dungeon, all built with extreme attention to detail to accurately recreate the architecture and mood of the time.

“To tell such an iconic story like Malverde, we had to look far beyond the script and let the set design tell its own story by incorporating the textures, color, symbolism and props that represent the era,” said Marcos Santana, President, Telemundo Global Studios.

“This is one of Telemundo’s most ambitious productions, having worked with a team of more than 190 people to erect a complete town from the early 1900s with full-scale buildings that recreate the ambiance of the time. We hope our viewers feel truly immersed in the era as they enjoy the never-before-told story of the legendary Malverde.”

Inspired by a true story, Malverde: El Santo Patrón relates the story of a boy, born in Sinaloa, Mexico in 1870, who will ultimately become a legendary figure, almost a religious icon, protector of the people, the innocent as well as the poor and dispossessed. An original story by Luis Zelkowicz, Malverde: El Santo Patrón is an original Telemundo Global Studios production, directed by Carlos Bolado, Miguel Varoni and Sergio Osorio. Marcos Santana is Executive Producer and Showrunner of the series, with Telemundo’s Karen Barroeta and David Posada as Executive Producers.
