Starz’ premium streaming service has signed a licensing agreement with ViacomCBS Global Distribution for the highly-anticipated series for Latin America, Spain and several other territories in Europe.
Starzplay, the premium streaming service from Starz, announced that it has signed a licensing agreement with ViacomCBS Global Distribution Group for MRC Television’s highly anticipated series The Great for the UK, Republic of Ireland, Germany, Austria, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Latin America.
The new show is scheduled to premiere in summer 2020.
From Oscar-nominated writer Tony McNamara (The Favourite), The Great is a satirical, comedic drama about the rise of Catherine the Great from outsider to the longest reigning female ruler in Russia’s history.
With only occasional historical facts the series stars Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult, Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Sebastian de Souza, Bayo Gbadamosi and Belinda Bromilow.

The series is created, written and executive produced by McNamara and executive produced by Marian Macgowan, Thruline’s Josh Kesselman and Ron West, Echo Lake’s Brittany Kahan Ward, Doug Mankoff and Andrew Spaulding, Elle Fanning, Mark Winemaker and Matt Shakman. The project is produced by Civic Center Media in association with MRC Television.
Subscribers will be able to access The Great, along with hundreds of movies and series, including STARZ Originals the day they launch in the U.S. such as the upcoming premieres of Vida Season 3, Hightown and Power Book II: Ghost as well as critically acclaimed, curated series including The Act and the DC Comics Batman prequel Pennyworth.
In addition to availability on its Direct to Consumer app in the UK, Germany, France, Mexico and Brazil, STARZPLAY is available in Europe and Latin America on Apple TV, in France, Germany, Mexico and the UK on Amazon Prime Video channels and on the following local platforms: in Mexico on izzi and Totalplay; in Spain on Orange and Vodafone; in the UK on Virgin Media; in France on Orange and as Starz in Canada in alliance with Bell Media.
