This agreement consolidates Sony Pictures’ interest in producing in Spain, following the launch this year of the soccer drama La Academia, for Prime Video and the Catalan channel 3Cat.

Sony Pictures Television (SPT) announced the signing of a multi-year co-production agreement with Anxo Rodríguez’s Spanish production company Espotlight, which has developed successful titles such as The Farad and Nuevo Amanecer.

Through this agreement, SPT seeks to consolidate its production and co-production bet in the territory, where earlier this year it launched its first series shot in Spain, the soccer drama La Academia, for Prime Video and the Catalan channel 3Cat.

Spain’s Espotlight is behind Prime Video’s The Farad, Atresplayer’s Un Nuevo Amanecer, and Disney+’s You Would Do It Too.

Rodriguez is a Goya-winning producer with a background in law and business. He produced and exec produced the documentary Paco de Lucia: La Búsqueda. He was head of legal and business affairs on Netflix’s Spanish smash hit Money Heist (La Casa de Papel) and HBO’s Foodie Love.

He launched Espotlight in early 2020 to create Spanish content for international markets. Projects in development include Dime tu Nombre for Prime Video.

Matthew Justice, SPT’s executive VP and head of UK and Europe, told Variety, that this deal underscores SPT’s intention to operate locally in Spain and work with the best local players.

“Anxo and the entire Espotlight team are proving that they have an incredible eye for content, working with some of Spain’s best creators, delivering incredible programs, and we are thrilled to join forces to produce great programs together for local and international audiences,” said Justice.

For his part, Rodriguez added: “We are delighted to enter into business with Sony Pictures Television, this alliance will strengthen our ability to reach new clients and new audiences, SPT is demonstrating great ambition in the Spanish territory with a strategy very much aligned with our own. Under this relationship we will be able to amplify the business strategies of our shows, exploit our ability to package great talent for upcoming projects, and build a stronger machinery for physical production,” he concluded.
