Recognized as key elements of the former Miptv market, which held its final edition in Cannes in April 2024, MIP London editions of MIPDoc and MIPFormats will take place on Sunday, 23 February and Monday, 24 February.

RX France, the organizers of Mipcom Cannes, MIP London, and MIP Cancun, announced that the 2025 editions of MIPDoc (27th edition) and MIPFormats (15th edition) will join MIP London in February.

MIP London is a new international multi-genre content market, screening, and networking event set to launch in the heart of London’s West End from Sunday, 23 February to Thursday, 27 February 2025. The event will be held at the central Savoy Hotel and the adjacent IET London conference centre.

Recognized as the two leading international television business markets for the global documentary, factual, and formats communities, MIPDoc and MIPFormats have been key elements of the former MIPTV market, which held its final edition in Cannes in April 2024.

The MIP London editions of MIPDoc and MIPFormats will take place on Sunday, 23 February and Monday, 24 February. These two days will focus on showcasing new content, gaining market insights, securing global distribution deals, and networking in person. Screenings and meetings targeting the unscripted community will continue throughout the five days of MIP London.

“The biggest international week in unscripted is now in London with MIP next February,” said Lucy Smith, Director of MIP London and Mipcom Cannes. “We’ve received clear feedback from each genre community about the importance of maintaining MIPDoc and MIPFormats in the first half of the year. Unscripted is a growing part of the London events in February. By starting MIPDoc and MIPFormats ahead of the week, MIP London helps meet this demand, gives unscripted buyers and producers a head start on the latest trends and potential partnerships, and further brings the MIP experience to London.”

MIP London complements the existing February events, providing a central networking hub and international gathering point for the growing number of distributors, buyers, and producers worldwide who wish to have a presence and take meetings over the week. It is located less than a 10-minute walk from regularly used West End screening venues and event spaces.

Running across five days, MIP London will offer a comprehensive invitation program, providing free access to qualified buyers.

MIP London is produced by the team behind Mipcom Cannes, the flagship entertainment content market for the international TV industry, which was attended by over 11,000 delegates from over 100 countries in 2023. The 40th edition will take place in Cannes from 21-24 October 2024, with MIPJunior, the annual meeting point for the Kids sector, returning to its traditional slot ahead of the market on 19-20 October, with a pre-opening afternoon on 18 October.

After three days of activities at the traditional Palais des Festivals, Miptv concluded what was its last edition in Cannes, where it first opened its doors in 1963.

“As the curtain drops on Miptv 2024, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to the entire entertainment content community that has been making this gathering such a unique occasion, year after year,” said RX France, organizers of the event.

Perhaps demonstrating the need for a new venue, this edition of the event registered less attendance than usual, with 3,537 attendees from 84 countries, as revealed by the organization, albeit high attendance of large companies from key territories such as Turkey and Europe, and plenty of movement in the halls of Riviera 7.

In its first two days, the event led to several production announcements and content screenings by Turkish companies, such as the presentation of One Love, by Global Agency; that of Secret of Pearls, by Kanal D; Like There Is No Tomorrow, by Inter Medya; or fiction news from ATV, Mistco, Madd or MediaHub, among others.

On the Spanish-speaking side, RTVE presented its big bets, including series such as Operación Barrio Inglés and Esto no es Suecia; while Brazil’s Globo once again demonstrated the popularity of its drama, Pantanal.

On the conference side, The Wit’s traditional Fresh TV sessions were offered, presenting the highlights in fiction and formats from recent months; as well as several talks focused on the future of the industry, international co-production, Artificial Intelligence and the role of women in the entertainment industry.

Eyes set on London

With its 2024 edition completed, Miptv leaves the Palais des Festivals behind to open its doors again in London, with a new name and headquarters, inaugurating the first MIP London on February 24, 2025.

“Forget the showroom, and think more screenings, meetings and networking,” said Lucy Smith, director of the Entertainment Division at RX France. “MIP London is an international multi-genre Mip market and networking event”.

MIP London, which will take place from February 24 to 27, with a pre-opening on Sunday the 23rd, “will take place alongside BBC Showcase and London TV Screenings. However, it is not about competing with existing screenings, but rather complementing them,” she explained.

Prior to its trip to London, the next step for Mip events is of course Mipcom in October, which will maintain its headquarters in Cannes at the Palais des Festivals and is preparing for an edition with several new features in terms of agenda and activities, demonstrating more and more the need to reinvent the traditional events of the audiovisual industry.

After testing the value of its titles at the London TV Screenings and receiving excellent feedback, the company arrived at Miptv to make an international leap with the varied line-up it has managed to consolidate.

And during the event’s second day, the company announced that it has signed a co-development deal with award-winning British production company SandStone Global. The deal will see both parties co-develop two new premium ancient history documentary series together – Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and Vikings, both of which will be presented by award-winning historian and presenter Professor Bettany Hughes OBE.

Elena Antonini, VP of Sales of Keshet International, told ttvnews that the time has come to present their line-up to the world and spoke exclusively about details of their most outstanding acquisitions, such as the dramas Conflict and Extractors, as well as the series of powerful dramas, series and documentaries that they will be presenting during the Cannes market in France this week.

Keshet’s acquisitions team has worked hard to create this varied and powerful catalogue. What criteria have you used to select your titles?

By developing fantastic relationships with producers and commissioners all over the world, our acquisitions team has been tracking dramas Conflict and Extractors and docuseries Earthbound, SAS: Catching the Criminals and Arctic Wildlife of Lapland from the very early stages of their development before they were handpicked for our catalogue.

Likewise, the romantic drama The Best Worst Thing comes to us from Keshet 12. What unites these shows is that they are all highly entertaining, stunningly shot, and universally appealing – while having something unique about them that makes them stand out.

Keshet’s spring catalogue has given a lot to talk about; Conflict and Earthbound have been the two shows with the best reviews in the market. What do you think is the aspect of these productions that makes them stand out from others?

We are so excited to be distributing the format and tape of Conflict, which generated significant buzz at the London TV Screenings and in the run-up to Miptv. It has everything buyers and viewers want right now: a ripped-from-the-headlines plot; a fantastic international cast and script, which is English dominant in a Narcos-style way; thrilling action sequences; strong, relatable female lead characters; and a faceless “enemy” who remains unknown throughout. In an incredibly compelling plot, conflict plays on our worst fears about a proxy war escalating beyond Europe.

This year, you brought to Miptv two of the ten dramas selected for this year’s MIP Drama Showcase, Palo Alto and the sci-fi thriller Valhalla Project. What is the production value of these two dramas, and what are the expectations for their international projection?

As both these dramas are currently in post-production, we’ll officially launch them to market later this year at Mipcom. Based on a best-selling book, Palo Alto is a Mare of Easttown-style crime drama that features a strong and complex female lead whose work-life balance is out of balance. When an additional corpse appears in the anatomy lab of a medical school in the peaceful port of Haifa, police detective Iris instantly senses foul play. This stylish crime drama will feel familiar to fans of the genre while giving them access to an unfamiliar underworld where a bloody struggle is ignited between local Jewish and Arab mobsters due to Iris’ investigations.

Valhalla Project is a six-part mystery drama with two parallel timelines: one occurring in post-Soviet Russia 30 years ago and the other in the present day, with a story arc intersecting across the border of two neighbouring countries. This gripping thriller follows researcher Alina as she joins an international expedition to Finnish Lapland, aiming to access a parallel universe. Her goal is to solve the climate crisis, a universe initially explored by her father, who vanished in Lapland over 30 years ago. The series also holds a strong potential as a format. I feel the journey of the main female protagonist, who is searching for her father while simultaneously seeking solutions to address the climate crisis, is both compelling and incredibly relevant on a global scale, particularly in today’s world.

Concerning your original formats, the gameshow Boom! It will be relaunched as Boom! Heist Mode. What is new in the renewed edition of this successful format?

With great expectations and some uncertainty about what the first edition of MIP London may be, the Miptv organization presented official figures for this last edition at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes.

On an atypical day for what is usually the sunny Cote d’Azur, the rain has reduced movement in the corridors of the Palais des Festivals. However, the movement intensified towards the afternoon, at which time a concentration of attendees was recorded at Riviera 7.

The organization released some figures about what this latest edition of Miptv has been like.

Among the conferences held on this day, the presentation of trends in fiction content by the consulting firm The Wit stands out, highlighting a large number of fictions linked to physical and mental health, such as Crisis, Night of Rapy, Lo mejor que vale and Frank Berlin.

In the afternoon, the Miptv organization once again held a conference at Riviera 8, this time open to the entire public present, where they highlighted the main characteristics of what will be the first edition of MIP London.

This time, with Sueños de Libertad (Dreams of Freedom), the Antena 3 series that has been triumphant since its debut in Spain and has now attracted international attention by making its way onto one of the most exclusive lists: the prestigious consultancy The WIT has selected Sueños de Libertad (Dreams of Freedom) as one of the most outstanding fictions internationally.

The announcement was made today, at an event held in Cannes, as part of MIPTV; one of the key and most anticipated events in the international market.

The WIT has announced the names of the fictions that make up its exclusive selection during the event The Wit Fresh TV Fiction Confereces. A global list that includes Sueños de Libertad (Dreams of Freedom), certifying the great success of the Antena 3 series.

The series is distributed internationally by Atresmedia TV International Sales, who are present at MIiptv 2024 at the Audiovisual From Spain booth (R7.H11).

Sueños de libertad (Dreams of Freedom) is a massive hit in viewership and is the most-watched show on television in Spain. It closed the month of March as the absolute leader (13.8%), surpassing its two main rivals by +5.4 points.

The series achieves 2.1 million unique viewers per episode and over 1.3 million average viewers per episode. Additionally, it also succeeds in delayed viewing with an average of +260,000 viewers.

Sueños de Libertad (Dreams of Freedom) stars Natalia Sánchez, Alain Hernández, Dani Tatay and Nancho Novo and tells the story of Begoña Montes, a woman trapped in a toxic marriage, who searches for the longed-for freedom in Spain in 1958. Love, rivalry, family, friendship… in an optimistic, hopeful story full of secrets.

It is produced by Atresmedia TV in collaboration with Diagonal (Banijay Iberia). Montse García, Jaume Banacolocha and Joan Noguera are the executive producers. Joan Noguera also oversees the direction. Eulalia Carrillo oversees script coordination.

“How do we do that?,” she continued. “It’s complementary because there are more international companies wanting to go to London in February. But many don’t have a base or event support in London, so we can help provide a one-stop solution, rather than them having to organize everything on their own.”

“It’s complementary also because it will alleviate a busy events calendar in that first half of the year, which is needed. And lastly because it brings the opportunity and potential to bring more buyers to London, which will be to the benefit of all.”

Inter Medya is present in Cannes, at Miptv 2024, boosting its powerful catalog, which this year includes the Gain platform’s miniseries, following the agreement closed between both companies just over a month ago.

“We have brought for the European market ten miniseries from the Gain platform and a new co-production we have made with Mega Global Entertainment, Amor y orgullo,” detailed Beatriz Cea Okan, VP and Director of Sales and Acquisition at Inter Medya.

Gain miniseries such as Hamlet, Crinicals (Cezailer), Running Errands (Ayak İşleri), 10K Steps (10 Bin Adım), Duran, The Line That Separates Us (Bizi Ayıran Çizgi) and Currently You Are Free (Aslında Özgürsün) have joined the existing offerings within the company’s “New Generation Turkish Series” catalog.

“We are meeting with many countries in Europe, such as Italy and Spain, where we see a very good acceptance of miniseries,” the executive explained.

Within traditional Turkish content, Inter Medya’s offering remains powerful, now boosted even further with the company’s emphasis on international co-productions, such as the aforementioned Love and Pride, which will show even more episodes during the May event in Los Angeles.

Mediahub partnership with docuseries producer Omava LLC is already paying dividends for both parties. One of Omava’s titles, Stop Border Control, will be soon on a big German broadcaster, announced Elif Turna, Sales & Business Development Manager at Mediahub, during an interview held at Miptv 2024.

“For our clients in Europe we have this exciting news regarding Omava LLC titles, specifically Stop Border Control: we have closed a successful deal with one of the biggest German broadcasters in the country,” shared the executive.

Stop Border Control is a documentary series that showcases the ingenious smuggling techniques and dramatic situations taking place in 15 border checkpoints in Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Bolivia and Peru.

“After this news we will have even more big opportunities in Europe,” she added.

On the drama side, Mediahub catalogue is lead by Alaca and Broken Lives. “They are both very succesful Turkish series and they will be available dub in Spanish very soon,” says Turna.

“Our clients are asking for the perfect Turkish drama content,” she shared. “The channels and audiences are looking for more Traditional titles. Therefore, last year we created Alaca, with the addition of these perfect Turkish dramas elements. We are hoping to take it to as many countries as possible.”
