Produced by Luis Cabrera, from Los Angeles

Chile’s Canal 13 continues to pursue a strategy that combines mass entertainment, brand identity, and cultural content with strong local roots. From reality shows and game shows to documentary formats and new digital narratives, the Chilean network seeks to consolidate a diverse offering capable of connecting with increasingly fragmented and multiplatform audiences.

The strategy is also based on the expansion of its new production hub in Chile, the growth of vertical telenovelas, and the opportunities presented by new digital consumption habits. All of this is under a clear premise: maintaining the relevance of broadcast television while exploring new formats, platforms, and ways to connect with audiences.

At LA Screenings, ttvnews spoke with Cristian Ciudad, manager of free-to-air TV at Canal 13; Carola Silva, from the channel’s Culture department; and Mauricio Huenteneao, head of the International department, about the channel’s editorial evolution, the value of creating cultural content from an engaging and entertaining perspective, and the importance of continuing to innovate in a constantly changing industry.

How have you built the channel’s identity, and how is that reflected in your audience?

CC: As a channel, we’ve always maintained a clear identity and strived to be true to our mission: to accompany, to entertain, and to inform responsibly. That’s our story. We are Canal 13, and as a company, we’ve aligned our programming to convey that in some way, not only technically but also in spirit, in content—always innovating, always trying to surprise, always striving to be leaders. But not leaders in the sense of simply being number one, but rather leaders in the sense that people recognize you as an icon, as an important brand, as someone they choose.

And that sometimes transcends ratings, because ratings are cyclical and fluctuate; it has to do with the weight of the brand. We are a highly recognized brand. In many studies, year after year, we consistently rank at the top as a serious brand, a relatable brand, a very relevant channel. That’s what matters to us. We want to be relevant to people, to have them tune in, to know they’ll find something to enjoy, and to know it’s wholesome television.

That’s also how we strive to innovate. At one point, we were the first to put a reality show on the air, and today we’re bringing that back when no one else was doing it. We were the pioneers again in reviving reality shows, in being the leaders and transforming ourselves once more into the reality channel. This, along with more content, always exploring other avenues. We were the first to bring culture to the forefront, to make it accessible to people with relevant content, and today we have time slots filled with incredibly entertaining and surprising programming. We complement our reality show schedule with other content as well.

We’ve added innovative content like Socios, featuring people who are very relevant to our audience, but now they travel the world and tell their stories. We have a version of them in Chile, going to remote places in an entertaining way, also showing us around, and that has surprised and continues to captivate. I think we’ve also committed to maintaining game shows as one of our pillars, and we have ¿Qué dice Chile?, which has won many awards as a format and continues to captivate audiences every afternoon. It’s super clean content, very wholesome content that appeals to people, entertains them; children watch it, parents watch it, and it’s also in line with maintaining audience loyalty.

We’ve maintained our movie slot on free-to-air television. We’re the channel with the most time slots dedicated to showing great titles on weekends. And now we’re also adding a prime-time slot with movies and major events. We always maintain this.

We’re about to premiere a gem of a program in its second season called El Clan, which features a very important, very famous, very well-known family of athletes in Chile who live in a somewhat remote place called Cajón del Maipo, where their life revolves around adventure sports. They get around on the road, on motorcycles, they ski, they climb mountains, they build their houses.

CS: On May 30th, we premiere this second season of El Clan, now with the tagline “The Adventure Continues.” Why are we doing a second season? Because the first season was a real leap of faith, trusting that the protagonists are very endearing people, the main character and his family. We were truly amazed, because people really appreciated the program.

And what lessons have you learned for what might come next for Canal 13?

CS: I really appreciate that Canal 13 has innovated in this area. This wasn’t the first program; the first was Lugares que hablan, which is now in its fourteenth season. It’s hosted by Francisco Saavedra, who travels throughout Chile, showcasing hidden gems and uncovering the stories of people who weren’t well-known, but whom we now know. Ultimately, the lesson for us is that we Chileans, the country, and the viewers want to get to know Chile; this is a way to discover Chile. People are inspired, and in fact, many have subsequently visited the places we feature. Furthermore, our hosts, those who participate in these programs, present it in a very approachable and straightforward way.

That’s what we want, to make it seem less pretentious, but rather that culture is everywhere, and we bring it closer in different ways, with different types of programs. They’re not all travel shows, either; there are others focused on gastronomy, where we showcase typical patios across the country. There are others where we discover stories from our country’s past. The most important thing is that it’s presented in a very accessible, easy, and entertaining way—that’s what we want to do: make culture entertaining and accessible.

CC: I feel that culture doesn’t have to be unentertaining; they’re not two separate things. I feel that culture itself, and the way we’ve structured our content, has allowed us to tell an entertaining story, making it dynamic and relatable. We can have a movie on, we can have a game show, and audiences choose this program because the way we present it is very dynamic and entertaining.

CS: Starting May 30th, our programming includes El Clan, which is cultural; Lugares que hablan, which is also cultural; and then Siempre hay un chileno, which is also cultural. In other words, for the rest of the year, our Prime programming consists entirely of cultural programs, all of which are running for several seasons.

CC: The fact that we’re constantly renewing seasons allows us to place this type of content in other spaces, at other times, and also to have a very good audience. These are formats that, for us, are reruns that we put in the access prime time slot and that are number one in their time slot. They continue to be a hit, so having content that is constantly being renewed is part of our overall strategy.

What can you tell us about Vecinos al límite?

CC: Vecinos al límite is our current reality show; it’s the first format we’re producing at the new hub. It’s a program that developed its own format, and that format is also allowing us to fine-tune everything we’re going to do with establishing ourselves in Chile with our hub, and to develop future projects. We’ve been generating all the resources that we were producing from Peru; now we’ve brought them here and we’re reinstalling, adjusting, and calibrating. After a long history of producing reality shows in Chile for years, we now want to have our own hub. These were always spaces we rented, and now we’re building our own, and this is the starting point for everything that’s coming up. It’s a very large space that allows us to produce more formats simultaneously, and it represents a significant investment in technological development. We believe it’s a very important project for us as a channel.

What’s new in terms of micro-dramas?

MH: The team I lead made a commitment to promoting this in Chile, to be the first to do it, because Chile has a very strong telenovela culture. There’s a long-standing tradition of watching telenovelas at a specific time. But that tradition was lost, or in some way, monopolized by one particular channel, and other channels stopped producing their own shows.

With vertical series, the goal is to reach an audience that’s very difficult to win over—it’s very diverse and broad—in order to capture them with shorter stories that have a different pace. This also allows the audience to watch them for free, which is very important when launching them.

Canal 13 was the first channel to launch this format, and thanks to that, we now have competition, because other producers have also decided to launch their own vertical productions. We’re still eager to continue this format throughout the year; we already have the stories ready for this year—10 in total. We’re currently airing the fifth one, which has already been released. They’re also available on the Canal 13 Go app, which is also very important.

The team is working very hard to promote this format. There’s an interesting project we’d like to share more about, but there will be surprises in what we reveal on this vertical platform.

Is this the gateway to micro-drama for a new audience? How do you see this as part of the strategy?

MH: This opens a window so that in the future, not only dramatic series will be in this format, but probably other programs or even spin-offs of existing programs as well. The goal is to first diversify the content already seen on broadcast television, and then reach audiences who are glued to their devices 24/7, glued to them all day long, and who also need content that engages them in a different way than traditional TV. That’s a challenge. I think vertical series have opened this window, they’ve strengthened it, and we want to continue strengthening it. But at the same time, we’re going to add other types of content. The vertical series are on the same Instagram account, so people can access them there, but also through the Canal 13 Go app, which also features a lot of original, Latin American content, and of course, what’s happening on social media, which people can also watch there.

It’s been a very challenging project, a real gamble. Because obviously, the revenue a new project brings to a channel isn’t the same as a long-running project. And people need to be more informed; we have to educate them through their devices, and that involves advertising, sponsorships, and so on. But we’ve already completed the first phase of work thanks to the hard work of the team behind it, and the excellent vision of the team that proposed and made it possible.

Finally, what were your objectives for this event in Los Angeles?

CC: Something I really value about our channel is that it never loses sight of the fact that we’re a free-to-air television channel. And free-to-air television has to cater to diverse audiences. Audiences that are dynamic, audiences that change, audiences that are drifting away from television, others that are tuning in, others that don’t want to drift away and want to keep watching, others that want it to survive, others that want it to adapt. So, in that sense, the channel offers a content lineup that has to be quite dynamic and always subject to the changes in the industry. Investing in these kinds of global industry events, where you can buy films, adapt them, sell them, learn about them, see a script, hear feedback, and get involved, taking that idea to bring it to life on our channel and on screen, I think that’s challenging, and that’s why Canal 13 participates in these kinds of events.

And that’s why we have someone from the culture and entertainment sector, someone from programming, someone from contracts and content in international formats, who can give us a much broader perspective on what can happen here. I think it’s important not to downplay it, even though people often say that the television industry has changed, that it’s declining, that there’s less and less of it. I believe that the few of us who remain and persist in this are the ones who love it the most.

We have to always keep that in mind and embrace it, understand it, import it, adapt it, and keep making more television. I think that’s what’s important about these kinds of meetings.

And on the other hand, it’s also about always being open to new opportunities that can program innovative projects that allow us to surprise our audience. I think we’re always open to that. And also, it’s not just about building loyalty, but we have a responsibility to our audience. They expect things from us. They expect us to deliver excellence, whether in production levels or content. And events like LA Screenings allow you to be present, share, and interact with different players in this industry who are always pushing you to innovate, to surprise, to take risks, and to seize opportunities.

Produced by Luis Cabrera and Ana Paula Carreira, from Miami

Canal 13 closed 2025 as the top-ranked network in Chilean primetime, in part thanks to the success of its reality show Mundos Opuestos, which yesterday was honored with a Latin Rose d’Or Award. The network kicks off 2026 with a solid strategy aimed at strengthening its schedule with new reality shows, now produced in Chile, and with a genre in which it has been a pioneer: miniseries-style microdramas.

Rodrigo Correa, Canal 13 Chile’s Commercial Director of Content, told ttvnews during Content Americas, where the company is showcasing its content portfolio, that “Mundos Opuestos belongs to a highly competitive genre like reality shows, which have become our spearhead, especially in primetime, where we already have a very clearly defined strategy.”

Since it was originally developed with Sergio Nakazone, and thanks to the evolution the program has undergone -now in the hands of Marcos Gorban and Cooking Media, along with Rodrigo Bustos- Mundos Opuestos has managed to remain competitive and maintain a strong connection with audiences. “Above all, it has allowed us to remain the reality channel, which continues to bring us audience, engagement, and different elements we’re looking for as a television network that connects with viewers,” Correa said.

The executive also revealed that the next reality show they are preparing, Vecinos al Límite, will be produced in Chile—a major shift after years of producing in Peru. “A teaser was recently released in Chile; by the end of the month we’ll be holding a massive casting call, which has been a real success. It’s a new format, and it’s generating a lot of expectation and interest wherever we’ve presented it, especially because it will be produced in Chile,” Correa noted.

Correa also highlighted titles such as El Clan: “These are contents that have also earned international awards,” he said. “We would love for this title to continue traveling.”

For her part, Adriana Weber, Product Manager at Canal 13, noted that Mundos Opuestos is a brand that has traveled internationally and delivered very strong results. “It continues to prove and reaffirm how powerful that brand and that format are. And that’s what we want to replicate with the upcoming reality shows. With Vecinos al Límite, we’re confident it will be another success, another milestone, and another Canal 13 flag to keep adding production and moving forward,” she stated.

The executive emphasized the network’s important position in the region. “We can’t stop producing, and we are pioneers. We’re arriving at Content Americas at a mature point after a 2025 period that brought us many successes,” she said.

Pioneers in Microdramas

When it comes to microdramas or mininovelas, Canal 13 has set the pace in the region. “Last year we launched two mininovelas, and they delivered excellent results, with more than 25 million views, which leaves us with a well-paved path to continue developing this genre,” Correa explained.

Canal 13’s Commercial Director of Content added that the company is seeking partnerships and faces an important challenge in monetizing mininovelas. “It’s a genre that is very much in vogue today, but the idea is to sustain it. To do that, we need to build partnerships, develop financing models, and above all, deliver high-quality content. We’ve already announced that this year we’ll be launching 10 new mininovelas,” Correa concluded.

Produced by Luis Cabrera, from Cannes, France

At the beginning of last September, Canal 13 Chile announced a restructuring of its management, with the goal of further strengthening its value chain and its content. Under this new structure, the Programming Department was now led by Pamela Díaz Sanhueza, who until then served as Executive Producer of the morning show Tu Día, since in 2022.

Just one month after her appointment, the executive was present at this edition of Mipcom in Cannes to learn firsthand about industry trends and promote the channel’s content in the international market.

“It’s been a super entertaining market,” the executive began in conversation with ttvnews from the event. “I was the executive producer of a morning show, so I already had some knowledge of the business. But coming here has given me a whole new influx of new formats, new ideas, new ways of producing, potential partnerships… It’s been very interesting, a very intense way to learn.”

Regarding the challenges and objectives of her new role, the executive emphasized that “Channel 13 is the reality TV channel,” outlining her strategy at the helm of programming.

“That’s what characterizes us, and we want to continue generating reality shows. They can be adaptations, they can be IPs from other countries, or they can be our own IPs, which we’re specializing in,” she explained.

“For example, Mundos opuestos is our own IP. It was created more than 10 years ago, and this resurgence has brought us many, many satisfactions. It’s a consistent, solid product, and it’s proven that now in the competition we’re once again in,” she emphasized. “You can tell the coexistence is real, the competition is real, and the technical quality is unsurpassed.”

This commitment to quality formats responds to the demand of the Chilean public, the executive explained. “It’s a very competitive market, and the Chilean public is very demanding. We always have to be looking for new things, new ideas, and adding a twist to ideas.”

“And also making them multiplatform, that’s what we’re aiming for now: generating content not just for streaming, not just for social media or the internet, but covering everything. And to do that, we have new ideas, like El Clan, which is also a new idea, and like Mundos opuestos, which is our own IP,” she said.

“The public has become hooked on us because these are products designed for the Chilean public. But they also have great potential in international markets because they are very solid products. El Clan is a family-oriented product, an adventure, that showcases nature and respect for communities; it’s a family program. Socios por el mundo is also a program for the whole family, and Mundos opuestos is as well,” she explained.

“So, Canal 13 is a family-oriented channel, and it’s a safe place, in turbulent times around the world and everywhere. It’s a safe place for the audience. And it’s a safe place for brands, too, to gain interest in our screens. So, all this combination has put us in a good position, and it distinguishes us as a family channel, one that everyone can participate in and watch as a family,” she explained.

Adding to the examples, the executive highlighted the Family Feud format, which airs in Chile as ¿Qué dice Chile?, and which “has managed to bring the family back together in front of the television.”

“We never stop connecting with the audience,” she concluded.

*Produced by Luis Cabrera, from Los Angeles

As is often the case with major milestones, Canal 13 Chile turned 65 last year, and it set out to undergo a brand and strategy change to face the next 65 years with a renewed outlook.

“We wanted to make a change and approach the coming years with a different purpose,” Cristián Ciudad Cueto, the Chilean channel’s broadcast TV manager, began in a conversation with ttvnews at a recent edition of LA Screenings Independents.

“That led us to build a new brand, change the logo, and make it somewhat more relatable, reflecting the attributes we wanted to express with this change of purpose: to transform and enrich people’s lives through content and platforms that responsibly inform and entertain the public,” he continued. “And we do that through various programs.”

Within its diverse programming lineup, the executive highlighted the morning program Tu día, the recently released La tarde es nuestra, the format Hay que decirlo, and the local adaptation of Family Feud -¿Qué dice chile?- which completed a new season with great success.

“And then the prime-time reality shows, which have regained their leadership in the channel’s programming. We’ve been the prime-time leader for two years,” he explained. “We wanted to return to the path of being the reality channel, with top-level content, high production standards, and highly relevant stories. Our reality shows seek to tell stories that people follow. The way we show these stories is very entertaining. What we create are instances, spaces where circumstances occur and we bring together disparate people, and it’s a representation of reality.”

Within the reality genre, the executive highlighted the upcoming June 1 premiere of a new version of Mundos Opuestos, “which has been one of the most successful on Chilean TV.”

“We’re bringing it back, thinking about the future of television and how this type of content is consumed today. We believe it’s a version that will dazzle and that people will love.”

“And that’s in addition to the premieres we have in cultural spaces, because we’ve brought entertaining travel content. And also a new season of Siempre hay un chileno, which shows how different Chileans live together around the world. It’s a way to showcase our idiosyncrasies and how they adapt to different spaces,” he added.

“Our daily challenge is always trying to reach as many people as possible in a massive and cross-cutting way. We’re focused on always having the best content,” he concluded.

In an industry as evolving as the entertainment industry, it is imperative to stay one step ahead of the latest trends and know what the international market demands regarding content.

To this end, ttvnews presents the Buyers: What are buyers looking for? initiative to learn first-hand about the programming needs of buyers around the world.

This time, we spoke to Alexis Zamora, Content Manager Canal 13 in Chile:

Where do you see the greatest growth potential for the company today, and how is this reflected in your programming strategy?

We have been looking for several slots that were down, so we made a strategy with the programming team to look for formats to raise each slot, prime time, and afternoon.

Thus, we created a format that has been quite successful, which is a gossip and showbiz format, which comes along with the reality content because it generates a lot of new content, which is consumed in networks and digitally.

The entertainment format takes the content of reality shows and brings it to an audience of a different time slot. From this project, show business returned to Chile, which had been missing for a long time.

This allowed us to look for time slots on weekends and evenings, and, in prime time, it is the reality shows that have led us to success, especially in changing the world according to the format being broadcast.

What type of content is most in demand by your audience today? It can be a genre or a particular narrative theme.

We have gone through a farm format such as Tierra Brava, and even a period reality show such as Palabra de honor, and today we have what we have on the air, which is a kind of military reformatory. So, it has happened that the public has been entertained and has been changing through three formats or three different worlds.

Next year, we want to make a change of world, a big change, although the reality show will be maintained so that the public does not stop being present all the time.

The Chilean public celebrates novelty change. They ask us a lot to change the participants of the reality shows, to premiere faces that are not known, and we feel that the Chilean public is very demanding in that sense. We call ourselves the channel of reality shows, because we have a great trajectory over time, making them more demanding with us.

We have to be attentive and do a severe job of delivering novelty to the formats that we are always premiering. That is what we have seen, and the public appreciates it.

What kind of content formats or genres do you look for at industry events?

We propose the content, the content is scheduled, and the strategy is carried out, but it is not always what is expected. It is always important to have recent acquisitions, to go and fight for telenovela formats, fiction, and game shows, that are willing to be made in the factory and adapted.

This year, we are planning to have a fiction format. A series that had only been aired on ViX about the life of Gloria Trevy was very successful in the second slot after the reality show, and in that same time slot, we put the Chilean fiction slot.

We are talking with Caracol. We like biopics and the stories of celebrities such as Vicente Fernández. Furthermore, we have had Celia Cruz’s story, and it has served us very well. We are always looking for formats of this type.

What content would you highlight among those that worked best for the company in 2024? It could be by rating or any other factor you want to highlight.

Two years ago, we were in fourth place. Today, we are competing for first place for a long time. In access, which three years ago we had a perfect second place, delivering the newscast very well, we added a game show, which is well recognized, so that it would have a better delivery.

We went to prime time much better. To that, we added in 2024 the premiere of a fiction that we had kept, and we also achieved that the scope of the good prime time performance reached almost three-time slots, from 10:30 p.m. to 12:00 and then extended until 1:00 in the morning.

What we wanted was for the agent to turn off the TV with the channel to go to sleep and wake up with the channel in another important time slot. Those slots made us have a very good 2024 overall, and that allowed us to have better reach with our competition last year.

*By Luis Cabrera, Ana Paula Carreira and Fernando Moreno, from Miami, USA

In 2024, Channel 13 consolidated its position within Chilean broadcast television, with the help of great productions in multiple genres.

“Our channel today celebrates 65 years of producing high-quality content, good stories,” summarized Adriana Weber, Product Manager of the Chilean channel, in conversation with ttvnews at Content Americas, where they are presenting their latest developments for the international market.

“In this Content Americas we are bringing a very broad content portfolio, with scripted and unscripted content available to clients,” detailed the executive.

Leading the scripted catalog is one of the great successes of Chilean TV last year, Secretos de familia, which broke viewing records on the channel at its premiere and continued to grow throughout its broadcast.

“We are premiering our fiction Secretos de familia in 2024, with which we are very happy. We were able to broadcast it on our channel and at the same time on Prime Video,” said the executive.

In addition, the channel continues with its reality shows, which have allowed it to compete in highly competitive time slots in the country. “We are also happy with our reality shows, always leading the audiences,” said Weber. “And also with our documentary series,” she added.

“We are producing new stories and new content for clients every year. We are very happy to welcome them here in Miami and continue collaborating towards the future,” she concluded.

*By Luis Cabrera, Fernando Moreno and Ana Paula Carreira, from Miami, USA

“We are the only channel in Chile that in 2024 grew in market share and audience compared to 2023.” This is how Francisco Fulla, COO of Canal 13, summed up what was a great year for the Chilean channel.

“In the morning, with a fairly significant growth, we went from fourth a few years ago to fighting for first place. In access prime, where we had a good second place years ago, we added this program to the newscast, Family Feud. A habit was created where we have a better performance in prime time. And to that we added in 2024 a fiction that we had not released, we had it saved, and we made the reach of the good performance of prime time extend to almost three time slots. We wanted as a strategy where people would turn off the TV with our channel and wake up the next day also with the channel. This made us have a good 2024 in general,” added Alexis Zamora, Content Manager of Canal 13.

In dialogue with ttvnews from the new edition of Content Americas in Miami, the executives explained how this great achievement positions them for what will be a 2025 of big bets.

“The final part of 2024 ended in a very strong competitive environment on the four prime-time broadcast TV channels, something that has not happened for many years. And it is something that challenges us to see how we are going to face this 2025,” said Fulla.

“We have a programming strategy planned for 2025/26, and we are going to improve details within that same schedule. We made a decision to compete with programming that was stripped down, massive, transversal and to reach the largest possible audience, leaving aside the big events in pursuit of a strategy of keeping the audience captive for longer during the year,” he continued. “What has happened is that other channels have responded strongly by taking on these sporting events or festivals, which are formats that last a short time but that bring in robust audiences. And that forces us to take charge from now on of incorporating these types of elements into our schedule.”

“In prime time, reality shows are what has led us to success, moving from formats like Tierra Brava to others like Palabra de honor… the public has been entertained and has been changing to various different formats. We want to go next year to make a change around maintaining a reality show, but making a profound change of world, so that the public does not stop being present. Chile asks a lot for novelty, for the elements of the format to change,” explained the Content Manager.

And it is these successful reality shows that have allowed Canal 13 to also extend beyond linear TV to other platforms and business models.

“Furthermore, looking ahead to 2025 we are developing a strategy that is not only about broadcast TV, but we want to attract the largest possible audience to the C13 ecosystem, not only on broadcast TV but also digital and other lines of business that we are developing. The idea is that we can reach the audience on different platforms. We have good digital numbers and we are trying to combine the work to generate synergies. For example, we have nighttime reality shows that are not only doing well on broadcast TV but also on digital. We are convinced that this is what we have to achieve today.”

“As Canal 13 we have established that content must always be at the center of the decisions we make. We have the challenge of incorporating other areas and ways of presenting content from the open market. The broadcast TV market has decreased in Chile in the last decade, which forces you to look for other commercial opportunities and other platforms such as digital. It is not that people do not want to consume content, but that they consume it at other times and in other ways. For this reason, for example, we develop digital content, such as a reality channel that offers extended content of what is seen on broadcast TV. We have also made a strong incursion into Reacts, where one can see live what happens in reality shows along with the reaction of a panel, where we have more than 100,000 views every night,” he concluded.

This Monday, January 6, after Teletrece tarde, Chile’s Canal 13 will renew its afternoon slot by premiering a new Turkish fiction that promises to deliver a fun and tender afternoon: Mamá por accidente.

Produced in 2019 by O3 Medya for Star TV, and distributed internationally by Eccho Rights as My Sweet Lie, the series was an immediate success and became the highest-performing drama series of the summer in Turkey that year.

Originally titled Benim Tatlı Yalanım, the Ottoman production tells the story of Meyat, an attractive middle-aged man who has raised his daughter Kaira completely alone after her mother abandoned him. All these years he has made the girl believe that her mother is away helping other children in Africa, and that she will return soon, sending letters to the girl written by him and passing them off as if she were his mother to whom he sends them.

One day, the young father meets Suna, a funny young woman with some financial problems and owner of a coffee shop. After several misunderstandings, both decide to become accomplices, and make the girl believe that Suna is her mother.
