Competing with its comedy series José Piedra, un tipo con mala suerte, one of only six selected from over 100 applicants for the event’s copro pitch, Scarpetta is preparing to make a strong impression in Miami.

Described as “the first Latin feel-good comedy, where bad luck goes viral,” José Piedra, un tipo con mala suerte, from Scarpetta Media, is one of only six finalist projects competing this week at the Content Americas Copro Pitch.

Chosen from over a hundred proposals, Scarpetta is confident the series will shine this Tuesday at its presentation in Miami.

“We were selected from over 100 projects with this great comedy,” said Jonathan Wul, co-founder and CEO of Scarpetta Media, in an interview with ttvnews on the first day of the event.

“Written more than 15 years ago, it’s a comedy about second chances. For us, it’s a second chance to be able to show it here,” he explained. “We updated it, renewed it, and aimed it more at a US Hispanic and Mexican audience. Tomorrow we’ll present it to a jury of six people, and on Thursday we’ll know who the winner is.”

The series revolves around José Piedra, who was born in such an absurd accident that his family decided that “bad luck came with him.” Thirty-five years later, the phrase still defines his life: a father mired in an inexplicable depression, an aunt obsessed with viral rituals to cleanse her energy, and a long trail of lost jobs caused by setbacks that borders on the comically tragic.

In addition to José Piedra, Scarpetta continues working on other important projects. “Besides the series, we acquired the rights to Tangalanga to do a remake with two verticals,” the executive highlighted.

“One is digital, for the typical prank call, targeting a younger audience. And then there’s the unscripted, semi-scripted side, where his nephew finds his prank manual and does a revival.”

Dr. Tangalanga’s nephew seeks to bring back the legendary Dr. Tangalanga character, reinterpreted by a young actor who maintains his spirit, tone, and comedic intelligence. We’re not looking for an imitation, but a reincarnation: someone who can convey that essence in a new, modern, and viral context.

“And we’re also continuing with formats like Don’t Show Your Pants, for which we acquired the rights a year ago,” he concluded.
