Produced and co-written by Leticia Tonos, the film stars Julietta Rodriguez and David Maler, and will be distributed internationally by RMVISTAR.
RMVISTAR, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, has secured worldwide rights to mystery-laced film Jupía from producer and co-writer Leticia Tonos.
The film stars Julietta Rodriguez, who appeared in La Hija Natural and El Hombre que cuida, alongside David Maler, whose credits include La Familia Reyna and Reinbou. Rodriguez is also a co-producer on the film.
The investigation into the murder of the wife and the disappearance of the daughter of police investigator Tomas Garcia (Maler) has led him to a dilapidated nursing home on the outskirts of the city, where he is confronted with Atabey (Rodríguez), an enigmatic nurse with mysterious powers.
The film is inspired by the Taino legends of the Caribbean region, and shows how “these myths influence our present in unexpected ways.” Tonos and Rodriguez said they are confident that “the lovers of this genre will have the opportunity to enjoy a fresh and visually striking film that will take them to the depths of unexplored exotic legends.”
Tonos’ directorial debut, La Hija Natural (2011), won the audience award at the Chicago Latino Film Festival, the best fiction prize at the San Jose Film Festival, and the audience award at the Global Dominican Film Festival. Her second feature, Cristo Rey (2013), was selected for the Toronto Film Festival. Both films were the Dominican Republic’s entries at the Oscars.
She captured a La Silla Award for best director for her next film, Juanita (2018). Her A State of Madness (2020) was also the Dominican Republic’s entry at the Oscars.
Rodriguez was recognized with the actress award at the Soberanos Awards in 2012 for her work in La Hija Natural and supporting actress at the Iris Awards in 2017 for her performance in Flor de Azúcar.
RMVISTAR president Rose Marie Vega said: “When I formed RMVISTAR a decade ago it was my goal to work with and help support our industry’s wonderfully talented women – those in front of and those behind the camera. So, I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to introduce new audiences globally to Leticia and Julietta’s incredible filmmaking and to share Jupía with them.”
