Vinayan V, CEO and Co-Founder of Prayan Animation Studio, spoke to ttvnews about his company’s commitment to creating high-quality, diverse content, that can not only entertain, but also inspire and resonate with viewers worldwide.

Through more than a decade of experience working in the animation industry, Prayan Animation has garnered a deep understanding of evolving industry trends and a proven track record of delivering high-quality animated content.

Over the years, the group has continuously recognized the dynamic nature of the animation industry and has committed itself to continuous innovation, caring to cultivate diverse creative talent to produce content that can transcend cultural boundaries and connect with audiences.

In the following interview with ttvnews, Vinayan V, CEO and Co-Founder of Prayan Animation Studio, talks about the many lessons the company has learned over the past decade, the current projects they are working on -including their own original animated properties-, and the importance of producing content that not only entertains but also inspires and resonates with viewers worldwide.

Having been in the animation business for well over a decade, how have you seen it evolve over the years and what’s your outlook on the current state of the animated content industry?

Looking back over the past decade, the animation world has experienced a major overhaul, largely due to digital production and the rise of streaming. We have transitioned from primarily hand-drawn animation to 3D, while also witnessing a comeback of unique hybrid styles. Currently, the industry is defined by rapid technological advancements, increased international cooperation, and a strong emphasis on inclusivity. We are optimistic about the future, predicting further expansion fueled by new technologies and evolving audience preferences, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.

What challenges and opportunities do new technologies and AI provide for companies such as Prayan and other content animators?

New technologies and AI present both significant opportunities and challenges. Opportunities include the potential for streamlined production workflows, enhanced visual fidelity, and the exploration of immersive storytelling through VR and AR.

However, the integration of AI also raises concerns regarding the ethical implications of its use, particularly in the context of intellectual property (IP). Instances where AI models have been trained on copyrighted artwork, such as the unauthorized replication of Studio Ghibli’s distinctive style, highlight the urgent need for industry-wide discussions and regulatory frameworks to protect artistic integrity and prevent the misappropriation of creative works. For Prayan, the strategic application of AI must be balanced with a commitment to ethical practices and the preservation of artistic originality. We believe that AI should serve as a tool to augment, rather than replace, human creativity.

What would you say are the main differences, other that topics and themes, between animating content for kids vs. adults? Which do you believe are the main trends in terms of animated content for both demographics?

Beyond thematic variations, the primary differences between animating content for children and adults lie in the complexity of narrative structure, visual style, and pacing. Children’s animation often employs simplified designs, clear storytelling, and vibrant colors, as exemplified by series like Bluey. Adult animation, conversely, frequently explores sophisticated themes, nuanced character development, and stylized aesthetics, as seen in Arcane or BoJack Horseman.

Current trends indicate a growing demand for immersive, narrative-driven content across demographics, with a notable rise in adult-oriented animation that pushes creative boundaries and addresses complex social issues. Children’s content continues to emphasize educational and engaging narratives, incorporating interactive elements and diverse representation.
