Following successful runs on TV3 and Movistar, the Spanish true crime series is making its international debut in Cannes.

Crimes, the series produced by Goroka and True Crime Factory for TV3, is starting its international run at the hands of Onza Distribution.

After two years of broadcasting on free-to-view TV through TV3, the series has been sold to premium pay TV platform Movistar, with fantastic results.

Directed by Carles Porta, Crimes is considered one of Spain’s most successful true crime series of all time. It received excellent audience ratings, with a 22.5% share on its first broadcast, and maintained leadership over the other channels throughout its years of prime-time broadcast.

Movistar launched the series early in the year and has gradually added all the episodes. The third season has been announced and will premiere on TV3 soon.

In April, Onza Distribution will present Crimes for the first time at Miptv.

According to Carlos Garde, the director of Onza Distribution: “We’re very happy to add Crimes to our portfolio. True crime series have a big following internationally, it’s one of the genres most sought after by buyers. The production quality on Crimes is impeccable and with the success it has enjoyed in Spain, we are in no doubt that it will have an excellent international run”.

The quality of this series is reminiscent of other true crime hits, such as Memories of a Murderer: The Nielsen Tapes and The Keepers, both on Netflix.

Crimes, with two seasons, each of 10 episodes, plus a 4-episode special, tells the story of over 40 real Crimes from the last 10 years. It tries to shine a light on the darkness through direct and indirect statements from those who lived through each of the stories. This series has no experts talking about their work like in other true crime series; rather, we hear from the people who participated in the events themselves, either because they were there or they investigated them.
