Dori Media arrived in Los Angeles for the new edition of LA Screenings with one of the most coveted catalog on the market right now, packed with some of the industry’s most successful formats, as well as remakes of its iconic series and new original productions, such as the highly-anticipated AMIA.
AMIA, the new 8-episode political action drama, is inspired by the 1992 terrorist attacks on the Israeli embassy and the 1994 terrorist attacks against the Argentine Jewish community, which has taken on new relevance in light of recent headlines in Argentina.
“It’s a completely new show we created, based on the real event”, Nadav Palti, CEO of Dori Media Group, started in coversation with ttvnews in Los Angeles. “It’s about the truth. The effects of what happened 30 years ago, and who wants to bury and cover the truth. It’s all around the world, not only Argentina and Uruguay, the secrets all around.”
“We started to work on this five years ago. We believed in the story, thought it was very important. It didn’t get enough response around the world so we decided to invest in it ourselves, without any pre-commission. During the years we got more investors and funds who got on board, so we financed a small part of it in the end. But we started with the idea”, the CEO explained.
In terms of premieres and sales, the executive hopes the series will get as big of an audience as possible, as to spread the message worldwide. “Hopefully, we want to sell it to the biggest platform with the widest audience in the world. We want a lot of people to be exposed to this story”.
Filmed in Uruguay and Argentina, AMIA follows a Mossad agent whose sister was killed in the 1992 embassy attack and teams up with a local Argentine journalist to find those responsible. The first season follows the period between the first and second attacks on the AMIA in 1994. “Timing-wise, it happens to coincide with what happened a few weeks ago in the Argentine government. And in two months comes the 30 year anniversary of what happened”.
“We planned three seasons originally. The second season we planned it from the AMIA booming to 2015, until the death of Nisman, the special investigator hired by the Argentinean government”, he revealed. “It’s a great story and we hope for the best”.
In addition to AMIA, the group is presenting another hit title which has recently been making headlines, this time unscripted: Power Couple, which scored several new sales and commissions at the last Miptv.
“Power Couple is a prime time reality show, doing very well all over the world, sold to 20 countries. In RTL in Germany it’s going in its ninth season, for example, and they will do a special season with celebrities. We are working on around five to seven more territories where we believe it will be on air within a year. So next year the show will be on air in over 20 years. When it comes to reality show, you have very few that work well around the world and Power Couple is one of them”.
“In non-scripted we also have Smart Face, for which we did thousands of episodes all over the world and now we want to remake it”, he added.
And speaking of remakes, the executive also highlighted the recent remake of Lalola for ViX. “The first 10 episodes went on air on February of this year and it was number one on ViX. Hopefully we’ll have more episodes and seasons in the future. Lalola is also great”, he said.
“And we produced another title in Israel called Indal, which will go on air soon and we will distribute it internationally. There’s also a new season of New Black and much more. On top of all this, we plan to start shooting two new dramas in Israel,” he concluded.
