Three major announcements from Atresmedia are being presented during Content Americas. Their first science fiction series, Sanctuary; Physics or Chemistry: New Generation; and Mariliendre are among the most exciting new offerings from the Spanish group for the U.S. Hispanic and Latin American markets.
This is what Miguel García, Head of International Sales at Atresmedia, shared with ttvnews: “We are arriving at Content Americas 2025 with a major innovation, which is our first science fiction series, Sanctuary, a genre we typically do not explore, but one that our audience has been demanding,” he said.
According to García, they took a podcast with the same name and found the formula to adapt it into a series.
“We finalized the adaptation with Pokeepsie Films, and the result has been wonderful. Sanctuary is the story of how, in a near future, robots and AI have changed the world, and women face difficulties in conceiving. The only solution is to keep them inside a sanctuary, which seems like an idyllic place, but from the first night, it is full of mysteries, and the sanctuary hides major secrets that make it more a place of science than of nature,” he explained.
The other two productions will premiere in February and March 2025. Physics or Chemistry: New Generation, produced by Buendía Estudios y Boomerang TV, the production company of Álex de la Iglesia, marks the return of one of Atresmedia’s most successful formats.
“This time, we’ve adapted it to modern times and introduced new actors that we’re confident young audiences will love. We’ll debut eight episodes, each 50 minutes long, returning to the stories at Colegio Sulbarán, where everything begins and falls apart. At the New Year’s Eve party, one of the students dies due to drug-related issues. From there, the story unfolds, focusing on their relationships, their transition from children to teenagers, and how they mature,” García explained.
The second highly anticipated series is Mariliendre, a six-episode, 45-minute production by Suma Content, the production company of Los Javis, and created by Javier Ferreiro. It’s a musical comedy with a touch of drama, featuring songs from 2010 that have been adapted for the series.
“It’s a special series centered on the life of a mariliendre, a term used to describe women who accompany gay men when they go out partying and in their daily lives. Our protagonist will go from being the most popular mariliendre in Madrid’s nightlife to the most hated, ultimately leaving behind the friendships she once had due to a problem that unfolds throughout the episodes. The story also delves into her personal life and her father’s death, which brings to light new secrets and mysteries. Her father held a secret that she would only discover after his passing,” García concluded.
