The content distributor expands its positioning, integrating the development of original stories, as well as the international negotiation of strategic alliances for financing and co-production of audiovisual projects, as is the case of the recently announced agreement with Inter Medya.
Five years after its creation, MGE presents within the framework of Content Americas a renewed image that begins a new stage of the company that marks not only its consolidation as one of the most solid independent content distributors in the industry, but also its positioning as a developer of original audiovisual projects with renowned Latin American production companies and scriptwriters, through its MGE Originals division, and as a strategic ally for co-production negotiations in the international market.
“MGE has been evolving naturally since its inception as a result of our firm commitment to working jointly and closely with our clients, involving us in all stages of development, negotiation and promotion, in order to achieve maximum internationalization of their stories. This vision has led us to become much more than a distribution company, which is why today we have decided to officially integrate the development of original projects, our expertise in international negotiations, and alliances for co-productions as part of our offer, giving way to a new stage of MGE that we wanted to see also reflected in our image,” commented Esperanza Garay, CEO of MGE.
This new positioning of MGE, as a distributor, incubator of original projects, and co-production ally, has already been felt in the industry through recently announced agreements that include: the series La Isla, a story that begins its co-production and distribution alliance with the renowned production company Río Estudios, inspired by the real myth of Friendship Island, and starring the Chilean actress Daniela Ramírez; the international distribution of the new Megamedia project Al Sur del corazón that will be seen throughout Latin America through Netflix; and its most recent co-production alliance with the Turkish giant Inter Medya for the telenovela Amor y Orgullo.
Regarding new features in its catalog, MGE arrives at Content Americas with a renewed offering that includes high-quality series and films, an inspiring documentary series, entertainment formats, original projects, and the most recent television hits from Megamedia and SBS Korea.
In terms of series, MGE presents Cromosoma 21 -for distribution on open and pay TV in Latin America-, La Cacería -seasons 1 and 2-, and Poemas Malditos. Cromosoma 21, produced by Film & Maker and Wild Sheep Entertainment, was the most watched Chilean series in 2023 and a success for more than 18 consecutive weeks on Netflix, which tells the story of Tomy, a low-income boy with down syndrome who is involved in a crime scene, unleashing a challenging investigation that confronts everyone with corruption and ethical and social prejudice. La cacería is a crime thriller inspired by real events in heartbreaking cases of disappearances of young people. The story, made by the production company Villano and directed by Juan Ignacio Sabatini, has two seasons, the first for distribution in the second window, and the second available in the first window for all platforms. Poemas Malditos, also from the Villano production company, is an electrifying series that focuses on four female protagonists with stories set in rural Chile at the beginning of the 20th century, inspired by the verses of the Lira Popular.
In the telenovela genre, MGE – distributor of the Megamedia catalog since its inception – will be presenting the two most recent television hits of the leading Chilean channel: Como la vida misma and Generación 98. Como la vida misma is a fun dramedy that reflects the challenges that modern society faces, when a divorced couple begins a relationship after meeting on a dating application, but now they must get their respective families to match. Generation 98 tells the story of a group of schoolmates who, after a reunion twenty-five years later, will face a secret from the past that involves them all and that no one wants to talk about. From SBS Korea, the title of the telenovela Destino y Amor is added: a charming coincidence, a dramedy that tells the story of love, challenges and disagreements between two sisters and two friends.
In the docuseries genre, MGE adds Extraordinarios, an inspiring and wonderful original documentary series produced by Altirosapiens, which immerses us in the world of women with disabilities from all over Latin America and shows us how their lives are living testimonies of struggle, resilience and triumph, bravely challenging a system that has historically discriminated against and relegated them.
And in the entertainment genre, the company is presenting successful formats from Latina, El Gran Chef and Tierra Brava.
Meanwhile, in the film portfolio, MGE offers a wide list of high-quality feature films, among which the award-winning Colombian film Somos Ecos directed by Julián Díaz Velosa stands out, which tells how the armed conflict goes through the lives of three young people; and Spider Girls, directed by Guillermo Helo and based on real events, which tells the story of three low-income teenagers who undertake a risky adventure climbing the buildings of an upper-class neighborhood to steal, seeking to change the destiny they had to live.
Finally, through its MGE Originals division, MGE has also incorporated innovative stories that are in the development phase into its portfolio, including – in addition to the already mentioned series La Isla with the renowned production company Río Estudios – the series Uzal, Los Órganos del Poder, En nombre del Hijo, El Silencio de los Angeles, La Mestissa, De nuevo en tus brazos, e Índigo.
“All that is MGE, we are a distributor, a curator, we enter into the developments, we work on all the integrated marketing and developed specifically for each product. That’s how MGE is happily reaching its first five years,” the executive summarized to ttvnews.
