The nominations for the 97th edition of the Academy Awards have been announced, where the Brazilian production is competing in the coveted category, the first time for Brazil. Emilia Pérez, meanwhile, leads the list with 14 nominations.
This Thursday, January 23, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the complete list of nominees for the 97th edition of the Academy Awards.
And Latin America has reason to celebrate: I’m Still Here, the first Globoplay Original film, is among the nominees for Best Picture, marking the first time that Brazil participates in this category.
The film is also competing in the categories of Best International Film and Best Leading Actress thanks to Fernanda Torres.
“What a great moment this Oscar nomination is in the exciting trajectory of I’m Still Here. It is a source of immense pride to see our first original film compete for the biggest movie award in the world, praising national cinema and talent. This recognition reaffirms Globoplay’s mission, as a Brazilian platform, to tell great stories with quality that reflect Brazil, our culture, society and history. This is especially significant in a year in which Globoplay celebrates its 10th anniversary and Globo celebrates its centenary of bringing excitement and excellent content to the public”, said Manuel Belmar, Globo’s Director of Digital Products, Finance, Legal and Infrastructure.
This is another recognition for the film, which won awards at the Golden Globes, the Venice Film Festival, the São Paulo International Film Festival, and was nominated for the Critics’ Choice and BAFTA Awards.
Meanwhile, Emilia Pérez continues to sweep this awards season and leads the nominations for these Oscars with a total of 13, a record for a non-English-speaking film, including Best Film, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Supporting Actress.
She is followed by The Brutalist and Wicked with 10 each, Conclave and A Complete Unknown with eight, Anora and Dune 2 with six, and The Substance with 5, all also competing in the Best Film category, which is completed by Nickel Boys.
In the individual categories, Adrien Brody, Timothee Chalamet, Colman Domingo, Ralph Fiennes and Sebastian Stan are competing for Best Actor; Cynthia Erivo, Karla Sofia Gascón, Mikey Madison, Demi Moore and Fernanda Torres are competing for Best Actress.
Jaques Audiard (Emilia Perez), Sean Baker (Anora), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), Coralie Fargeat (The Substance) and James Mangold (A Complete Unknown) are up for Best Director.
