The International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced this Thursday, the 19th, the nominees for the 2024 International Emmy Awards. Globo competes in the Best Actor categories, with Julio Andrade, for his performance in the Globoplay Original series Living On A Razors Edge; and in Documentary, with Transo, from Canal Futura. In total, there are 56 nominees from 21 countries across 14 categories. The winners of the 52nd edition of the International Emmy Awards will be announced on November 25 at the Gala ceremony in New York.

And on November 24, there will be a closing cocktail party for the International Television Festival celebrating 100 years of Globo, with hundreds of professionals from around the world attending in New York. Drawing inspiration from Brazil’s rich culture, Grupo Globo creates stories that resonate with millions of Brazilians who are entertained, informed, and see themselves reflected in its programming.

Living On A Razors Edge is a Globoplay Originals biographical series that tells the story of sociologist Herbert de Souza, Betinho, (1935-1997) and his fight for important social causes, particularly the battle against AIDS and hunger, portraying major events in Brazil’s recent history. The series reveals, in eight episodes, a lesser-known personal side of the activist through a family-centered storyline. Betinho is portrayed by Julio Andrade, who also serves as part of the directing team. The cast includes notable actors such as Humberto Carrão, Leandra Leal, Andréia Horta, and Ravel Andrade. The production is by AfroReggae Audiovisual, in partnership with Formata Produções and Globoplay. Created by José Junior, Living On A Razors Edge features scripts by Alex Medeiros, Sergio Machado, Armando Praça, George Walker, José Júnior, Manaíra Carneiro, and Rafaela Camelo, with final writing by Alex Medeiros. Lipe Binder and Julio Andrade directed the series, with Lipe Binder as the general director.

“Bringing Betinho to the Emmys with me is about shining a light on the Brazil I believe in. A Brazil that is supportive and collective. This is my third nomination and without a doubt the most important. I thank the entire team and partners who have been with me on this journey. Betinho is more alive than ever!” celebrated Júlio Andrade, who is competing against professionals from Turkey, France, and the United Kingdom.

Transo, a production from Canal Futura competing in the Documentary category, is based on a simple assertion: people with disabilities experience pleasure, talk about sex, and want to have sex. With around 45 million people with disabilities in Brazil, the documentary breaks taboos and explores the sexual lives of 12 participants. Over the course of approximately 75 minutes, the film gathers testimonies from Brazilians across different regions, portraying the diversity of sexuality among people with disabilities. The documentary is directed by Lucca Messer, with a script by Lucca Messer and Mariana Goulart. Competing in the Documentary category alongside Transo are productions from France (Laffaire Bettencourt: Scandale chez la femme la plus riche du monde), the United Kingdom (Otto Baxter: Not a F**ing Horror Story), and Singapore (The Exiles).

This year, Globo has received four nominations for the International Emmy Awards. In addition to the two productions announced on Thursday, RJ2 and GloboNews have been nominated in the “News” category at the International Emmy Awards for Journalism with a report on secret bonuses in the Rio City Council. GloboNews is also competing in the “Current Affairs” category with the documentary Evel, Hazin – Dias de Luto (Evel, Hazin – Days of Mourning). This award ceremony will take place next Wednesday, September 25.
