Madd Entertainment continued its tremendous 2022 with a successful showing at MipCancun, said the distributor. Madd arrived at Cancun with a catalogue led by five fast-selling premium series: Family Secrets, Hidden Truth, One More Chance, All About Marriage and Twisted Affairs.

Now in its second season, Family Secrets is a Top 10 series in Turkey and one of the fastest-selling dramas of 2022. Earlier this year it premiered at #1 in Spain under the title Secretos de familia on Antena3, while a local adaptation, Pagidevmenoi is earning remarkable ratings in Greece on ANT1 TV. The ratings success of both readymade and adapted formats in Europe continues an incredible run for one of Turkey’s most popular TV dramas, which has already sold to over 50 territories across Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East including USA, Romania, Spain, Chile, Argentina, Hungary and Albania.

The Ay Yapim drama features Kaan Urgancıoğlu (Endless Love, Love 101) and Pınar Deniz (Wounded Love, Love 101) as an unlikely duo who find themselves in the middle of a conspiracy that could bring down both their families. Family Secrets is an innovative series that combines all of the traditional romance of Turkish drama with a modern whodunit, delivering a powerful love story through thrilling plotlines each and every episode.

One of the highest-rated prime-time dramas today is Hidden Truth The MF Yapim series debuted on Turkey’s FOX network in 2021 to stellar ratings and remains a perennial top-10 series in 2022. It heads into its second season with dozens of international sales, including Spain, MENA, Albania, Greece, Israel, Honduras, Macedonia, Hungary, El Salvador and the USA. In addition, Disney+ EMEA has acquired Hidden Truth for its Originals collection. The series will soon make a premiere in these markets.

Hidden Truth features Onur Tuna (A Miracle) as Fırat Bulut, a star prosecutor in the Istanbul courts who wakes up to find himself in jail for the murder of his wife Zeynep and daughter Nazlı! On his own, with no memory and no friends left to help him, Fırat must try to solve his family’s murder from inside a prison cell. Giving the performance of a lifetime is İsmail Hacıoğlu (The Boy) as the ruthless criminal who frames Firat while faking his own death and engages in a cruel cat-and-mouse game with the former prosecutor.

Next up is the stylish new drama One More Chance from NTC Medya. The series is set at an elite high school, where three kids from the wrong side of the tracks investigate their friend’s suspicious suicide. They start by following a mystery but eventually discover an exciting new life among Istanbul’s super-wealthy – and a glimmer of hope for their future.

One More Chance airs Sunday nights on Turkey’s top-rated FOX network under the title Tozluyaka. A serious story about beautiful people, this series has an unusually wide viewer profile. Its fans range from 7 to 70, and its appeal to both families and youngsters has helped propel more than 25 sales so far, including MENA, Macedonia, Israel, Spain, Hungary and Disney+.

One more series attracting buyers this season is the MF Yapim drama All About Marriage, which aired on Turkey’s FOX network under the title Evlilik Hakkında Her Şey. The series is about a clan of high-powered divorce lawyers whose clients include billionaires, celebrities, and sometimes even themselves.

All About Marriage features a star-studded cast and was adapted from a critically-acclaimed BBC series and has garnered interest from around the world. Sales include Chile, El Salvador, Honduras, Angola, Mozambique, Ecuador, Georgia, Israel, Uzbekistan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Slovenia and MENA. These are in addition to numerous sales concluded this week at MipCancun

One more series getting a lot of attention this season is Twisted Affairs, Medyapim’s drama about a good woman pushed past the brink when she discovers her husband has been cheating on her with her best friend. It is the perfect follow up to the groundbreaking hit series A Woman Scorned, one of the best-selling Turkish titles of recent years.

Twisted Affairs is adapted from a hit Korean series and features an all-star ensemble, including Hatice Şendil (A Part of Me, Dila), İsmail Demirci (The North Star, Crash), Sera Kutlubey (Hercai) and Perihan Savaş (The Pit). It airs Fridays under the title İyilik on Turkey’s top-rated FOX network.

“This year’s MipCancun was a roaring success for Madd Entertainment and yet another sign that the very best Turkish dramas will always have a prominent place in the international market,” says the company on its press release.

By Fernando Moreno, from Cancun

The event, held at the Moon Palace Hotel, culminated on Wednesday 16th, leaving excellent sensations about its validity and the present of content production and distribution in the region. With more than 800 visitors, MipCancun experienced four days -from November 13 to 16- at an excellent rhythm, with a very good agenda of panels and conferences, as well as an ideal environment for networking of the highest level.

The opportunity of face-to-face meetings was highly valued by industry executives, who say there is no virtual alternative that compares to a face-to-face meeting.

Speaking with ttvnews, Pablo Cudell, Director of Content and Production at Telemundo Enterprises, highlighted the feeling of familiarity that the event aroused: “I just heard that it’s a kind of club of friends from the Hispanic audiovisual industry. I think it’s interesting to see what is happening in the industry with content and meeting with colleagues”.

“MipCancun is a warm space full of friends and having this [high] attendance makes it a very important market for us,” said Dulce Ávila, Director of Content Sales for TV Azteca Internacional.

That warmth, that feeling of familiarity, is not fortuitous, but rather something that the organization, led by María Pérez-Belliere, has sought to build: “People feel at home. That is what we really want to convey. It gives me great pleasure to see that people have formed like a family. Therein lies the success [of the event].”

An event as consolidated as necessary

The place that MipCancun has earned within the industry, as an element that provides enormous value to it, does not admit doubt: “MipCancun is an extremely important space for the region,” said Carolina Cordero, general manager of WAWA. The association international women in the audiovisual industry, was born, precisely, in a previous edition of the event.

“Seeing how this market has grown, from 40 tables to having more than 100. The support that the Midem group has given to this organization has been wonderful,” said Liliam Hernández, CEO of Univeresal Cinergia Dubbing, about this ninth edition of the event.

Cecilia Gómez de la Torre, from Tondero Distribución, agreed: “This year the market has grown considerably. Last year it was a very measured, small market. This year I think it exploded. It has been an extraordinary experience.”

“The market model is very interesting. It gives us freedom and a way to communicate many more times with customers. There are many opportunities and a lot of business is done,” said Francisco Villanueva, VP and COO of Somos Distribution.

Even for those who enjoyed their first MipCancun, the level of the event was a pleasant surprise: “This is my first MipCancun. Having the opportunity to meet my colleagues in the market, being able to have real face-to-face meetings where you can talk and talk about projects, it’s wonderful. It has no comparison. There are many companies, many people, much encouragement; many good projects and interesting things that are going to come out of here,” said Karen Barroeta, Executive VP of Production and Development at Telemundo Global Studios.

The event included the presentation of new content, a showcase of important companies, and a spectacular agenda of panels, with themes of inclusion, diversity, creativity and an emphasis on the use of local talent.

In moments of shock for Latin American international events, with a January that will have two novelties -Discop Miami and Content Americas- after the cancellation of Natpe Bahamas, the solidity that MipCancun presented in its 2022 edition was as well received as it was necessary.

Eccho Rigths, a distribution company recently acquired by Night Train Media, was another of the European companies present at the ninth edition of MipCancun, an event that takes place from November 13 to 16, at the Moon Palace Hotel.

“MipCancun is one of the most important markets for us, because it has a very important and powerful Latin American presence. We came last year and this time we are returning to its fullness. Everyone is there, things are moving, there is a much better atmosphere, and I think that, despite the different crises in the territories, there is a hunger for new content, and the classic stories from novels are once again found within the territories” Barbora Suster, head of Latin America and Iberia at Eccho Rights, told ttvnews.

The company, which this year celebrates its tenth anniversary, in addition to Turkish content, is also focusing its business on premium series from the United Kingdom.

“We have a very large leg of our catalog that is growing a lot, which is the UK drama, more premium series; more paid content than that of the novel”, commented Suster.

In parallel, the business of distributing Turkish novels or dramas continues to be the company’s core business, or as the executive herself defines, its “flag ship”.

“This season of the second half of 2022, we start it with one of the best titles that Turkey has seen lately, which is Golden Boy, which is achieving ratings on Star TV that have not been seen in the last four or five years, reaching 12 points, and obviously it is attracting attention, and we are already closing the first agreements,” he said.

Banijay Rights announced the return of adventure reality format Survivor to Colombia, as MipCancun draws to a close in Mexico this Wednesday 16.

Following a 15-year hiatus, Colombian broadcaster RCN will produce a new adaptation of Survivor to air in 2023 entitled Survivor, La Isla de los Famosos.

The agreement was brokered by Michelle Wasserman, SVP Latam, USH & Brazil, Banijay Rights, who said: “More than 15 years has passed since Survivor last graced television screens in Colombia, so we are thrilled to secure this deal and work with RCN to revive this world-famous format.”

Eugenia Vélez, VP of Programming and Marketing of RCN, said: “Canal RCN has proven to have the capacity and production team made up of experts in making amazing and challenging formats, which is why we are very proud to bring back to our screen a format like Survivor, la Isla de los Famosos, which fits very well with our purpose of continuing to create entertaining content for the whole family.”

This latest deal follows recent news of a return of Survivor to the UK, with Remarkable Entertainment (a Banijay UK company) set to produce for BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Survivor, a Banijay format created by Charlie Parsons, is one of the most watched reality entertainment formats around the world. Celebrating 25 years this year, (the format was first employed in 1997 in Sweden), the show has gone on to be ranked as the ‘Number 1 Best Reality Show of All Time’ by Variety. A total of 50 versions and more than 350 series have been commissioned around the world to date, and the CBS version of the show from the USA is currently airing its 43rd series.

The rules of Survivor are clear: contestants are divided in two tribes and fight in daily challenges for immunity and other advantages. After each immunity challenge, one team needs to see one of their own eliminated and on the way home. It is a tough competition and there is only one Survivor: the one that goes home with the title and the big award.

The organization, more than satisfied with the 2022 edition of MipCancun, which is taking place these days -from November 13 to 16- at the Moon Palace Hotel, shared the figures of the event, together with its joy for having staged a meeting place where industry executives have felt comfortable and worked at a great pace.

“We are very happy, really, because apart from the numbers that have been formidable, we are talking about more than 800 people and 46 countries represented, it is a very special moment for the entire industry,” said, with satisfaction, María Pérez-Belliere, director of MipCancun, who stressed that the event has served to “consolidate agreements”, but more than anything to create an environment that invites you to enjoy meetings and networking among colleagues.

“People feel at home,” Pérez-Belliere said. “That is what we really want to transmit, what is transmitted in the energy of our team and in the energy of the people who are here. It gives me great pleasure to go from a conference to the distribution room and see that people are talking like a big family, and you could see this even during the opening party. That’s the success [of the event].”

The third day of the event once again showed an intense coming and going in their networking spaces, with some announcements of new agreements, such as the one closed between CDC United Network and OnePlay. The day began with a breakfast sponsored by A+E that presented its fresh content in a showcase held at the Cancun Theatre, where it highlighted the main titles that cover a wide range of genres.

At the same time, the conferences maintained their very high level, with panels such as the one presented by Telemundo Streaming Studios, titled “Fearless storytelling: is it worth it?”, with the participation of Juan Ponce, Pablo Culell and Lara Talamas, from Telemundo Streaming Studios.

The panel focused on the history of Telemundo, its growth and the sound analysis that led to the creation of Telemundo Streaming Studios: “As a company we knew that the evolution of the industry was headed towards streaming platforms as the first window for content and a destination in itself,” Ponce said. “NBC decided to continue its leadership in production and put together a team dedicated to providing production services for those clients who needed, beyond the change in format, a new type of stories.”

Telenovelas were the focus of discussion in the keynote “Igniting Today’s Audiences Through Latin Melodrama”, which had Karen Barroeta, Executive VP of Production and Development at Telemundo Global Studios, as the speaker. “Audiences are still interested and attracted by this type of format, they enjoy it,” said the executive. “Being able to have a long format, from three to five months, before we were talking about eight to ten months, strategically speaking it’s an advantage. When you have a soap opera that works for you and has a great rating, sitting there for five months without worry is wonderful.”

There was also space for diversity and inclusion with different panels, including one focused on the leading women in the Hispanic audiovisual industry, with the participation of Mariana Pérez, from The Walt Disney Company, Coty Cagliolo, from Fremantle Latam, Karina Dolgiej, from BBC Studios and Ana Celia Urquidi, CEO of Atenea Media. The panel was held within the framework of the Mipcom Cannes Diversify TV Awards and the MipCancun Award.

The event will close this Wednesday the 16th with its fourth and last day, in which a traditional decrease in movement is expected, but one that will not erase the good sensations of the previous days. “What I want to make clear is that MipCancun is more consolidated than ever,” said Pérez-Belliere. “And we already invite you all to come to the 10th edition in 2023. We will confirm the dates later, but you will always be welcome.”

The content is still king, but the IPs -their rights- are the queens, and for this reason Telemundo Streaming Studios, the Miami-based production company, is working on modifying its output towards more co-production or licensing projects, with greater investment, but also with greater control and potential profit over what is produced.

“Today almost 100% of the productions made are for our clients,” Juan Ponce, SVP and general manager of Telemundo Streaming Studios, told ttvnews, in a dialogue held during the third day of MipCancun 2022. “We believe that this balance will change in the next two years: we are going to do more co-productions and licensing, where we are going to invest. Next year this will be 80/20 and, eventually, we will go to a model closer to 50/50”.

The studio, launched as the first focused on serving Latino audiences that consume streaming, works under three pillars: scripted content, non-scripted content, and feature films. As “fiction enthusiasts”, as Ponce defines the team behind the production company, the miniseries have become top-of-the-line content for their clients. “We are making a slate of miniseries, in Mexico, Colombia and Argentina,” the executive commented. “And we are now with new teleseries, which Pablo Culell is leading, in a hybrid format between the traditional novel and the miniseries, which excites us a lot.”

At the same time, Telemundo Streaming Studios understands the reality of the global economy after the pandemic and, one of its strengths, is adapting to the possibilities of its partners. “One of the benefits of working with us is that we can adjust our formats to the infrastructure; we can do them in the millions or in the hundreds of thousands, depending on the format,” Ponce said.

In the US, the growth of the English-speaking Hispanic audience -second or third generations of Latinos born in the US- is part of the studio’s action plan: “We have a quite armed approach and vertical, and now we are producing shows, working a lot with our Universal Studios family for the general market,” Ponce explained. “We are looking for stories to be able to produce them at that level. That is, we are not going to make stories with Latin American budgets, but rather we are looking for those general-level budgets, with universal stories, that have Latino characters. It is an initiative that personally I’m very excited.”

Something similar is happening in Spain, a market that, Ponce explains, Telemundo Streaming Studios approaches with great respect due to the maturity of the local industry. “Spain is a very important region, with a lot of backing, and in this model we are making many co-productions; we are contributing from funding to creative support,” he said. “What is also different is that we do not go with stories from here translated into Spain. We do not believe in that. We believe in hyperlocal organic stories, we share with creatives from there to generate local stories, from Spain to Spain.”

Universal Cinergia Dubbing, the content localization company that this year celebrates its 10th anniversary in the industry, is another of the companies with a presence at the ninth edition of MipCancun, an event that is taking place from November 13 to 16, in the Moon Palace Hotel.

Recently honored by the Turkish Chamber of Commerce during Mipcom 2022, the company has had a year of great challenges and achievements, including the opening of studios in Brazil.

“I am very happy to be here in MipCancun; we have not missed a single one. We have seen how this market has grown from 40 tables to more than 100. The support that the Midem group has given to this organization has been wonderful,” Liliam Hernández, CEO of Universal Cinergia Dubbing, told ttvnews about this ninth edition of the event.

For the company, 2022 has been “fantastic”, in the first instance for celebrating its tenth anniversary in the industry, in addition to the opening of studios in Brazil, in the city of Rio de Janeiro. “It has been a fantastic facility, the largest we have. We are very proud”, highlighted the executive.

“We are very happy that next year, together with the Turkish Chamber of Commerce, we will hold an event to celebrate the success of Turkish content, both in Latin America and throughout the world. Soon they will have news,” Hernández said.

Red Arrow Studios International is participating in the current edition of MipCancun, where is presenting two new entertainment formats, with exclusive rights for Latin America.

“We are very happy to attend this edition of MipCancun and [we are here] with a very solid line up. Proof of this are the two formats that are at the top of our catalogue: Claim to Fame and Block Out”, Fabiola Flores, Director of Sales for Latin America at Spiral International, a company that represents Red Arrow Studios International in the region, told ttvnews.

“Those two formats are very innovative and we think they will make a difference for those channels that produce them,” she adds.

Within the new content offer of Red Arrow Studios International for Latin America, there is the competition format Claim to Fame, produced by Kinetic Content for the US network ABC, and within the first two episodes, it became the most viewed.

In Claim to Fame twelve contestants, each of whom has a famous relative, move into a house together and are tasked with deducing which celebrities the other contestants are related to while also keeping their own relationship with each other a secret. the celebrities.

In each episode, the contestants participate in a competition. The winner receives immunity for the round and a bonus clue about another contestant.

At the end of the episode, the contestants secretly vote between the two lowest-ranked performers in the competition to be the “guesser” for the round. The guesser will then pick any other non-immune contestant and announce which celebrity they think the other contestant is related to. If the guesser is correct, the other contestant will be eliminated; if the guesser is wrong, the guesser will be eliminated instead.

“It is a format that has a mixture of guessing and reality. For this season, the grandson of Chuck Norris, the granddaughter of Whoopi Goldberg and the niece of Cindy Crawford participated”, she comments.

“We are very happy that the format was acquired by Warner Bros for ten countries in Europe, and for Latin America we are very excited because we know it is a format that will attract attention,” she underlines.

For its part, Block Out, is a format created by Nippon TV, which mixes skill, dexterity and entertainment, where two teams of four members each, who must dodge a wall that will try to throw them into the void every time their answers are not the correct ones

“This format has already been produced in Spain, the Netherlands and some countries in Asia. Likewise, it has already been licensed by Italy, France and Portugal. We have already presented it in some Latin American countries and it has been very well received. It’s a familiar format for prime time,” she concluded.
