In her brand new position at Kanal D International, Duda Perman, recently appointed Sales Manager for Latam for the Turkish group, was present at Content Americas together with Elif Tatoğlu, Director of Distribution Strategy, to showcase their catalog for the international market.
And leading the list of titles is the hit drama Family Burden, one that is already having a lot of success in Turkey and which Perman predicts will continue to conquer audiences in Latam.
“Family Burden is the title we are focusing on this time,” Perman told ttvnews in Miami. “We know that this title will be hot in Latam. We are already in talks with several territories and hopefully here at Content Americas we can announce some sales,” she said.
“It is a title that has had an incredible performance in Istanbul, Turkey, and I am sure that it will work very well in the Latam countries,” she added.
Family Burden is joined in the catalogue by another great success from Kanal D, Secret of Pearls, which also seeks to reach new territories with its story. “With Secret of Pearls, I think that the strongest part is its story and the format,” explained Elif Tatoğlu.
In this sense, the executive explained that the format can adapt very well in any territory, be it Brazil or Mexico, because it is a universal story. “In the drama we see a father who sacrifices his life for his children. He is trying to rebuild his life after leaving prison. So we have two story arcs, one of a father and his children, and another of a man who has left prison and is trying to rebuild his life, and he meets two opposite women and must discover his true feelings for them,” the executive detailed.
“It really focuses on the characters and their feelings, not on the events. Right now we are focusing on introducing the format to other regions,” she added.
“And that is what we are trying to do with most of our dramas. Focus on the content itself, on the feelings of the characters, on why they act the way they do. That makes them interesting for everyone. The viewer can always identify with one of the characters and follow the story through them,” she explained.
Adapting formats thus stands as a major trend for Kanal D International in 2025, seeking to repeat the formula of an agreement they managed to sign in 2024 with one of the leading channels in Portugal. “This channel acquired an older format and adapted it with its own language and characters,” said Perman. “They have exclusivity in their territory, and in neighboring countries in Europe and Latam, and Kanal D will sell that product to other parts of the world.”
“I see an opportunity there and I will be working to repeat this model in other countries such as Brazil, Chile or Peru, which usually produce their own content. And I think that with the history of how Turkish content has worked in Latam, that will be a great business trend,” she concluded.
