The adaptation of the book by acclaimed Franco-Moroccan author Leila Slimani will be produced by Conspiração in co-production with Globoplay and Disney’s Star Original Productions label.

The renowned Franco-Moroccan author Leila Slimani will have her book Dans le Jardin de l’Ogre adapted for the big screen by Brazilian director Carolina Jabor, starring Alice Braga. The announcement was made on Friday, May 16, during the Cannes Festival, where Slimani is serving on the jury this year.

Critically acclaimed, In the Garden of the Ogre was Slimani’s debut novel. The author, also known for Lullaby, won one of France’s most prestigious literary awards, the Prix Goncourt, in 2016, and her work has been translated into nearly 30 languages.

“I’m thrilled that Dans le Jardin de l’Ogre is being adapted for cinema. I wrote this book with many cinematic images in mind — almost like a film. I often thought of works like Belle de Jour, both Joseph Kessel’s novel and Buñuel’s film, and Damage, by Louis Malle. These references deeply inspired the book’s atmosphere — the unspoken tensions, the glances, the silent games. Seeing this story come to life on screen is like returning to its roots. It’s moving and very emotional,” says Slimani.

Produced by Conspiração, the feature film is an original work by Globoplay and Star Original Productions, Disney’s label dedicated to Brazilian cinema. It tells the story of Júlia, a woman who appears to have a perfect life: she is a successful journalist and lives comfortably in São Paulo with her surgeon husband and young son. However, she hides a secret: her addiction to risky sex. When her husband suggests moving to a small town, Júlia sees this as a chance to abandon her destructive behavior and become the mother and wife she has always wanted to be. But as the move approaches, her addiction intensifies, threatening to expose her secrets and destroy her family.

“She is a woman trying to live two parallel lives where conflicting emotions coexist. As her addiction consumes her, she loses control over her own existence,” highlights director Carolina Jabor.

After starring in major international projects such as the AppleTV+ series Dark Matter and Queen of the South, Alice Braga will play the lead role of Júlia. The screenplay is written by Rita Piffer, in collaboration with Carolina Jabor and Victoria Visco. Filming will take place this year in São Paulo, Brazil. The film is part of the ongoing partnership between Globoplay and Disney to co-produce Brazilian films.
