On Monday, during the first day of Mipcom, Brazilian giant Globo held a cocktail party to announce its main deals and news for the international market.
One of the most relevant deals highlighted was the co-production alliance signed with Beta Film for the development of the police drama Discipline (working title). Globo will have exclusive rights in Brazil and Beta Film will handle international sales.
“The co-production deal with Beta Film is very important for Globo”, Angela Colla, Head of International Business and Co-Productions at Globo, said to ttvnews during Mipcom in Cannes.
“We want to be more present in Europe. We will be producing a very Brazilian series, but with a better ability to travel. Beta is very good at doing that. They will give it the international touch, for it to be a high-quality series as Globo does, with a touch of international for European markets.”
Other major announcements came from format sales, a side of Globo’s business that they really started exploring two Mipcoms ago.
“Two years ago at Mipcom, we decided to start talking to the market about formats. Globo has so many IPs, so many excellent stories that were developed and produced thinking about the Brazilian audiences, and we made that story travel. But there are limitations on it. You can’t use the finished shows all over the world,” the executive explained.
“So we started discussing with the market to see if there was an opportunity. And it’s really amazing to see that there is an opportunity for our formats. Because all around the world, producers and channels need ideas, they need stories with good track records, with proven success,” she added.
After starting conversations two Mipcoms ago, one year later, also at Mipcom, the Brazilian giant announced a partnership for Avenida Brazil, the most successful telenovela from Globo. The result of an unprecedented agreement between Globo and Ay Yapim, Turkey’s leading telenovela producer, Leyla premiered on the Turkish channel NOW, with general direction by Hilal Saral (from Fatmagul).
“We’re so happy to show that the telenovela from Ay Yapim, distributed by Madd, is being sold into the market very successfully”, she highlighted.
And to continue the trend, at the current Mipcom, Globo announced strategic partnerships for international adaptations of the series Justice: Life is not fair and The Others for Greece, and also of The Others for German-speaking territories.
In Greece, Justice: Life is not fair will be produced by Primavisione and broadcast by Alpha TV, who will also produce and exhibit The Others. For German-speaking territories, one of the largest independent German production companies, ndF (neue deutsche Filmgesellschaft), takes over production.
“We announced three more format deals that we hope to see becoming new shows in different parts of the world with our original IPs. So it’s really nice to see how things are moving and how we are actually building that format market for Globo,” she said. “We hope to see those new shows adapted to local versions very soon.”
Lastly, the company announced a partnership with BR&360, led by Ignacio Orive, to distribute its live action shows for kids worldwide. With this exclusive agreement, Brands & Rights 360 will help Globo expand its kids content presence all around the world.
“We produce great quality kids shows and we are not making them travel like we do with telenovelas, because we don’t have the resource, someone devoted to making that content get to the right audiences. It’s beautiful content, educational and entertaining. And we are confident kids all over the world will too. So Ignacio and BR&360 will do that for us and we look forward to seeing the results very soon,” she concluded.
