This morning, the 97th Oscar nominations were announced and it was a big day for Brazil, with Globoplay’s original film, I’m Still Here, getting nominated for Best Movie, the first time for a Brazilian production in this category.

“It’s a very big day. It’s a big day for Globoplay and Globo, but more so for Brazil”, Angela Colla, director of International Business and Co-Productions at Globo, said to ttvnews. “We were all together this morning, celebrating. We were very optimistic about it, we knew there was a chance to be nominated, but we were surprised about the Best Film nomination. We are extremely happy. We heard people in Brazil were shouting out the windows, so it’s a big day for the Brazilian production industry”.

This is one more reason for Globo to celebrate in a year that markes its 100th anniversary, as well as the 10th anniversaty of Globoplay and 60th for TV Globo.

“We are celebrating 100 years so we are a solid, robust company”, she explained. “And we are here setting the paths for the next 100 years. This company has the capacity to transform itself in a way we are very proud. Globoplay is producing Oscar-worthy movies, so this is how we are shaping our future”.

“The important message we really want to show the market here is we need partnerships, we can’t do it by ourselves. We need our clients to make our content travel around the world, to get it to broader audiences around the world,” she said. “We also need them to produce more content that’s relevant for the world, co-productions. We need partners to give new ways of telling our stories to the world”.

And now, the group is also focusing strongly on unscripted titles. “The unscripted shows have been gaining success around the world. It’s easier to produce, cheaper, so you get the best result out of it. And the audience is really keen on watching that type of show. Linear TV needs to find ways to maintain its relevance, and competition, unscripted shows have the power to do that. We noticed there was a demand for that type of show. And we’ve been doing that a lot in Brazil too. What we do at the international division is amazing because we have so many opportunities, such as broad portfolio, because we have many windows in Brazil, so we know the needs for each of them”, she concluded.
