Amazon Studios announced a first-look deal with the award-winning Mexican actors and producers, who will create and produce content for the platform, starting with the Amazon Original series about Cortés and Moctezuma.
This Tuesday, Amazon Studios announced a new first-look deal with award-winning Mexican actors and producers, Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna.
They are currently both executive producers of the upcoming Amazon Original series about Cortés and Moctezuma, produced by Amazon Studios and Amblin Television.
As part of the deal, Bernal and Luna will create and produce content for Amazon Studios, which will premiere on Amazon Prime Video in more than 200 countries.
Luna and Bernal recently announced their new production house in Mexico, La Corriente del Golfo, an independent company for film, theater, television and a variety of community-oriented projects.
“We are excited and grateful to La corriente del Golfo for this agreement with Amazon Studios,” Bernal said. “This provides an opportunity for us and for talent in Latin America to create ambitious and interesting projects.”
Luna, on the other hand, commented: «This is an important moment for everyone in La corriente del Golfo. We are very excited to work hand in hand with Amazon, as this will allow us to reach new audiences and tell stories that represent us and reflect our realities ».
Vernon Sanders, TV chief at Amazon Studios, added: “We are delighted to expand Amazon Studios’ relationship with the multi-talented team of Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna. Their endless creativity and global perspective will undoubtedly result in more captivating content for our Amazon Prime Video customers”.
The project about Cortés and Moctezuma will be an epic four-hour drama, which will follow the inexorable march and eventual confrontation between the conqueror Hernán Cortés and the Aztec emperor, Moctezuma II, which led to the annihilation of an empire and the tragic fall of a civilization that took centuries to build, but less than two years to be destroyed.
Oscar winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) will star in and also be executive producer of this limited series, created for television and written by Oscar winner Steven Zaillian (Schindler’s List) and based on a screenplay by Dalton Trumbo (Roman Holiday)
Bardem, Bernal and Luna will be executive producers along with Zaillian, Kirk Douglas (Spartacus), Grant Hill (The Tree of Life), and the co-chairs of Amblin Television, Darryl Frank (The Americans) and Justin Falvey (The Americans).
