Realities and talent shows have been incorporated into Rakuten TV’s offer, which maintains its close ties with the world of sports and its emphasis on unscripted content.
Non-scripted content, and sports in particular, is a trademark of Rakuten TV, but the platform is expanding to offer other genres, although always within non-scripted productions.
“Historically we have been closely linked to sports, documentary, serial and non-fiction content,” says Cristian Liarte, Europe Head of Originals at Rakuten TV, in dialogue with ttv during Miptv 2023. “Now we are more open with other types of formats and genres, but always not hyphenated”.
“We are evaluating some initiatives, but if the producer wants to increase the chances of a sale, it is better to go towards non-scripted content,” adds the executive.
Contents such as Andrés Iniesta: The Unexpected Hero are signposts for the productions that interest Rakuten TV, but the company also accompanies market trends: “Now there is a great trend in reality shows and talent shows. We launched our first reality show in November and we are assessing its second season”, says Liarte.
“Sports is an element that will continue to link Rakuten and women’s sports in particular is an area that has worked very well and for which we are going to continue betting on it,” adds the executive.
