The comedian show will be the first one to be streamed live by the platform
Netflix will broadcast a Chris Rock comedy special live, globally, in early 2023, in what will become the first experience of the streaming giant with live content.
“Chris Rock is one of the most iconic and important comedic voices of our generation,” Robbie Praw, Netflix’s vp stand-up and comedy formats, said in a statement. “We’re thrilled the entire world will be able to experience a live Chris Rock comedy event and be a part of Netflix history. This will be an unforgettable moment and we’re so honored that Chris is carrying this torch.”
Netflix has been investing big in comedy for many years now, but live streaming is something new that can open up other possibilities down the road, perhaps with live concerts and event sports.
The Wall Street Journal reported earlier that Netflix has explored acquiring the streaming rights to tennis and cycling programming in some specific countries, but the high bidding cost of sports rights have make Netflix tentative about adding this new genre to its catalogue.
This will be Rock’s second Netflix stand-up special, coming after Chris Rock: Tamborine, in February 2018.
