The Canadian company’s contents enjoy great international prestige, as it sets the goal of producing twenty new original productions. International sales are growing steadily, and the next goal will be to define which screens these projects will air on. Leyla Formoso, head of International Sales for Latin America, offers us details about the company’s next steps in the international market.
What goals are set for the remainder of 2021 and 2022 at the original production level? What is your main target?
Our ongoing goal at Corus Studios remains to develop and produce premium original content across Lifestyle and Factual that resonates with audiences around the world. For the remainder of the year and looking forward to 2022, we have over 20 original series in production that will launch next year. With new series across food, home renovation and riveting docu-series, we are excited to bring a diverse cast of characters, big star talent and refreshing storylines to viewers.
What results have you obtained for what was 2020 and part of 2021 in such a particular context?
In the last year at Corus Studios, we doubled our sales internationally, growing our distribution footprint to multiple territories around the world. Corus Studios secured its largest US distribution deal to date this past year, with over 200 hours of content sold to Hulu. Our home and renovation series, Island of Bryan, is an on-going top performer on HGTV in the U.S., having multi-year success there, the series continues to sell globally, having sold to over 100 countries and territories, with recent sales in Latin America, Germany and Turkey. The series still has so much room to grow with new buyers in Latin America and Asia.
We continue to increase our library of content, adding over 20 original new and returning series set to debut in 2022. We are thrilled with the international response we have received from buyers for our content and look forward to sharing more of what we have with the world.
What projects are you preparing?
We are very excited to bring superstar Pamela Anderson back to television with a new home and renovation series, Pamela Anderson Home Reno Project. This show will feature the star as she transforms her grandparents estate that she purchased years ago into the home of her dreams. Pamela’s star appeal around the world is sure to drive viewers globally to see her latest adventure.
On the unscripted side, popular car restoration series Rust Valley Restorers, remains a fan-favourite after its success on Netflix and will return for a fourth season. Additionally, new series, Deadman’s Curse, is set to unveil mystery and true treasures in this new unscripted series set to debut next year.
Corus Studios is also the destination for exciting food competition series: Great Chocolate Showdown and Junior Chef Showdown are just a few titles that have made waves in the U.S. this year with sales to Hulu and the C.W. and truly embody the joy of cooking. Plus travelogue series Big Food Bucket List and bakery makeover series, Project Bakeover fill out our food slate along with our series Wall of Chefs spinning off a new version Wall of Bakers.
How important is the Latin American market?
The Latin American market is very important for Corus Studios and it is a market we are keen to bringing more of our content to in the next year. We have seen great interest in our home and renovation series like Scott’s Vacation House Rules and Island of Bryan already with sales in Latin America – we know have a lot to offer and look forward to showcasing our dynamic content to this market.
What bets are they making in this regard?
What we know is that our content is resonating across the world and we have more room to grow. In the Latin American market, with me now being on the ground as a sales representative for Corus Studios, we now have a bigger opportunity to super serve our partners and continue to show the quality and range of our extensive catalogue content to this market.
