Disney agreed to pay Starzplay 50 million reais (US$ 9.5 million) to dismiss the legal actions against it.

Brazilian website UOL revealed in the last hours that Disney and Lionsgate (Starzplay’s mother company) reached an agreement in Brazil to dismiss the legal actions for the use of the Star and Star+ brands.

The controversy had started in June of this year when Lionsgate initiated legal actions against The Walt Disney Company in Argentina, Brazil and Mexico, arguing that the name of Star+ – the new OTT platform that will be launched in the region on August 31- is very similar to Starzplay.

To sign the peace, Disney promised to pay 50 million reais (US$ 9.5 million dollars) for “possible damages” caused in the Brazilian market by the use of that brand.

In return, Lionsgate will withdraw its lawsuit and the injunctions against the use of the Star brand that they requested.

It is not clear if the agreement includes the rest of the Latin American territories.

Disney has already launched Star as a brand within Disney+ -like Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm- in 17 countries around the world, including Spain.

In Latin America it will be launched independently as Star+ at a price of US$ 7.5 per month, or together with Disney+ for US$ 9 per month on August 31.
