Streaming service Starzplay announced this Thursday the start of filming Señorita 89, its first original Mexican series.
It had been initially announced in August of last year with the provisional title of Señorita Mexico.
As announced at the time, the series is produced in partnership with Pantaya, Fremantle, and Fable.
Shot in Mexico City, the series is directed by showrunner Lucía Puenzo. It will be seen in the US and Puerto Rico through Pantaya and in Spain, Latin America and Brazil through Starzplay.
Señorita 89 is a “sophisticated dramatic thriller” set in the dark glamor of Mexico in the 1980s, which follows the contestants’ training for the Miss Mexico pageant as they strive not only to win, but to come out alive. the competition.

Also joining the cast are Coty Camacho (Desenfrenadas), Mónica del Carmen (Asfixia, Babel), Mabel Cadena (Monarch, The dance of the 41), Aida López (Monarch, The candidate), Leidi Gutiérrez (Chicuarotes, The chosen ones), Ari Brickman (El Chema, The Lord of the Skies), Marcelo Alonso (Neruda) and Getsemani Vela (Twenty-year-old: divorced and fantastic).
Señorita 89 is executive produced by Juan de Dios Larraín, Pablo Larraín, Ángela Poblete and Mariane Hartard from Fabula and Christian Vesper from Fremantle.
The eight-episode series is written by Lucía Puenzo, who is also a director, María Renée Prudencio and Tatiana Mereñuk and is directed by Nicolás Puenzo, Sílvia Quer and Jimena Montemayor. Fremantle will handle the international distribution of the series.
