UK distributor Sphere Abacus has announced a series of international sales for its premium history programming, highlighted by the acquisition of The Maya: War of the Five Kingdoms by Movistar Plus+ for Spain and Portugal.

The four-part documentary series, produced by Pernel Media, was licensed to Luk Internacional for Movistar Plus+ in both territories. The title has also been acquired by Viasat World for Central and Eastern Europe, Cyprus, Greece, Malta, Scandinavia and Poland, and by Foxtel Group for Australia and New Zealand.

The announcement was made during Sunny Side of the Doc, where Sphere Abacus is represented by Global Content Director Will Stapley and Sales Director Laura Masson.

In addition to the Movistar Plus+ deal, the distributor secured a number of international agreements for its history slate. Among them, 1776: American Independence, produced by Dash Pictures for National Geographic, was acquired by Viasat World, Now TV Hong Kong, BBC Select Americas, Foxtel Group Australia and VRT.

Meanwhile, Gladiators: Warriors Of The Ancient World, also produced by Dash Pictures for National Geographic, was sold to Foxtel Group Australia, Czech Television, ZDF Germany and JCG Korea Inc.

The first and second seasons of Queens That Changed The World, produced by Woodcut Media, were licensed to multiple international buyers, including SBS Australia, BBC Select Americas, Sky Germany, RAI Italy, ARTE, NRK Norway, SVT Sweden, DR Denmark and Foxtel Group Australia, among others.

Additionally, the feature documentary The Hunt for the Last Nazis, produced by Mint Pictures for SBS, was acquired by AMC Global Media for the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia, as well as by RTL Netherlands.

“History programming has always intrigued and fascinated viewers around the world. We’re seeing a significant shift in the number of platforms and broadcasters looking for new ways to deliver high-end historical storytelling that satisfies audiences’ ongoing appetite for these stories,” said Hana Palmer, Executive Director Global Distribution & Partnerships at Sphere Abacus.

“We are looking for more ancient and contemporary history projects from producers and are hoping to have promising discussions around this type of programming, among other genres, while at Sunny Side of the Doc,” added Will Stapley.
