Underground City, an original format created by Endemol Shine Brasil and directed by Eduardo Rajabally, will explore the hidden world of the São Paulo subway system, along with the personal stories of its passengers.

Endemol Shine Brasil, part of Banijay Americas, today unveils Underground City (Cidade Subterrânea), a new docu-reality series offering a unique and immersive look into São Paulo’s subway system. Produced by Endemol Shine Brasil, the series premieres on GNT and Globoplay, and will also air on TV Globo’s Fantástico.

Underground City captures the fast-paced operations that keep the unseen world of São Paulo’s subway system running, alongside the personal stories of its passengers. With exclusive access to restricted areas including the operations control centre, maintenance facilities, and security units, the series uses surveillance and body camera footage to capture real-life incidents, with each episode weaving together multiple narratives, balancing high-pressure moments with the everyday journeys, emotions, and aspirations that unfold between stations.

Nani Freitas, CEO, Endemol Shine Brasil, says: “For the first time, we reveal São Paulo’s subway system in all its dimensions, from the experiences of everyday commuters to the complex operations powering Latin America’s largest city. Using a dedicated production model with crews working in shifts, we captured events authentically and in real-time, creating a premium, access-driven format with international appeal.”

Patrícia Koslinski, Head of Variety Content for Digital Products, Globo adds: “This series reveals a world that often goes unnoticed beneath the surface of major cities, transforming everyday transit into a stage for powerful human stories. By opening access to restricted areas, it captures the intensity, emotion, and unpredictability of this rail network, blending real-life stakes with rich, character-driven storytelling.”
