The project, directed by Patricia Riggen and Gabriel Ripstein and produced by Mónica Lozano for Alebrije Producciones, will explore the intense relationship between the iconic Mexican artists.
Netflix is developing a new series that will explore the passionate and complex relationship between Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, two of the most influential figures in Mexican and global art.
The production will examine how the couple’s love, betrayals, and artistic work were deeply shaped by the political, social, and cultural context of their time. From the intimate perspective of the pair—often referred to as The Dove and the Elephant—the series will portray Kahlo and Rivera’s relationship as one marked by passion, contradictions, and public scrutiny.
The story will place special focus on Kahlo, portraying her as a woman who refuses to remain merely a muse and instead chooses to tell her own version of pain through her art. At the same time, it will follow Rivera as he attempts to sustain his creative genius while confronting his personal and professional conflicts.
Described as a story of love, art, and conflict set against a time of intense cultural and political transformation, the series will present the relationship between the two artists as something that transcended the private sphere to become a public spectacle and a reflection of Mexico in that era.
The project will be directed by Patricia Riggen and Gabriel Ripstein and produced by Mónica Lozano for Alebrije Producciones. The adaptation is based on the work of writer Claire Berest and will be led by María Renée Prudencio as head writer.
