Produced by Beta Film and Millstreet Films, The Other Royals – A Maxima Story further explores the compelling characters and stories introduced in season two. In addition, a third season of Maxima is currently in development.
Ever since the initial announcement of Maxima, the series about the Dutch royal family has been making waves throughout the world. Now, the story of Maxima continues to grow: Ahead of the second season premiere next month, Beta Film and Millstreet Films are expanding the franchise with a spin-off, The Other Royals – A Maxima Story, a new series that further explores the compelling characters and stories introduced in season two. In addition, a third season of Maxima is currently in development.
Maxima (12h), sold by Beta in 85 territories worldwide, broke records on RTL Netherlands’ streaming service Videoland, achieved superb ratings on Rai in Italy, TV2 in Denmark and Atresmedia in Spain, and ranked in the Top 10 on HBO’s streaming service Max in Latin America for multiple weeks.
The Other Royals – A Maxima Story starts in 1999, when Mabel Wisse Smit and Margarita de Bourbon de Parme both meet their future royal partners. As their personal lives increasingly come under public scrutiny, they begin to discover what it truly means to live close to the crown.
The five-hour series is produced by Millstreet Films in co-production with FBO and Beta Film. It stars Claire Bender (High Flyers) as Princess Mabel and Bram Suijker (Nemesis) as Prince Friso. Delfina Chaves (The Secret of the Greco Family, Happy 6) and Martijn Lakemeier (The East, Marie Antoinette) reprise their roles as Maxima and Willem-Alexander respectively. Saskia Diesing, director of Maxima, will also direct The Other Royals – A Maxima Story together with Hiba Vink.
Rachel van Bommel, Producer, Millstreet Films: “The stories surrounding the royal couple are too powerful and compelling to remain in the background. The chemistry within the cast of season two only strengthened that conviction. With The Other Royals – A Maxima Story, we expand the universe with the same ambition, scale, and emotional depth that resonates so strongly with audiences worldwide. I am delighted to continue building this world.”
Justus Riesenkampff, EVP Nordics & Benelux, Beta Film: “Maxima has miraculously redefined the genre: It is not primarily a drama about royal power and political intrigue but a touching contemporary love story that stands out creatively with the brilliant Delfina Chaves in the lead. The Dutch royal house is not a known international brand, so the series had to be convincing and stand for itself to become a worldwide hit, which it did. In the second season, you can feel that the makers have simply cracked it and the premium style and tone of the show is even more convincing and entertaining. With The Other Royals – A Maxima Story, we will continue this franchise success and show more great love stories that will resonate with a worldwide audience.”
Maxima herself will return to Dutch screens on March 14th with the premiere of season two. Produced by Millstreet Films in co-production with FBO and Beta Film, it follows Maxima from her wedding preparations to her coronation ten years later, as she navigates the constant struggle between her family and her personal ambitions.
Beta Film is handling international sales for all series.
