The Brazilian broadcaster has been nominated in the News and Current Affairs categories. The winners will be announced in NY on September 24.

The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences today announced the nominees for the 2019 News & Current Affairs categories.

The 8 nominees span 6 countries: Brazil, Nigeria, Sweden, Qatar, Russia, and the United Kingdom.

Brazil’s TV Globo is nominated in both categories for the coverage of the killing of city councilor Marielle Franco (News) and 11 days in North Korea during the 70th anniversary of the nation’s founding (Current Affairs).

Additionally, BBC World Service garnered its first ever Emmy nomination for a program from its Nigeria feed, making it a first nomination for BBC World Service and for Nigeria. The Current Affairs report covers the country’s devastating addiction to codeine cough syrup which reveals the horrors of an opioid crisis and exposes the corrupt forces behind it.

“Broadcast journalists give a voice to those who are silenced and shine a light on what is hidden, as demonstrated in this year’s nominated programs,” said Bruce L. Paisner, President & CEO of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

“I believe it is more than ever our collective responsibility to protect their work; and defend freedom of the press, one of the great bulwarks of liberty.”

Winners will be presented with Emmys in New York on September 24, at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. The International Emmy winners will be recognized alongside their American news and documentary peers.
