The company unveils format and coproduction partnerships in Cannes.

On Monday, the 21st, Globo held a cocktail party at Mipcom to announce its main deals and news for the international market. Manuel Belmar, Director of Digital Products, opened the event celebrating the 100th anniversary of Grupo Globo, highlighting the company’s audiovisual production capacity.

“Here at Globo we are passionate about telling stories. Stories that inspire and travel the world becoming part of the lives of millions of people. Every year, we put together more than 1.1 thousand drama episodes and 2.1 thousand tv show episodes”, commented Manuel.

After that, Alex Medeiros, head of Drama, Documentaries & Film for Globoplay’s Original Productions, spoke about Globo’s recently signed coproduction deal with Beta Film for the development of the police drama Discipline (working title). Globo will have exclusive rights in Brazil and Beta Film will handle international sales.

Discipline is created by Konrad Dantas, founder of KondZilla, a production company nominated for an International Emmy, a Latin Grammy and winner of 3 Lions at the CANNES Festival; and by showrunner and creative producer Felipe Braga (Sintonia, Lov3, Samantha!). Braga’s LB Entertainment and KondZilla will produce for Globo, Beta Film and newly established production boutique Janeiro Studios, led by former Beta CCO Koby Gal Raday, who was also present at the event.

“Koby has been a tireless partner, who helped us shape a development deal, where our mutual concern was to find a powerful story that could work for Brazil and international distribution”, said Alex.

Regarding the formats sales, Angela Colla, Head of International Business and Coproductions, highlighted the first adaptation of Brazil Avenue, announced at Mipcom last year. The result of an unprecedented agreement between Globo and Ay Yapim, Turkey’s leading telenovela producer, Leyla premiered on the Turkish channel NOW, with general direction by Hilal Saral (from ‘Fatmagul’).

“This agreement allowed Ay Yapim to make their own version of Brazil Avenue with our artistic consultancy. By that, they will be able to bring the plot closer to its audience, maintaining our successful premises. Brazil Avenue now is Leyla and we couldn’t be more proud”, said Angela

Angela, along with Christos Kompos, Program Director from Alpha TV, Nina Peters, Managing Director & Head of Business Affairs, and Christian Friedrichs, Producer, both from ndF, announced strategic partnerships for international adaptations of the series ‘Justice: Life is not fair’ and ‘The Others’ for Greece and also of ‘The Others’ for German-speaking territories. This is the result of Globos format strategy, that started last year.

In Greece, Justice: Life is not fair” will be produced by Primavisione and broadcast by Alpha TV, who will also produce and exhibit The Others.

For German-speaking territories, one of the largest independent German production companies, ndF (neue deutsche Filmgesellschaft), takes over production.

Created by Manuela Dias (A Mothers Love), Justice: Life is not fair is an anthology series and was nominated for the International Emmy for Best Actress with Adriana Esteves and Best Drama Series. With independent but interconnected stories, the production proposes a reflection on fairness, justice and revenge.

The Others, created by Lucas Paraizo, (Under Pressure), follows what begins as a typical teen quarrel between neighbors and escalates into a shocking drama that explores the boundaries of parenting and the consequences of a lack of dialogue.

“We understand that our stories exceed the limits of the “finished product” and by making them available in different formats we enable our partners to work on them according to their needs, creating opportunities.” commented Angela.

To conclude, Angela and Ignacio Orive, CEO of BR&360 went to stage to speak about the partnership to distribute its live action shows for kids worldwide. The deal includes all media rights of high quality and long running live action shows such as B.B.D. – Blue Building Detectives, Game Crashers, Guess whos cooking and Gaby Star. With this exclusive agreement, Brands & Rights 360 will help Globo expand its kids content presence all around the world
