Buena Vista International will distribute Los Tigres in theaters in Spain and later release it exclusively on Movistar Plus+. Film Factory will handle international sales.
This week began the shooting of Los Tigres, the new film by Alberto Rodríguez, an atmospheric character-driven thriller written by the director himself with Rafael Cobos. The film is an original Movistar Plus+ production, co-produced with Kowalski Films, Feelgood Media, Mazagón Films AIE, and the French company Le Pacte.
Filming, which began on May 6 and will take place over nine weeks in natural settings in the province of Huelva, Algeciras, and on the sets of Ciudad de la Luz (Alicante), mixes the wild nature of the Atlantic Ocean in southern Spain, near one of the largest nature reserves in Europe, Doñana Park, and the unknown world of industrial diving.
Matalascañas and its beaches, Punta Umbría, Mazagón, the Huelva estuary, El Rompido, Saltés Island, Palos de la Frontera, the Aracena reservoir, an oil tanker, a tugboat and its petrochemical refinery, as well as the city of Huelva and its port, will be the locations for the land shooting and the complex aquatic and underwater scenes.
Los Tigres is the new work of Alberto Rodríguez, one of the most renowned directors of his generation. His films, such as the multi-award winning La isla mínima, winner of 10 Goya awards, and the Silver Shell at the San Sebastian Film Festival for best actor, combine powerful visual universes. Rodríguez’s ability to create captivating stories has earned him wide recognition, both from the public and from national and international critics, and he has been nominated for the Goya for best director a total of five times.
Rafael Cobos, who co-wrote the screenplay for Los Tigres with Rodríguez, is one of Spain’s most prestigious screenwriters, winner of two Goya awards, both together with Alberto Rodríguez, for Best Screenplay for La isla mínima and Best Adapted Screenplay for El hombre de las mil caras (The Man of a Thousand Faces).
In the words of Alberto Rodriguez: “Los Tigres is a film that speaks of the end of the capabilities of an almost amphibious man, someone who is coming to understand that his time is over and that he is not special or different, but just one more. Someone who suddenly has to transform himself to understand others and survive in the world that surrounds him and that he does not understand, out of the water. Ultimately, the characters will journey to a place as recondite and unfathomable as the seabed. A journey to someone as close and unknown as your sister and her past”.
This story stars Antonio de la Torre (two-time Goya best actor winner for El Reino and Azuloscurocasinegro, and up to 14 times nominated for his eclectic acting work) and Bárbara Lennie (Goya best actress for Magical Girl; she has been nominated on four other occasions). The cast is completed by Joaquín Núñez (Goya for Best New Actor for Grupo 7), José Miguel Manzano Bazalo “Skone” (a well-known rapper from Malaga who is making his acting debut), and Silvia Acosta (Fueron los días, Lava, Mamacruz).
