Produced by Luis Cabrera, from Miami

The development of vertical fiction is a project that has placed TVN Chile back in the spotlight of the digital ecosystem, with a new business model here to stay and shaping up as a high-value trend in the industry. This was highlighted by Javier Goldschmied, Director of Programming at Chile’s public broadcaster, in conversation with ttvnews during the first day of Content Americas in Miami.

“We’re thrilled; we’re about to premiere our second vertical fiction title, Mi marido me robó la memoria, and we released Auditoría de amor a couple of months ago,” says Goldschmied. “Auditoría de amor, 50 episodes of a minute and a half each, exceeded all our expectations; it has reached well over 25 million views and a pleased audience.”

According to the executive, vertical fiction has repositioned TVN within the digital ecosystem. “We were looking for a mixed model that had to do with being able to sell this to agencies and clients, and in the first stage, making it available free of charge to audiences across all digital platforms.”

Goldschmied explained that this is an integrated business model in which brands participated from the very beginning and recognized its appeal. “All of that has pushed us to continue driving this line of business, in addition to the traditional one we’re used to. We’re making narrative adjustments to the upcoming titles; we’re about to start shooting the third title.”

The logic of this model, Goldschmied said, is to build volume so that people can choose among several titles. “It also includes a paywall, premium options, mixed models, ads, and tokens—a whole range of elements that make this model work the way it does in Asia and other territories. We’re determined to keep doing this; it puts TVN in conversation with the future.”

Original and exportable content

Goldschmied also highlights the long-term value of these contents. “They are 100% original content that is ours; we have the full scripts, which means we could eventually even sell them or host them on third-party platforms. We have a plan for at least 10 more vertical titles, releasing one per month. That gives us strength, responsibility, and a deeper understanding of the product, monetizing it differently and bringing in audiences that are not necessarily watching us on traditional television, which I think is one of the biggest challenges.”

Looking ahead, the goal is clear. “This should be a line of business that can be self-financed autonomously and generate additional revenues beyond those of traditional television. We like it when people watching free-to-air TV know that there is a vertical product as well; a phenomenon of cross-audiences is created,” he said.

A strong moment for TVN

At the same time, the channel is going through a strong overall period. “Last year was a good year for TVN; we increased all our ratings and all our numbers. We had entertainment, vertical fiction, and many sports throughout the year. TVN has established itself as the channel of all sports, not only soccer. We have cycling, artistic gymnastics, and all the world gymnastics championships held around the world, and we reached the Cycling World Championships. We have a sports ecosystem that amplifies and seeks to give visibility to other sports that are not directly present on free-to-air television,” he concluded.

In an industry as evolving as the entertainment industry, it is imperative to stay one step ahead of the latest trends and know what the international market demands in terms of content.

To this end, ttvnews presents the Buyers: What are buyers looking for? initiative to learn first-hand about the programming needs of buyers around the world.

This time, we spoke to Javier Goldschmied, Programming Director at TVN of Chile:

What kind of content or formats or genres are you looking for at industry events?

We are looking for entertainment, and we are also looking for packaged programs. We have packaged teleseries schedules. Furthermore, we are re-releasing Fuerza Mujer, which is a very successful Turkish teleseries, following Mi nombre es. This is what we are looking for to give continuity to prime-time entertainment.

What content would you highlight among those that worked best for the company in 2024? It may be by rating or another factor that you want to highlight.

With what has happened with Carmen Gloria and Ahora Caigo in the afternoon, they are programs consolidated during this year and have been super competitive.

We have to do double work in what comes from here on because the normal thing is to believe that this type of program will always work, and what one should not do is to fatigue the program until people stop watching it.

Where do you see the greatest growth potential for the company today, and how is this reflected in your programming strategy?

What we are doing in Carmen Gloria and Ahora Caigo is to give them a certain renewal. New concepts in Carmen Gloria and new games in Ahora Caigo, so that people can understand that a format allows variations and innovation concerning the type of game they will find from March 2025.

With Mi nombre es, although it has allowed us to be competitive in prime time, we are still lacking. So, I believe that Mi nombre es has fulfilled its duty to position us as a channel in a time slot in which we were not being watched, and what we have to do now is to grow more and consolidate ourselves with an entertainment strategy.

It is complex because competition is powerful in other channels, and our prime time starts at 10:40 pm, but it is a habit already installed. Especially in the summer, the program is on until late; people are used to watching TV until late, but it is something we measure week by week.

In the case of Mi nombre es, we have given it variation with special coverage, with international guests, with celebrities who have been doubles to open the programs.

We always try to give the audience something different so that it does not remain as something that will always be the same and people can follow it daily, and there is something not to be missed.

We have been adding little things that allow the format to be extended, and there are already almost 90 chapters.

*By Luis Cabrera, Ana Paula Carreira and Fernando Moreno, from Miami, USA

With the help of entertainment formats such as Mi nombre es or Ahora caigo, and a big bet on original production, TVN Chile managed to establish itself as a major channel on Chilean broadcast TV in 2024.

“What has happened with Carmen Gloria a tu servicio and Ahora Caigo in the afternoons, is that they are programs that have been consolidated during this year and have been super competitive,” began Javier Goldschmied, programming director of TVN Chile, in a conversation with ttvnews at the current edition of Content Americas in Miami.

“Now we have to do double work with what is coming next,” he warned. “Because the normal thing is to believe that they will always work and what one should not do is tire out those programs, and that people stop watching them and there is no replacement.”

Thus, the executive explained, TVN seeks to renew its hit formats, “with new sections in Carmen Gloria and new games in Ahora Caigo,” he said. “So people can also understand that the format allows variations and new things with the type of games they will find as of March. That is essential to give it continuity in 2025.”

This concept of renewal also applies to its prime time formats, where its latest great success, Mi nombre es, has managed to make them competitive again in prime time.

“Mi nombre es fulfilled the duty of positioning us as a channel in a time where they were not watching us and what we have to do is grow more, to be able to consolidate ourselves with an entertainment strategy,” he explained. “We have given it variation with special coverage, international guests, celebrities… we always try to give something different to the audience so that they do not believe that it will always be something the same.”

And speaking of formats and original production, another big business area for the channel has been the growth of its production hub, where just a couple of months ago the production of the Brazilian version of Ahora caigo: Acerte ou Caia, which is broadcast on Sundays by the Record TV network, was announced. It is being recorded at TVN’s facilities.

This project marks a milestone in audiovisual collaboration between both countries, expanding the channel’s business model, generating significant revenues exceeding 100 thousand dollars.

In addition, this same month of January, the channel celebrated the success of its Projects Area, created in 2024 together with an online platform that has opened the doors to Chilean and foreign producers to present their proposals quickly and accessibly.

Thus, the channel, which in 2024 opted for family entertainment with Ahora Caigo and Mi nombre es, seeks to expand its entertainment catalog by receiving ideas for programs and content in all possible formats.

*Produced by Luis Cabrera and Ana Paula Carreira, reporting from Cannes, France.

TVN Chile has revamped its programming by incorporating shows like Ahora Caigo and Mi nombre es. This gives the Chilean network the opportunity to be competitive again in the afternoon and prime time slots. The challenge ahead is to continue betting on original production.

This is what Javier Goldschmied, TVN Chile’s Programming Director, told ttvnews. “We’re thrilled to be producing entertainment shows. We have a very competitive afternoon slot with Ahora Caigo, hosted by Daniel Fuenzalida, which has made us think about what other entertainment we can bring to our audiences,” he said.

Continuing along these lines, a few weeks ago, they premiered Mi nombre es, a talent format that features new urban singers and impersonators. “Chile is a country full of talent, and they’ve come to this show, making it possible for TVN once again to become a part of Chilean homes with entertainment programming. We’re pleased about that because TVN is back in the prime time competition, with a very successful afternoon lineup that starts with Carmen Gloria a tu servicio, followed by Ahora Caigo, then the news, and finally prime time.”

For Goldschmied, TVN’s challenge is to keep producing. “We have a competitive space with our productions and are good at producing. I think pre-packaged content works for certain time slots. Still, I feel we are responsible for bringing original productions into homes, something that different family members can watch. I believe that’s our main challenge.”

The Programming Director also mentioned that while they would like to create fiction, now is not the time. “We’re currently balancing the channel, but we’re happy with what we’re doing, and it’s essential to keep creating, to show that TVN has a heart and is alive. Additionally, we offer entertainment, the number one informative channel on cable TV, and a top-rated children’s channel that is also very competitive. We face a multi-platform challenge. We have an ecosystem of content we need to take to where the future is heading. Likewise, we have FAST channels, a huge archive, and we’re working on building this for the next five years,” he noted.

Regarding their participation in Mipcom, Goldschmied highlighted, “We attend these markets to have conversations about where formats are headed, what new things are coming, where fiction productions are going, and especially the discussions around FAST. We have a multi-platform ecosystem, so generating conversations about where content is going, understanding what the industry is doing, and contributing to those discussions is crucial.”

Izzet Pinto, founder and CEO of Global Agency, commented that the drama has now entered Latin America with Chile. “We think it will be very successful in Chile. It deals openly and bravely with a topic never explored in Turkey,” he said.

The captivating story is Turkey’s most talked about series in the last two seasons. It is represented by a stellar cast consisting of Barış Kılıç, Evrim Alasya, Sıla Turkoglu, and Dogukan Gungor.

One Love tells the captivating story of idealistic Doga, who falls madly in love in college with the charming Fatih, a man from a devout family whose values clash with her mother’s, creating a touching drama as they try to overcome their differences. Doga’s life plans are turned upside down, and her mother is shaken when she refuses to have an abortion and marries him. With her devastated mother convinced that religion will condemn their marriage, Doga and Fatih face a battle for their love to triumph over this culture clash. Her mother, too, faces a struggle that triggers significant changes in her attitude, enriching a complex love story that unites two families separated by worlds but sharing the same profound truths.

Last Tuesday, December 14, TVN in Chile premiered the Turkish drama For My Family, which proved to be another successful bid for the Turkish genre for the channel.

The ATV drama premiered under the local title Todo por mi familia, and settled in second place between 11:41 p.m. and 12:51 a.m., with an average rating of 9.9 points, remaining only two tenths behind Mega’s 10.1 rating during the time slot, and surpassing CHV and Canal 13, which scored 6.8 and 4.4 points respectively.

The commercial rating was also good for TVN, since the new fiction averaged 3.3 points, occupying the second position.

The drama tells the story of Kadir, Omer, Asiye and Emel, four brothers who are orphaned after losing their father and mother on the same day under strange circumstances. After this painful loss and having no family to take care of them, they must leave their home and are forced to live in deep poverty.

The villain of the story is Akif Atakul, the person responsible for the death of his parents and who tries to cover up his actions by allowing the brothers to study and work at their school. In this new stage, the paths of the rich and the poor intersect, creating difficulties for the lives of these brothers and sisters and those close to them, but their values, their brotherhood, love and desire to get ahead will teach them to face everything together.

Locally titled Kardeşlerim, the series premiered in February this year in Turkey and immediately became a top-rated audience success, leading to sales in 30 countries. His audience is loyal not only on television, but he also has a large digital community that transformed his YouTube channel into one of the most followed of Turkish fictions.
