According to the Wall Street Journal, Paramount Global initiated talks with Comcast to evaluate a partnership for the merger of Paramount+ and Peacock streaming in the EEUU. Although there are no official statements to date, it is estimated that the alliance seeks to join the streaming arena through a partnership or joint venture to face its most powerful rivals in the United States.

The news comes after Fox Corp, Walt Disney, ESPN, and Warner Bros Discovery said earlier this month that they would launch a joint sports streaming service, drawing from their extensive professional and college sports rights portfolio.

Paramount’s streaming service, Paramount+, is home to Star Trek programming, originals like 1883 from super-producer Taylor Sheridan, and simulcasts of CBS soccer games, while Comcast’s Peacock is known for live soccer and soccer, originals like Poker Face and a deep library with shows like The Office.

Paramount has been pumping money into its fast-growing but unprofitable Paramount+ streaming unit, and in November, it said investments peaked a year ahead of schedule.

Reuters reported that analysts have stressed the need for mergers among smaller streaming companies to help monetize the business.

Paramount plans to lay off about 800 employees, or about 3% of its workforce, a source familiar with the situation told Reuters earlier this week, as the media company looks to cut costs and return to profit growth this year.

Paramount+ today announced the start of filming for its first French original drama, The Signal, produced by Gaumont in association with Paramount Television International Studios. The six-episode series created by François Uzan (Lupin) based on the best-seller by Maxime Chattam (published by Albin Michel) is shooting from June to October in Brittany.

The Signal is a fantastic thriller set against a backdrop of psychological drama. By moving to the small Breton island of Kernolé, the Dormeuil family hopes to make a fresh start. Olivia (40), a successful journalist, is pregnant with her second child. She has put her career on hold, and her husband Paul (40) has found a position as a doctor on the island. Their daughter Camille (15), on the other hand, is dragging her feet. At odds with her mother, whom she blames for always putting her career first, the inventive teenager with a passion for science has only one interest in the move: the powerful electromagnetic disturbances present on the island may enable her to prove her grand theory.

Camille believes there’s a link between waves and the afterlife… However, shortly after the Dormeuils’ arrival, a troubling sequence of events unfolds on the island, including a string of gruesome accidents under investigation by Detective Aby Keita (35). The more deaths happen, the more Camille detects disturbing spectral waves, and the more Olivia feels uneasy in this house that seems to know the terrible secret she and her husband have been hiding for ten years. To save their family and reveal the island’s buried secrets, Olivia and Camille will have to reconcile and unite, before plunging deeper into the darkness and facing their own demons.

The Signal stars Clotilde Hesme (Les Revenants, Lupin), Annabelle Lengronne (Un Petit frère) and Gregory Montel (Call My Agent). The author of the eponymous book that inspired the series, Maxime Chattam, also makes a cameo appearance. Other actors include Sarah Pachoud, Leina Djema and Riad Gahmi.

François Uzan is the series creator and showrunner. He also wrote the screenplay alongside Maya Haffar and Delphine Agut. Directors are Slimane-Baptiste Berhoun and Karim Ouaret.

The series is produced by Isabelle Degeorges and Aurélie Iniesta for Gaumont in association with Paramount Television International Studios.

The series will be available on Paramount+ in France, Canada, the U.K., Australia, Latin America, the Caribbean, Austria, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Switzerland in 2024.

Paramount Global presented billion-dollar losses, 1.12 billion dollars to be exact, in the financial report corresponding to the first quarter (Q1) of 2023, with the numbers resulting in the high investment made for the expansion of the Paramount+ platform, the restructuring of Showtime and the sensible drop in ad revenue from TV advertisers (11% less, year-over-year), in addition to a reduction in profits in other areas such as cinema and licensing.

Despite this, Bob Bakish, CEO of Paramount Global, is optimistic about the future outlook for the business: “Our momentum is strong,” he said in a conference call given after the release of financial results. “We see signs of stabilization in the ad market [and] a path to streaming profitability and a return to free cash flow in 2024.”

On the positive side, Paramount+ surpassed 60 million subscribers around the world, adding more than 4.1 million during the first four months of the year and seeing its earnings grow by 65% year-over-year. According to the company, global subscriber growth “was driven by a strong slate of content that includes top originals like 1923, Tulsa King and the returns of Mayor of Kingstown and Star Trek: Picard, hit film franchises in Top Gun: Maverick and Teen Wolf: The Movie, as well as the NFL Playoffs”.

Pluto TV, for its part, reached 80 million active users and ranked as the number one option among FAST services around the world.

In total, revenue from DTC (direct-to-consumer) products increased 39% year-over-year. Operating Profit before Depreciation and Amortization. (OIBDA) fell, instead, by 55 million dollars year-over-year, due to the “high costs to sustain the growth of Paramount+”.

In TV media, CBS is heading into its 15th year in a row at the top of the ratings. Affiliate and subscription revenue increased 12% as the combination of linear and streaming continues to deliver net growth for the business.

On the other hand, TV earnings fell by 8% year-over-year, with a drop of 11% in terms of advertisers.

Licenses and other revenue decreased 15% year-over-year, primarily reflecting a lower volume of licensed content.

Theatrical also reduced earnings by 6% year-over-year. Theatrical revenues decreased $4 million, reflecting the timing and mix of new releases and licensing and other revenues decreased $35 million primarily due to lower revenues from consumer product licenses.

“Paramount continues to demonstrate the strength of its content engine, driving momentum across streaming, television and theatrical. This resulted in Paramount+ and Pluto TV reaching significant milestones with 60 million subscribers and 80 million MAUs, respectively, while CBS is poised to claim the #1 spot in broadcast for the 15th straight season,” Bakish noted in the press release. “Looking ahead, we are focused on continuing to drive market-leading streaming growth while navigating a dynamic macroeconomic environment. In addition, the updated dividend policy we have announced today will further enhance our ability to deliver long-term value for our shareholders as we move toward streaming profitability.”

At the end of 2022, Paramount announced the appointment of Eduardo Lebrija as executive VP and Regional Leader of Paramount Latin America.

And now, the executive arrived with his new role at Content Americas to take stock of what the group’s transformation was, and present some of his projects and initiatives in the region.

“We are going through an interesting transformation that was necessary,” the executive began by explaining to ttvnews. “We have a very robust international content portfolio, where we have free and paid streaming platforms, open and pay TV, and we do many events around it.”

Referring to his new role, he added: “So I think it was a way for us to adjust, taking this leadership and this commercial lead part, to be able to monetize all the platforms and really use the portfolio together to get more benefit out of it. It’s what they have commissioned me to do. To continue to work very hard on new projects throughout the region, growing and adding from Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile… everywhere in the region.”

The change also comes at a key moment for the industry, which continues to evolve in terms of platforms and players. “It’s an interesting moment,” Lebrija said. “It has advanced very quickly since streaming began very strongly, in all traditional media companies like ours today, they have been revolutionized. The adaptation time must be faster and faster and that is an important part of what I am trying to do with all the teams”.

Thus, today, the group is divided into three large verticals that cover film, TV and streaming. “Those are the three different large verticals that we have. And each one is divided, it depends on each region. In the case of Latin America, which is where I work, we have everything launched and everything advancing, and in progress”.

“It’s a market where the future is going to dictate a lot for other markets. We really have everything going. We launched first of all in the rest of the world, after the US, Paramount+.”

And to continue growing in the region, the executive explained that they will continue to bet heavily on original content, which he considers “key” when it comes to competing.

“We have the idea of betting on original production strongly. Dario Turovelsky is in charge of the VIS studios, in addition to Chilevision and Telefe. Original content continues to set the tone, without a doubt there are many plans and we will continue to grow because clearly the original content is today what really makes the difference and is key. There are many plans to continue producing a lot,” he explained.

“Also betting on sports,” he added. “We ventured into a great soccer league, the Premier League for Mexico and Central America, followed by the Libertadores, we are about to launch it on Paramount+ and Pluto TV. The results that the Premier League has given us are extraordinary. I think the ecosystem is complemented by sports. Entertainment plus sports we believe is the formula”, he concluded.

David Nevins, the president and CEO of Paramount Premium Group and CCO of Scripted Series at Paramount+, will leave the company after 12 years, adding his name to that of Tatiana Rodríguez and JC Acosta, other long-standing executives that were announced last week, also leave their roles at Paramount behind.

Nevins, who had taken over as CCO of Scripted Series at Paramount + just a year ago, will leave his position at the end of 2022, as announced in an internal statement reproduced by Variety, in which he claimed to be thinking about “the next phase of my life and my career”.

“Over the past several months I’ve come to the conclusion that I am ready for the next phase of my life and my career,” Nevins said in a note to staff which was obtained by Variety Thursday. “The industry is transforming rapidly, and I am genuinely excited about what the future holds.”

“Most importantly, the leadership team led by Jana Winograde, Gary Levine, Scott Mills and Nicole Clemens are more than ready. The 2023 slate is set, and I believe the coming year’s schedules from Showtime, BET, and Paramount Television Studios are going to be the most ambitious and exciting group of shows we’ve ever put out in a single year. I can’t wait to watch it happen,” he added.

Nevins’ note was followed by another from Bob Bakish, CEO of Paramount Global, in which, in addition to thanking Nevins for his performance, he indicated that Showtime’s OTT teams will move into Paramount Streaming, reporting to Tom Ryan; BET will now move under George Cheeks’ group, as will Paramount Television Studios, where it will continue to operate as a studio alongside CBS Studios.
