Paramount+ will continue broadcasting the CONMEBOL Libertadores in Brazil through 2030 after renewing its rights for the 2027-2030 cycle. The new agreement guarantees the platform 41 matches per season and adds the tournament final to its broadcast package.

The renewal is part of the new distribution of audiovisual rights for the competition in the Brazilian market, where Paramount+ will share the pay-TV and streaming package with SporTV, Grupo Globo’s sports channel. Each broadcaster will carry 41 matches per edition, compared with the 82 matches included in Paramount+’s package during the previous rights cycle.

Coverage will span the competition’s preliminary rounds through its decisive stages, including the group stage, round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and final.

The agreement also marks a shift in Paramount+’s programming strategy for the competition, as the platform will hold rights to broadcast the final during the new cycle. The move expands its involvement in one of South America’s leading sporting events and reinforces its investment in live sports for the Brazilian market.

“Live sports are a key pillar of our content strategy,” said Augusto Rovegno, senior vice president of content at Paramount+ for Latin America, commenting on the renewal. According to the executive, the agreement aims to continue delivering top-tier competitions that add value for subscribers.

The new rights distribution also includes previously awarded agreements with Globo, which will retain free-to-air broadcast rights, and ESPN, which will maintain its main pay-TV and streaming package for the 2027-2030 period.

Under this arrangement, the Libertadores will expand its presence across multiple distribution platforms in Brazil, while Paramount+ will maintain its connection with the tournament for another four seasons. Brazilian subscribers to the platform will also continue to have access to other sports properties in its portfolio, including UFC and Zuffa Boxing.

Paramount Skydance Corporation (PSKY) and Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) announced that their merger is expected to close on October 6, 2026.

In addition, Paramount CEO David Ellison announced Ynon Kreiz will be Co-CEO of the anticipated merged company, effective at closing.

Upon closing, Ellison will remain Chairman and CEO of the newly combined company, and Kreiz will serve as Co-CEO and join the Board of Directors. Together, they will oversee the combined company’s businesses, which will report jointly to both.

Kreiz, who will start at Paramount on October 5, 2026, joins Ellison from Mattel, a leading global play and family entertainment company where he has served as Chairman and CEO since 2018, leading an unprecedented transformation of the business and the execution of its multi-platform, brand-centric strategy.

Together, Ellison and Kreiz will lead the anticipated combined company as one team, pairing complementary skillsets to maximize the full upside of the merger under a comprehensive long-term strategy. Ellison will focus on the company’s long-term strategy, creative vision and direction, including its talent relationships, strategic partnerships, technology and capital allocation. Kreiz will focus on the company’s day-to-day management and integration of the combined businesses.

David Ellison said: “Bringing together Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery to create a next-generation global media company is a transformational moment for our industry. Leading it takes a rare combination of strategic vision, operational depth and experience running a public company at the highest levels of media. Ynon brings all three. In Ynon, I’m adding a partner with strong leadership and the operating firepower this integration demands. It’s a division of labor built on our complementary strengths, with clear reporting lines and it lets me focus where I can contribute most: long-term strategy, the company’s overall creative direction, talent relationships, strategic partnerships, technology and capital allocation. We’re like-minded, we see this business the same way and there’s no one I’d rather partner with. Together we’ll build one integrated company that is creator-first, tech-forward and built to scale globally.”

Ynon Kreiz said: “I’m excited to partner with David to build the next-generation media and entertainment company — bringing together premium content and iconic brands at the highest quality and scale, serving global audiences across every entertainment vertical and distribution platform. David is a unique talent and executive: a rare blend of business acumen, creative instinct, and clear vision. I very much share that vision, and I’m inspired by what we can accomplish together. The industry is at an inflection point, demanding evolution, investment, and a willingness to rethink business models. I look forward to working with the leadership team to build a cohesive global entertainment platform — one that stands out with best-in-class operations and execution powered by technology, with unparalleled creative relationships, production capabilities, and global reach. We will continue empowering creators, make this company a greenfield for innovation and storytelling, and collaborate with key partners to reach and engage fans worldwide.”

The only remaining obstacle is litigation brought by California and 11 other US states.

Paramount Skydance Corporation confirmed that it has obtained all regulatory clearances required under the merger agreement to proceed with its proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD).

The eight-month review process involved competition authorities in 68 countries, including the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Brazil, China, COMESA and the United States. Mexico was the latest country to clear the transaction.

Paramount said regulators assessed the deal based on the current competitive dynamics of the global entertainment industry and consistently found no grounds to block the transaction.

In the United States, the Department of Justice had already concluded its antitrust review, determining that the transaction was unlikely to harm competition or consumers across areas including streaming, linear television, and film production and distribution.

According to Paramount, the closing of the transaction is now subject only to litigation brought by 12 U.S. state attorneys general, led by California.

We are grateful that competition authorities in nearly 70 jurisdictions worldwide have independently and thoroughly reviewed this transaction and reached the same conclusion: it is pro-competitive, pro-consumer and pro-worker,” said David Ellison, CEO of Paramount.

The executive said the lawsuit brought by California and 11 other states represents the “final obstacle” to completing the transaction, arguing that the combination would create a stronger competitor with greater capacity to invest in premium content, support creative talent and workers, and deliver more high-quality entertainment to audiences.

Paramount has urged the state attorneys general to engage in good-faith negotiations to resolve the litigation and clear the way for the transaction to close. Ellison added that the company remains willing to work constructively with the states and consider commitments and concessions to reach a resolution.

Regulators Challenge Antitrust Arguments

Paramount argues that the conclusions reached by international competition authorities contradict several of the central arguments advanced by the 12 US states, particularly regarding theatrical film distribution, film production and competition in linear television.

In the pay-TV sector, the European Commission and the US Department of Justice recognized streaming as a significant competitive force for linear networks, rather than viewing competition exclusively through a cable-versus-cable lens.

In theatrical film distribution, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) concluded that the transaction was unlikely to substantially lessen competition and noted that the combined company would continue to face competition from studios including Disney, Sony, Universal, Amazon MGM, StudioCanal and numerous independent providers.

Brazil’s competition authority, CADE, treated film distribution as a single relevant market, without the additional segmentation between higher- and lower-grossing films proposed by the U.S. state attorneys general.

Paramount also highlighted findings from COMESA, the competition authority covering Eastern and Southern Africa, which described the theatrical film market as highly competitive, dynamic and driven by the performance of individual titles.

Film Production

Regarding the potential impact on film output and quality, Paramount said regulators found no basis for claims that the transaction would lead to a reduction in content production.

The company also pointed to its commitment to release at least 30 high-quality films annually once the businesses are combined.

According to Paramount, regulators across multiple markets examined key aspects of the transaction, including theatrical distribution, film production, streaming and content licensing, without identifying antitrust concerns that would warrant blocking the deal.

Paramount said the findings across the 68 jurisdictions support its position that the transaction is lawful and does not raise significant competition concerns.

US Litigation Remains Final Obstacle

Despite securing regulatory clearances across international markets, the transaction remains subject to litigation brought by the 12 US states. Paramount said the lawsuit is generating additional costs and delaying the closing of the deal.

The company has publicly indicated that it is open to reaching an agreement with the states to resolve the dispute. The litigation now represents the main remaining regulatory and legal hurdle to the acquisition of WBD.

The transaction, announced in February 2026, would see Paramount acquire Warner Bros. Discovery for US$31 per share, in a deal valued at approximately US$110 billion on an enterprise-value basis. The companies plan to combine their production, streaming, television and entertainment assets to create a global media group.

Paramount Global Content Distribution has secured licensing deals in 100 key international territories for The F Ward, which was commissioned by Stan, making it the fastest-selling Australian drama ever pre-launch.

Co-produced by Roadshow Rough Diamond and CBS Studios, the buzzy new six-part medical drama stars Anna Friel and follows a group of young medical interns sent to the underfunded Pines Hospital in Sydney for one final chance to complete their medical training. Here, they must overcome their insecurities, their past, and their own expectations in a place where the stakes are life and death.

The series launched last month on Stan in Australia, with The AU Review calling it “funny, heartfelt, (and) sharply written,” The Sydney Morning Herald noting the series is “excellent” and The West Australian called The F Ward“must-see TV.”

Broadcasters and streaming platforms acquiring the series include:

Channel 4 (United Kingdom)
SkyShowtime (Albania, Andorra, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Norway, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden)
Claro video (Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay)
AMedia Networks (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan)
Streamz (Belgium)
CBC for CBC TV and CBC Gem (English-speaking Canada)
Quebecor Content (French-speaking Canada)
COSMOTE TV (Greece)
Siminn (Iceland)
RTE (Ireland)
JioHotstar (India)
Sky NZ (New Zealand)
HBO Asia (Southeast Asia, Taiwan and Hong Kong)
MEGOGO & Kyivstar TV (Ukraine)

“Medical dramas have universal appeal, and the show’s underdog story and rising young cast gave it a real breakout energy,” said Don McGregor, President, Global Content Licensing, Paramount. “Buyers around the world moved quickly to secure ‘The F Ward,’ making it the fastest pre-launch sale ever for an Australian drama, and that alone speaks to the strength of this production.”

“The audience response in Australia has been truly remarkable. Anna Friel and this exceptional cast have captured the altruistic ambitions, humour and heart of so many within our health system, which has resonated far beyond our first hopes,” said Dan Edwards, co-creator and producer. “We’re delighted to learn the show has found so many significant partners around the world so quickly. Global audiences can now experience Australia’s greatest social service through the lens of a group of smart, young, almost broken intern doctors and their unconventional mentors.”

The series stars International Emmy Award winner Anna Friel (Pushing Daisies, Marcella), Ioane Sa’ula (Bump), Lola Bond (Last Days of the Space Age), Dan Wyllie (Love My Way), Alex Fitzalan (Prosper), Emily Barclay (Babyteeth), Annie Boyle (Colin from Accounts) and Rishab Kern.

Rounding out the cast are Arka Das (Sunny Nights), Paula Arundell (The Last Anniversary), Jeremy Sims (The Artful Dodger), Susie Porter (The Artful Dodger), Toby Schmitz (Boy Swallows Universe), and Alex Dimitriades (Strife).

The F Ward is co-created by Dan Edwards (Bump) and Kelsey Munro (Bump) with executive producer John Edwards, and producers Dan Edwards and Kelsey Munro for Roadshow Rough Diamond. Stan Executive Producers are Andy Ryan and Michael Healy with Lindsey Martin and Dave Clarke for CBS Studios International. Discovery, which could see it paused until June 2027.

Paramount Skydance has agreed to delay its US$110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery until a court rules on a lawsuit filed by California and 11 other states challenging the merger.

The pause, which could last until next June, increases uncertainty around the deal and may cost Paramount up to US$1.7 billion in delay fees if the merger is not completed by September 30.

State attorneys general, led by California, contend that combining Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery would significantly reduce competition in film distribution, television, and streaming. They also warned that allowing the companies to complete the transaction before the case is resolved could cause irreversible changes, including layoffs, restructuring, and the integration of assets that would be difficult to unwind.

Paramount has pushed back against those claims, arguing that the merger would strengthen its ability to compete with technology and streaming giants such as Netflix and Amazon. The company maintains that the combined business would benefit consumers by producing more content and operating more efficiently in an increasingly competitive media landscape.

Paramount says it will defend the transaction in court.

Discovery, clearing the deal under the EU Merger Regulation after the companies agreed to a series of commitments aimed at preserving competition in film distribution across the European Economic Area.

The European Commission has approved Paramount Skydance Corporation’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, subject to a series of commitments designed to preserve competition in the European Economic Area (EEA). The deal was cleared under the EU Merger Regulation after the Commission concluded that the proposed remedies adequately addressed its competition concerns.

Both Paramount and Warner are major producers and distributors of films and audiovisual content, including television series and streaming services. The companies argued that the merger would strengthen Paramount’s ability to compete in an entertainment industry that is increasingly shifting toward streaming platforms.

During its investigation, the Commission assessed the impact of the transaction across several markets, including film production and distribution, audiovisual content licensing, television channels, and streaming services. It found that competition in film production would remain strong, with major studios such as Disney, Universal, Sony, Amazon MGM, A24, Lionsgate, and several European producers continuing to compete in the market.

However, regulators raised concerns about film distribution in countries where Paramount and Universal currently cooperate through their joint venture, United International Pictures (UIP). The Commission concluded that adding Warner’s film catalogue to that partnership could reduce competition, potentially leading to less favorable distribution terms for cinema operators and, ultimately, consumers.

To resolve these concerns, Paramount agreed to divest its stake in UIP within 13 months of completing the transaction and accepted a series of 10-year commitments preventing joint film distribution arrangements with Universal in the EEA. The company also agreed not to move Warner’s or Paramount’s film distribution to distributors that also handle Universal’s or Disney’s films in specified EEA markets.

Following a market test, the Commission concluded that these commitments fully addressed the identified competition issues and approved the acquisition. The decision remains conditional on Paramount’s full compliance with the agreed remedies, which will be monitored by an independent trustee under the Commission’s supervision.

The European Commission’s approval comes as the transaction continues to face scrutiny in the United States. The deal has been temporarily paused while U.S. authorities and the courts review legal challenges related to the merger.

Discovery, granting a 14-day restraining order as a coalition of states argues the deal could reduce competition in the entertainment industry.

A federal judge has temporarily halted Paramount’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, giving opponents of the blockbuster media deal more time to challenge it in court.

The ruling grants a 14-day temporary restraining order requested by a coalition of 12 U.S. states, which argues that the transaction could violate antitrust laws by concentrating too much power in the entertainment industry.

A hearing to determine whether the pause should be extended is scheduled for early August.

In her decision, U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín said the states had presented substantial concerns that warranted delaying the merger while the legal dispute proceeds.

However, state officials insist that greater consolidation would ultimately limit consumer choice, weaken competition, and give the merged company outsized influence over Hollywood’s creative and distribution markets.

The court’s order also raises the stakes for Paramount’s timeline. Under the merger agreement, the company faces escalating financial penalties if the transaction is not completed by the Sept. 30 deadline.

The lawsuit marks the latest obstacle for one of the entertainment industry’s biggest proposed mergers. In addition to opposition from the coalition of states, the deal has drawn criticism from labor groups and others concerned about its potential impact on jobs, media diversity, and competition.
