TelevisaUnivision announced that it has entered into an agreement with HMTV DTC, LLC, an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Hemisphere Media Group to acquire Pantaya, a streaming platform in the U.S. for Spanish-language movies and series in exchange for cash plus certain Puerto Rican radio assets including WKAQ AM and KQ105 FM currently owned by TelevisaUnivision.

The addition of Pantaya’s content, subscribers and world class team further accelerates the transformation of TelevisaUnivision, effectively bolstering its global streaming offering ViX+, which is expected to launch in the second half of 2022.

“The acquisition of Pantaya, which includes renowned content titles such as Señorita 89 and A La Mala, is an exciting opportunity to build upon our strategic growth plan as we continue to redefine the global streaming landscape,” said TelevisaUnivision President and Chief Transformation Officer Pierluigi Gazzolo.

“We look forward to welcoming the Pantaya team, the existing subscribers, and having access to the thousands of hours of content assets which perfectly complement TelevisaUnivision’s prolific long-form content engine, industry-leading library, and extensive portfolio of IP and sports rights. In April we launched our global AVOD service ViX, and we will launch our global SVOD service ViX+ in the second half of this year, which will be further accelerated by this strategic acquisition.”

Commenting on the transaction with TelevisaUnivision, Alan Sokol, Chief Executive Officer of Hemisphere stated: “Pantaya will flourish under TelevisaUnivision’s ownership. Given the highly competitive multi-language SVOD streaming environment, Pantaya’s service is best positioned under an organization that can provide the resources and investment it needs to scale and grow.”

“In addition, Hemisphere’s acquisition of certain Univision Puerto Rican radio assets will be an ideal complement to WAPA, Puerto Rico’s leading broadcast network. Post-closing, we will continue to work closely with the TelevisaUnivision Uforia programming team who, with its deep music expertise, will continue to program the KQ105 FM station.”

The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2022 and is subject to customary closing conditions, including receipt of regulatory approvals in the United States.

Pantaya, a premium streaming destination for world-class movies in Spanish offers a compelling selection of current and classic, blockbusters and critically acclaimed titles from the U.S. and Latin America. Pantaya features first-run exclusive and original titles, including instant access to select movies available on the same day they debut theatrically in Latin America.

The U.S. Spanish-language premium streaming service Pantaya announced today it has started production on the event series The Beautiful Lie (working title) in Mexico City.

Starring and executive produced by Kate del Castillo (La Reina del Sur), with Maxi Iglesias (Valeria), Rubén Zamora (Buscando a Frida), Martin Altomaro (Manual Para Galanes), Edwarda Gurrola (Señorita 89), Lucia Gómez Robledo (Como Sobrevivir Soltero), Daniel Tovar (Mirreyes VS Godinez), and Directed by Hari Sama (This Is Not Berlin).

The six-part drama series is a co-production of Pantaya, Endemol Shine Boomdog, and del Castillo’s production label Cholawood Productions.

The Beautiful Lie stars del Castillo as a gold-medal-winning Olympic diver and Mexican national hero. Her character, Ana Montes de Oca, falls in love with a young musician and goes on a journey of self-discovery—one that society, unfortunately, doesn’t embrace.

“This project is very important to me since it’s a Tolstoy classic that we are recreating and the story continues to be relevant today, says series producer and star Kate del Castillo. “The Beautiful Lie marks the fourth project I have acted in and produced under my production company, Cholawood Productions, the first with Pantaya and Endemol Shine Boomdog. It’s a joy to be able to shoot a production of this caliber in my home country after many years of not being able to work here. No better way to celebrate than with a story that features the beauty, strength, and aristocracy of Mexico with archetype characters that we can all identify with”, she said.

“I feel very happy to be part of this amazing project for several reasons, beginning with the admiration and affection that I have for Kate after having worked with her on two previous projects, and being a colleague who does so much and makes you feel like you can do anything. Her generosity, dedication, and responsibility make you want to be like her, always seeking the best results,” Spanish actor Maxi Iglesias commented.

“I am truly happy and ready to give 100% to this project, once again outside of my country, getting to know a little more about Mexico, its people, and the team. Looking forward to working with Hari, the director, and with the awesome production team that has been assembled for this beautiful project”, he concluded.

“This series has become a very personal project for me, and I’ve been very fortunate that in the words of the producers Endemol Shine Boomdog and Pantaya, this limited series has been considered as almost an auteur film, that I have been able to give a lot of myself to. This is something that makes me feel very happy and touched”, Director Hari Sama said.

“We are truly excited to be kicking into production, and especially with the team of actors and creatives assembled”, Mario Almeida, Pantaya’s Head of Content commented. “We are very happy with how this incredible limited series is coming together, and excited to share this beautiful story with the audience.”

“This adaptation of Tolstoy’s novel contains universal elements that resonate with the lives of any couple today. What happens when love matures, when it is touched by routine, when we decide to perpetuate it or take a 180° turn and obey our impulses? The decisions we make, and their consequences portrayed in the context of a ‘modern’ society, while exploring new ways of surviving as a couple, continues to carry the same taboos and social pressure, mainly on women, two centuries later”, Jerry Rodriguez, Head of Scripted Content, Endemol Shine Boomdog said.

As previously announced, The Beautiful Lie is a modern retelling of Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, one of the greatest love stories of all time and based on the 2015 TV adaptation by Endemol Shine Australia. Acclaimed Spanish writers Almudena Ocaña and Aurora García Tortosa (Elite) are also attached to the series.

Continuing to build upon and secure its industry leadership position with a robust lineup of feature films, original series and other high-quality entertainment offerings for Hispanic/Latino audiences, Pantaya, the premiere U.S. Hispanic/Latino SVOD service, has signed a multiyear joint venture with Corazón Films, producer and co-creator of the hit show El Juego de las Llaves, and of the upcoming highly anticipated show Mi Tío, starring José Eduardo Derbez and Ariadne Díaz.

Under the terms of the deal, Corazón Films will produce premium original series exclusively for the streamer. The first project under the deal is Erotica, a sexy anthology series that explores the realm of fantasy in a similar way as Red Shoe Diaries, but following the POV of female desires that is characteristic of Corazón Film´s previous work, and which will debut a staggering number of 8 new female directors. The CEO of Corazón Films will remain Eckehardt von Damm, and the Head of the new Joint Venture from the Corazón Films side will be Sandro Halphen, former Director of Development of the company.

Paul Presburger, CEO of Pantaya stated, “We are delighted to be embarking on this new partnership with the incredible team at Corazón Films who has a remarkable track record of creating exciting, fan favorite content enjoyed by audiences around the world. Our professional relationship with Eckie and Sandro has been a big part of the success of Pantaya. Together, we developed a working shorthand that is hard to find as well as a great friendship, we are excited to make it official and step into the future together as well as share our new projects with Pantaya subscribers soon.”

Eckehardt von Damm, who is one of the most experienced Mexican theatrical distributors, film producer and entertainment executive in history, commented: “Historically our main business is bringing people into movie theaters, but we have proven that we are equally adept at creating amazing and successful new series narratives for streaming”.

Sandro Halphen added that Pantaya was the first platform that believed in our well calculated forecast from 2017, that eventually distributors who did not make their own content would die. “However, we never expected our content to become central in the structure of our company and we can now proudly say that Corazón is not only the leading independent distributor in the territory, but thanks to this fantastic alliance with Pantaya, we are now, without a doubt one of the most important production companies in Mexico. We expect to continue to grow further and bring back to the Latin world something that has not existed for decades: a successful film and television STUDIO”.

Pantaya has aggressively ramped up production capacity of original content for the service which continues to attract widening audience demographics. To do this, the streamer has secured several new content partnerships including a multiyear direct-to-platform deals with prominent production companies El Estudio, The Lift, and Traziende Films; a co-development and production deal with Elefantec Global; as well as a deal with Fremantle and Fabula to develop a slate new series that will be released on Pantaya. The streamer has also recently partnered with top-tier Latin talent to produce film and television content including Maite Perroni, Mauricio Ochmann, and Fernanda Castillo.

Pantaya, the original premium streaming destination for world-class movies and series in Spanish, announced today that it has signed a multiyear overall deal with the Mexican actress Fernanda Castillo. As part of the agreement, Castillo will star and co-produce original series and films for the company.

Films developed as part of this deal will be produced in tandem with Pantelion Films, Pantaya’s partner company. Castillo and Pantelion previously partnered on the film No Manches Frida which is one of the top grossing Spanish-language comedies and Ya Veremos which is one of the most successful films on Pantaya.

Today’s announcement was made by Paul Presburger, CEO of Pantaya and Pantelion.

“One of the most fascinating and exciting things about my work as an actress is that it allows me to cross borders and tell stories that have an impact on the culture and identity of the viewers. I am honored to be able to create content with Pantaya for the U.S. Hispanic community and for this to be a bridge that allows us to connect to our roots and reflect who we are,” said Castillo. “I am thrilled to be part of their mission to give Latinos the premium television content they deserve.”

Presburger added, “Fernanda is an incredible talent, and her films are consistently fan favorites amongst Pantaya subscribers. We are thrilled to collaborate with her on this new slate of projects and to be continuing the aggressive growth of our talent partnerships and content offerings.”

Pantaya’s partnership with Castillo is the third talent deal for the streamer, who recently announced deals with Maite Perroni and Mauricio Ochmann.

In addition to No Manches Frida and Ya Veremos, Castillo is also known for starring in titles like Dulce Familia, Dia de Muertos, Cuidado con lo que Deseas, Una Mujer Sin Filtro, and Mi Pequeño Gran Hombre which are all currently available to steam on the Pantaya platform.

Pantaya is also home to a robust content pipeline including series like El Juego de las Llaves, Herederos por Accidente, De Broma en Broma, Mala Yerba (Cannábica), and Ana de la Reguera‘s Ana. Additional films in Pantaya’s library include Un Rescate de Huevitos, ¿Y como es el? and Miss Granny. Pantaya currently has six series in production as well as eight upcoming series that will launch on the service before year’s end. Furthermore, last month, along with Pantelion, the company signed significant multiyear direct-to-platform deals with prominent production companies El Estudio, The Lift, and Traziende Films. Under the terms of the deal, each company will produce direct-to-platform Spanish-language films to stream in the US exclusively on Pantaya. Additionally, Pantaya recently signed a co-development and production deal with Elefantec Global to create feature films, original series, and other entertainment offerings for Hispanic/Latino audiences as well as a deal with Fremantle and Fabula to develop a slate of eight new series.

Pantaya, the premium streaming destination for world-class movies and series in Spanish, and Dominican based production company, Caribbean Films, announced today their newest original series Líos de Familia (Trouble in The Building), which wrapped principal photography in the Dominican Republic today.

The series marks the companies’ first co-production united some of the most talented actors and filmmakers in the country.

Starring iconic comedians Raymond Pozo (Que León) and Miguel Céspedes (Que León), with Cheddy García (Trabajo Sucio), the series is directed by Frank Perozo (Colao) one of the most accomplished Dominican actors/directors, with the experienced José Enrique Pintor (Culpables) serving as co-director. Pintor co-wrote the comedic script with Juan Tejeda (Paraiso Para 2); Kendy Yanoreth serves as a General Producer for the show. The series will be released in the U.S. and Puerto Rico on Pantaya in the first quarter of 2022.

Líos de Familia follows the residents of a colorful middle-class building in Santo Domingo in which viewers will see characters from all walks of life. There is the disgraced politician Esteban (Miguel Céspedes) and his wife Cristina (Marta González), who somehow owns two apartments in Building 28. There is the God-fearing bank worker Job (Raymond Pozo) raising his teenage son Josué while pining for his neighbor Maritza (Cheddy García), a hairdresser who works out of home and lives with her own teen daughter Shanty (Rosemary Herrand) and rambunctious mom Yaya (Ana María Arias). There’s also music producer Rodo (Irving Alberti), his young charge, a rapper called Milloneta (Nino Freestyle), and The Girls (including Candy Flow) who make a living via web cam subscriptions, streaming their lives from their 4th-floor apartment. Can this disparate cast of characters become a real family in the end?

“Pantaya has been very successful attracting the large and growing Caribbean audience in the U.S. specifically with movies from Caribbean Films such as Que León, Colao, No Es Lo Que Parece and many others. The logical next step in our relationship was to create an original premium series which we are confident will become a must-watch for the United States Dominican and Puerto Rican audiences,” commented Paul Presburger, CEO of Pantaya.

“Collaborating with Gregory Quinn and Zumaya Cordero from Caribbean Films and the magnificent cast that is part of this series, including the Dominican Kings of Comedy Raymond and Miguel, is just the first step,” he concluded.

“Pantaya’s vision and long-term commitment to Latin American Film is unparalleled in the industry. They understand the nuances of the U.S. Hispanic market and that is clearly reflected in the depth and diversity of their library and originals. We are proud to partner with the Pantaya team again on this occasion,” commented Gregory Quinn, Managing Partner of Caribbean Films.

The talented Caribbean cast of Líos de Familia includes Irving Alberti (Que León), Kenny Grullón (Todas las Mujeres son Iguales), Marta González (Flow Calle), Ana María Arias (Colao), Anderson Humor (No Es Lo Que Parece), Candy Flow (No Es Lo Que Parece), Rosmery Herrand (La Vida de los Reyes), Ulda Capell (La Vida de los Reyes), Brea Frank (Flow Calle), Anyelina Sánchez (Los Leones), Ramcelis De Jesús, Luis Bryan Mesa (Malpaso), recording artist Nino Freestyle, with special guests Jorge Pabón Molusco (Los Domirriqueños) and Television personality Francisca Lachapel (Univision’s Despierta América and 2015’s Nuestra Belleza Latina Winner).

Líos de Familia is executive produced by James McNamara and Anjanette Delgado from Pantaya, and Gregory Quinn and Zumaya Cordero at Caribbean Films.
