Organized by MIP Cancun, the event brought together approximately 150 industry professionals and previewed the market’s upcoming edition, with brands taking on a greater role as strategic partners.

*with reporting by Carolina Mussio and Ana Paula Carreira from Cannes, France.

Latin America’s media and entertainment industry is expected to generate $62 billion in revenue in 2026, representing 15.4% growth compared to the previous year, according to new Omdia projections presented on Monday at the LatAm Partnership Summit Powered by MIP CANCUN, held during Mipcom Cannes.

The findings were presented by María Rúa Aguete, Head of Media and Entertainment at Omdia, who highlighted the region’s growth potential, particularly in streaming and advertising-supported business models.

According to the research firm, online video will generate $35 billion in Latin America this year, compared to $16 billion from traditional television. Other major segments include gaming, at $5.9 billion, music at $3 billion, and cinema at $1.8 billion.

“Latin America is one of the most exciting growth opportunities in global media and entertainment,” said Rúa Aguete. “The region is growing by 15.4% this year, but what makes it particularly interesting is that television remains incredibly popular while streaming still has significant room to expand.”

Omdia forecasts that online video subscriptions will reach 190.7 million in 2026, rising to 208.7 million in 2027 and exceeding 243.5 million by 2031.

Netflix remains the region’s largest individual streaming subscription platform, with 63.8 million subscriptions projected for this year and 73.7 million by 2031. The company is also expected to capture nearly half of Latin America’s online video subscription revenues in 2026.

However, streaming expansion still faces significant structural challenges. According to Omdia, television penetration stood at 91% across Latin America in 2025, compared to 35% for SVOD services and 53% for broadband.

“Latin America does not have a television problem. It has a connectivity challenge,” Rúa Aguete said. “The next phase of growth will depend on making streaming more accessible, affordable and relevant to consumers.”

MIP Cancun Previews Its Focus on Brands and New Business Models

The summit attracted approximately 150 industry professionals, according to María Pérez Bellière, Director of MIP Cancun, who spoke with ttv during the event. The gathering brought to Cannes the curated roundtables and strategic matchmaking sessions that have become hallmarks of the Latin American market.

“We are here today to offer a taste of what we do best at MIP Cancun: curating roundtables and matchmaking opportunities with industry experts,” Pérez Bellière said. “It’s incredible to see the interest Latin America is generating and the region’s potential, especially with all the changes surrounding vertical content, the creator economy and digital platforms.”

The event brought together international executives to discuss the attention economy, IP development, new monetization models and opportunities for collaboration between Latin America and the rest of the world.

“We’re extremely happy because this is a preview of what we offer at MIP Cancun. We’ve welcomed around 150 people, which is an impressive number for an event where we’re bringing our know-how and the right connections to help participants start doing business with Latin America, from Cannes,” she added.

Looking ahead to its next edition, taking place November 17–20 at the Moon Palace in Cancun, Mexico, the market will continue offering one-to-one meetings, roundtables and its Co-Production Bootcamp, while introducing BrandStory Hub, a new initiative designed to connect brands, agencies, producers and platforms around content development and financing.

Its program includes BrandFront: What Brands Want Next, a reverse upfront session where brands will share the audiences, stories and commercial opportunities they are seeking, as well as collaborative meetings between brands and creators within the co-production program. Scheduled for November 18–20, the initiative has already announced the participation of companies including Adidas, PepsiCo, Heineken, Grupo Tova, OCESA Seitrack and Samsung Ads.

“We want to work with brands not only as IP financiers, but especially as strategic partners. It’s about building closer collaboration in IP development and understanding what brands are really looking for,” Pérez Bellière explained.

The executive also emphasized the importance of expanding the traditional ecosystem of buyers, producers and distributors as the industry faces increasingly challenging financing conditions. “With everything the industry is going through, we’re all finding it difficult to secure budgets. We believe bringing new audiences, new partners and decision-makers into the market is essential. We need to create an environment where they feel comfortable discussing ideas and exploring ways to collaborate,” she concluded.

Netflix is set to strengthen its position as the world’s leading subscription streaming service over the next five years, despite a new wave of industry consolidation that is reshaping the competitive landscape, according to new forecasts presented by Maria Rua Aguete , Omdia global Head of M&E at NEM Dubrovnik.

Omdia projects Netflix will grow to nearly 400 million subscribers by 2031, extending its lead over every major streaming competitor and reinforcing its position as the dominant force in the global subscription video market.

At the same time, consolidation among media companies is creating a new generation of streaming challengers. Omdia estimates that a combined HBO Max–Paramount+ platform could reach approximately 175 million subscribers globally by 2031, making it one of the world’s largest streaming services and securing a place among the global top five.

“The streaming industry is entering a new era where scale, profitability and audience reach matter more than ever,” said Maria Rua Aguete.

“Consolidation will create stronger competitors, but Netflix remains uniquely positioned to capitalize on global growth opportunities.”

The proposed combination would create significant synergies between the two platforms. Omdia’s consumer research indicates that 40% of Paramount+ subscribers would also subscribe to HBO Max, while 26% of HBO Max subscribers already take Paramount+, highlighting the complementary nature of the two services and the potential benefits of a combined offering.

While Netflix continues to dominate subscription streaming, the broader video landscape tells a more complex story.

According to Omdia forecasts, Netflix’s global monthly audience will exceed 1 billion viewers by 2027, a milestone few media companies have ever achieved. Yet YouTube’s audience is expected to remain substantially larger, reaching approximately 3 billion monthly active users in 2027.

The contrast illustrates how the competitive landscape is evolving.

“The industry’s biggest battle is no longer simply streamer versus streamer,” said Rua Aguete. “Netflix is winning the subscription streaming war, but YouTube is becoming one of the most powerful forces in television adding more premium content to the platform.”

Omdia expects the next phase of the market to be driven by consolidation, advertising growth, bundling strategies, and increasing competition for consumer attention across both subscription and ad-supported platforms.

As the industry enters this new chapter, Netflix appears well positioned to remain the benchmark for global streaming, even as new competitors emerge and the definition of television continues to evolve.

Key Forecasts:

* Netflix to approach 400 million subscribers by 2031

* Netflix global audience to surpass 1 billion viewers by 2027

* Combined HBO Max–Paramount+ platform to reach 175 million subscribers by 2031

* 40% of Paramount+ subscribers would also take HBO Max

* 26% of HBO Max subscribers already subscribe to Paramount+

* YouTube projected to reach approximately 2.7 billion monthly active users BY 2026

Despite this strong performance, the research firm expects growth to slow in 2026.

Global subscriptions to online video services reached 2.24 billion by the end of 2025, marking a 17.6% year-over-year increase from the 1.9 billion recorded in 2024, according to a new report from Omdia.

Despite this strong performance, the firm forecasts a slowdown in growth during 2026 as major markets approach maturity and platforms increasingly shift their focus toward profitability.

Meanwhile, global pay TV subscriptions continued their downward trend, declining 1.8% year over year to 1.03 billion. As a result, online video now accounts for 68.4% of the combined 3.3 billion subscriptions across both segments worldwide.

For the first time, online video revenues also exceeded those of pay TV. According to Omdia, online video revenues grew 13.5% in 2025 to reach US$176 billion, while pay TV revenues fell 4% to US$170 billion. The figures include subscription and transactional revenues but exclude advertising income.

The company attributes much of the subscription growth to the expansion of ad-supported, lower-priced plans, driven by partnerships with telecommunications operators and pay TV providers.

“Subscription growth of 17.6% in 2025 was the highest recorded since 2021. This increase was primarily driven by subsidized ad-supported plans promoted by telecom operators and pay TV providers,” said Adam Thomas, Practice Leader for Media, Entertainment & Advertising at Omdia.

However, the research firm notes that platforms are beginning to shift their focus from subscriber acquisition to maximizing revenue per subscriber, particularly through price increases on premium ad-free tiers.

In this context, Omdia believes the boost generated by ad-supported plans will have a limited lifespan. While these offerings helped attract more price-sensitive consumers throughout 2025, the company maintains its forecast of more moderate growth in the years ahead.

“It is clear that the availability of attractively priced ad-supported options created a temporary boost in SVOD subscriber growth during 2025. However, this does not alter our long-term outlook, which continues to point toward low single-digit annual growth rates in the coming years,” said Tony Gunnarsson, Senior Principal Analyst for TV & Online Video at Omdia.

According to the firm’s projections, global online video subscription growth will slow to 5.6% in 2026, reflecting an increasingly competitive market and growing saturation across several key regions.

Brazil and Mexico have emerged as Latin America’s leading microdrama markets, reaching a combined 44 million monthly active users (MAUs) in 2025, according to new analysis presented by Maria Rua Aguete, Head of Media and Entertainment at Omdia, at the Conecta Fiction event in Mallorca.

Microdramas are rapidly expanding beyond China and becoming one of the fastest-growing segments of the global media and entertainment industry.

According to Omdia, Brazil reached 24 million monthly active users in 2025, making it the largest microdrama market in Latin America, while Mexico followed with 20 million MAUs. Both markets significantly outperform European countries and are among the largest international audiences globally, highlighting the strong appeal of short-form mobile storytelling across the region.

“Latin America is emerging as one of the most dynamic growth regions for microdramas,” said Maria Rua Aguete. “Brazil and Mexico are already demonstrating the scale that this format can achieve outside China. What we are seeing is not simply the growth of a new content category but a fundamental shift in how audiences consume entertainment on mobile devices.”

Omdia estimates that global microdrama revenues reached $11 billion in 2025 and will surpass $14 billion in 2026. By 2030, the market is forecast to exceed $22 billion, with international markets accounting for nearly one-third of total revenues.

During her presentation at Conecta Mallorca, Rua Aguete highlighted the significant opportunity for Latin American producers, broadcasters, and streaming platforms to capitalize on growing demand for local-language microdrama content.

“Latin America has all the ingredients needed to become a major microdrama production hub,” said Rua Aguete. “The region has a rich storytelling tradition, strong creative talent, and audiences that are highly engaged with mobile video. We expect demand for Portuguese- and Spanish-language microdramas to accelerate significantly over the coming years.””

The growing interest from producers comes despite criticism from some parts of the industry regarding the quality and themes of early microdrama productions.

“Microdramas are a format, not a genre,” added Rua Aguete. “If producers want different stories, they can create them. The format’s early success was driven by billionaire romances and highly addictive storytelling, but the market is evolving rapidly. We are already seeing new genres emerge, including thrillers, crime dramas, reality formats, comedy, fantasy, and family entertainment. Almost any genre can work in a short-form format.”

Broadcasters, producers, and digital platforms across Latin America are increasingly exploring microdramas as a way to reach younger mobile-first audiences and create new monetization opportunities through short-form premium content.

Key Omdia Findings:

• The global microdrama market generated $11 billion in revenues in 2025.

• Global revenues are expected to exceed $22 billion by 2030.

• Brazil is Latin America’s largest microdrama market with 24 million monthly active users.

• Mexico follows with 20 million monthly active users.

• Brazil and Mexico together account for 44 million monthly active users, making Latin America one of the largest international microdrama regions.

• International markets are expected to account for almost one-third of global microdrama revenues by 2030.

• Demand for local-language microdramas is accelerating across Latin America.

• New genres are emerging beyond romance, including thrillers, crime, reality, comedy, fantasy, and family

According to new data presented by Maria Rua Aguete, Senior Research Director at Omdia, at FED Show in Madrid, global traditional TV and online video revenues are set to exceed US$1 trillion by 2030, marking a major structural shift in the media and entertainment industry.

Omdia forecasts that total revenues will grow from US$775 billion in 2025 to US$1.03 trillion in 2030, with growth overwhelmingly driven by digital formats particularly advertising. Online video advertising will be the clear winner and will expand from US$309 billion in 2025 to US$540 billion in 2030, increasing its share of total revenues from 40% to 53%.

Within the online advertising segment, social video platforms such as Meta, TikTok and YouTube will play a decisive role, generating around US$400 billion of total streaming advertising revenues by 2030.

This reflects a fundamental shift towards mobile-first, short-form, and highly personalized video experiences, where discovery algorithms and creator ecosystems are driving both engagement and monetization at scale.

Online video subscription and transaction revenues will grow from US$174 billion in 2025 to US$216 billion in 2030. While still increasing, this segment is entering a more mature phase, with slower growth compared to advertising-led models.

Traditional segments continue to lose share. Linear TV advertising is expected to decline from US$123 billion in 2025 to US$113 billion by 2030, with its share falling from 16% to 11%. Pay TV revenues (subscriptions and transactions) will also decrease, from US$169 billion to US$159 billion, reflecting ongoing cord-cutting and the continued migration of audiences toward digital platforms.

“The industry is undergoing a profound transformation,” said Maria Rua Aguete. “Social video advertising is becoming the dominant force, reshaping how content is consumed and monetized. Meanwhile, traditional models such as linear TV and pay TV are in structural decline.”

As the industry approaches the US$1 trillion milestone, Omdia’s analysis shows that the balance of power is clearly shifting toward digital, with advertising -led by social video- at the center of future growth.

At this year’s Series Mania, Maria Rua Aguete, Head of Media & Entertainment at Omdia, presented new data showcasing how global platforms are reshaping video consumption across Europe.

In conversation with Justine Ryst, Managing Director of YouTube France and Southern Europe, Aguete highlighted that in France, Netflix and YouTube are the top first-choice video services, with Netflix leading (18%) and YouTube following (12%), ahead of traditional broadcasters and pay TV.

The session, “How to Turn YouTube into an Asset for Your Series?”, underlined the evolving role of YouTube in the content ecosystem. While there is significant audience overlap between YouTube and major French broadcasters such as France TV, TF1+, and M6+, the data also shows that a substantial portion of YouTube’s audience sits outside these services, making it a critical platform for incremental reach.

This dual dynamic positions YouTube as both a complementary platform -enhancing reach among existing TV audiences- and a gateway to new viewers that broadcasters may not otherwise capture.

Aguete also emphasized the importance of scale. Globally, Netflix is forecast to reach over 1 billion monthly active users by 2027, while YouTube is expected to approach 3 billion users, reinforcing its role as a powerful platform for discovery, promotion, and audience expansion.

In the UK, the market reflects a balanced ecosystem between global and local players. Netflix (17%), Sky (15%), and YouTube (9%) rank as the leading first-choice services, highlighting the continued relevance of premium pay TV alongside streaming.

Maria Rua Aguete commented: “Scale and reach are critical, but so is complementarity. Platforms like YouTube not only amplify content but also unlock entirely new audiences, while Netflix continues to lead as the number 1 subscription video player. The findings reinforce a key industry shift: success increasingly depends on combining global scale with local relevance, leveraging platforms not just as competitors, but as strategic partners to grow total audiences”.

New primary research data from Omdia reveals that media multitasking is no longer just a Gen Z habit.

More than half of adults aged 45–54 now watch video clips on their mobile phones while watching television, highlighting a major shift in viewing behavior and the growing fragmentation of attention across screens.

According to Omdia’s latest consumer research, 52% of US viewers aged 45–54 reported watching video clips on their phones while watching TV in November 2025, up from 39% in November 2022. The trend is also accelerating among even older viewers: 35% of those aged 55–64 now multitask with mobile video, compared with 20% three years ago.

The findings underscore how the second-screen phenomenon – once associated primarily with younger audiences – has rapidly expanded across older demographics.

Speaking at the Connected TV World Summit 2026 in London, Maria Rua Aguete, Senior Research Director at Omdia said: “Media multitasking is no longer something that happens only among under-34s. Today, more than half of viewers aged 45–54, are watching videos on their phones while watching TV. This is a fundamental shift in how audiences consume content.”

Younger viewers remain the most consistent multitaskers, but their behavior has largely stabilized. Among 18–24-year-olds, the share rose only slightly from 61% in 2022 to 63% in 2025, while 25–34-year-olds increased marginally from 60% to 61% over the same period. By contrast, the strongest growth is happening among older audiences who are rapidly adopting second-screen behaviors.

Rua Aguete added: “The biggest change is not among Gen Z – it’s among viewers aged 45 and over. Multitasking has moved into the mainstream. Audiences increasingly split their attention across multiple screens, which reflects shorter attention spans and the constant pull of mobile platforms.”

For streamers, broadcasters, and advertisers, this shift has major implications for content strategy and audience engagement.

“When it comes to streamers and broadcasters, the challenge is clear: attention is now fragmented. Winning audiences increasingly requires content ecosystems that extend beyond the TV screen and into mobile experiences where viewers are simultaneously consuming video, social media and short-form content. The platforms that succeed will be those that design programming, marketing and engagement strategies with mobile behavior in mind. TV is no longer a single-screen experience”, Rua Aguete concluded.

Microdramas are rapidly consolidating as one of the fastest-growing formats in online video. An Omdia analysis of mobile usage data shows that in the United States, users now spend more time per day watching microdramas on mobile apps than they do watching Netflix, Disney+, or Amazon Prime Video on their phones.

Omdia estimates that global microdrama revenues reached $11 billion in 2025 and will grow to $14 billion by the end of 2026. Of that total, $3 billion will be generated outside China, with the United States now the largest international market.

By 2026, the U.S. will account for 50% of all microdrama revenues outside China, reaching $1.5 billion, underscoring the format’s rapid global expansion.

“Microdramas are no longer a niche experiment. They are becoming a core driver of mobile video consumption,” said Maria Rua Aguete, Head of Media & Entertainment at Omdia, speaking at MIP London. “What stands out is not just revenue growth, but the intensity of usage. On mobile, microdrama apps are generating more daily viewing time than the world’s largest streaming platforms.”

Microdramas outperform streamers in daily minutes watched

Typically one to two minutes long, vertically formatted, and mobile-first, microdramas primarily target women aged 25 to 45, although new genres are also seeking to attract male and other emerging audiences.

Discovery of this content is driven through platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok.

Omdia’s analysis of Q4 2025 mobile usage data from Sensor Tower shows that in the U.S., microdrama apps such as ReelShort generate higher daily mobile viewing time than major streaming services:

– ReelShort: 35.7 minutes per user per day
– Netflix: 24.8 minutes
– Amazon Prime Video: 26.9 minutes
– Disney+: 23.0 minutes

While Netflix continues to lead in monthly active mobile users in the U.S., with around 12 million compared to ReelShort’s 1.1 million, engagement intensity tells a different story.

“Microdramas are winning the battle for attention rather than scale, at least for now,” Aguete added. “This is the metric streamers care about most as they look to grow mobile usage and compete with social video platforms, where daily engagement is approaching 80 minutes.”

With companies like YouTube capturing audiences on both mobile devices and TV screens, streamers such as Netflix and Disney need vertical and short-form content to drive engagement on smartphones.

Strategic implications for global streamers

Omdia’s analysis suggests that global platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ face growing pressure to close the mobile engagement gap with social platforms like YouTube and TikTok, where users spend nearly 80 minutes per day.

“Vertical video strategies, including microdramas, are becoming the logical next step for streamers that want to increase mobile usage without cannibalizing their premium long-form content,” Aguete concluded. “Microdramas are not replacing TV or streaming, but they are reshaping how audiences consume storytelling on mobile.”

Bundling opportunities for telcos

Microdramas also represent an opportunity for telecom companies beyond being just another content trend. These mobile-first, short, and highly addictive videos are low-cost and optimized for daily consumption, making them ideal for the mobile environment.
