Netflix announced the start of production on Operation TAP, Netflix’s first film in Portugal, directed by João Nuno Pinto (Mosquito, 18 Holes to Paradise).

The film, starring Rui Pedro Silva (Remains of the Wind, Maria Vitória), Afonso Pimentel (Memories of Prison, Turn of the Tide), and Victoria Guerra (Impossible Lovel, Gloria), is loosely based on the true story of the hijacking of a TAP flight in 1980, carried out by a 16-year-old boy with a head full of dreams.

An adventure with an ’80s vibe and a modern pace that combines tension and emotion to tell how a night of fear ultimately turned into something no one expected.

Operation TAP is produced by SPi, part of the SP Televisão Group and the production company behind Glória, Netflix’s first Portuguese series, and is written by Pedro Lopes, Miguel Rico, and Marina Preguiça Ribeiro.

Synopsis: 1980. An armed teenager hijacks a plane to Madrid and demands $10 million, turning the passengers and crew into hostages for a night of tension and uncertainty. But what begins as a threat of violence ultimately reveals an unexpected story of empathy and humanity between the young hijacker and those he holds hostage.

Netflix announced the introduction of AI Discover, a new tab on the platform’s TV app, where a small group of members can try new ways to find their next great watch.

Inside the tab, the company will begin rolling out early discovery experiences, starting with one that lets users say what you’re in the mood for and explore from there.

“There’s more to enjoy and discover on Netflix than ever, but what sounds right for a quiet night in may look different for family movie night or a few spare minutes. We’ve spent years refining how you discover, with recommendations tailored to your tastes, from what you Thumbs Up to what you add to “My List.” Now, AI Discover joins the mix as a new way to explore”, the company said.

The first experience within AI Discover is built around themes. Users start by picking from a range of themes, each previewed with a clip from a show or movie. Some are based on feelings (“Something Light,” “Scare Me”), the people watching (“Family Movie Night”), or how much time (“Quick Watches”). Others might reflect what’s new or popular, or what users have been watching lately.

Choosing a theme then brings up matching recommendations. After that, more specific themes surface. Every title has a “Tune Your Recommendations” button, right next to “Play” and “My List.”

“What we’re most excited about is how it feels to use. AI Discover is powered by a new intelligence layer we’ve been building that responds to what members tell us in real time and keeps learning”, the company said.

AI Discover will begin rolling out in the US to members who use Netflix in English on supported TVs.

Bajaria is leaving the company after nearly a decade.

Netflix has announced the appointment of Peter Rice as its new Chief Content Officer, effective October 26. He succeeds Bela Bajaria, who is leaving the streaming company after nearly ten years.

In his new role, Rice will lead Netflix’s global content organization, overseeing scripted and unscripted series, films, live events and other programming across all regions.

Rice brings extensive experience in the entertainment industry, having held senior leadership positions at Disney and Fox across television, film and content operations.

“I want to thank Bela for a decade of dedication, innovation, creativity and leadership,” said Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix.

“She led enormous changes at Netflix. She helped broaden our content offering to include the large-scale expansion of unscripted programming and the launches of live events and sports, in addition to crafting and running a world-class, global slate of films and series. I’m incredibly grateful for everything she’s done to help Netflix entertain the world.”

Sarandos also highlighted Rice’s experience managing large-scale entertainment operations and his longstanding relationships with creative talent.

“Peter is one of the most effective at-scale operators in the entertainment industry. His business acumen is sharp, his talent relationships are exceptionally strong, and his experience across TV and film is deep and broad,” he said.

“He understands what makes stories resonate, and he’s spent his career helping talent do the best work of their lives. I’m excited to welcome him to Netflix as Chief Content Officer as we continue to scale and deliver members more of the stories they love.”

Rice welcomed the appointment and acknowledged Netflix’s impact on the global entertainment business.

“Netflix has fundamentally changed the way stories are made, shared and experienced around the world,” he said.

“They’ve shown again and again that they’re willing to take chances on distinctive voices and fresh ideas, and I’m excited to work with the team to help bring even more great stories to members everywhere. I’m grateful to Bela for building such a remarkable global team, and I look forward to building on everything she and the team have created.”

Extensive Experience Across Disney and Fox

Rice most recently served as Chairman of Walt Disney Television and Chairman of General Entertainment at The Walt Disney Company.

In those positions, he oversaw a broad portfolio of businesses and brands, including ABC, Fox Broadcasting, Fox Sports, ABC News, ABC Studios, Disney Channel, Freeform, FX Networks, Hulu, National Geographic, Onyx Collective and Twentieth Century Fox Television.

His responsibilities included more than 300 programs and approximately 4,000 hours of television annually.

Titles produced or broadcast under his leadership included The Simpsons, American Idol, Modern Family, This Is Us, The Bear, Abbott Elementary, Shōgun and Only Murders in the Building.

Earlier in his career, Rice served as President of 21st Century Fox and CEO of Fox Networks Group, as well as Fox’s lead executive on Hulu’s board of directors.

He was also President of Fox Searchlight Pictures, overseeing releases including Slumdog Millionaire, Juno, Little Miss Sunshine and Sideways.

Rice will now take responsibility for Netflix’s global content strategy and operations as the streaming company continues to develop and distribute programming across international markets.

The company will eliminate around 1,000 jobs globally in its largest round of layoffs since 2022. In a memo to employees, co-CEOs Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos confirmed the move.

Netflix has confirmed a new round of layoffs that will affect approximately 6% of its global workforce, equivalent to around 1,000 jobs, according to the Associated Press, which cited a memo sent to employees on Wednesday by the company’s co-CEOs, Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos.

The confirmation comes days after reports emerged that a new restructuring could affect 5% of the streaming giant’s workforce. The announcement clarifies the scale of the cuts, which represent the company’s largest workforce reduction in several years.

According to the internal memo, the product, technology, legal and human resources teams will be the most affected. The executives explained that the decision is part of a series of organizational changes aimed at prioritizing the company’s resources and supporting its growth plans.

“Decisions like this are never easy and we don’t take them lightly,” Peters and Sarandos said in the memo, adding that their immediate priority would be to support affected employees throughout the transition. The process will vary by country, and team leaders will communicate directly with the employees involved.

The executives maintained that Netflix’s business remains strong and that the company is on track to meet its financial forecasts for the year. However, they emphasized the need to make selective decisions about staffing and resource allocation to continue investing in high-impact areas, improve the service, and drive growth and innovation.

Restructuring Amid Growing Competition

The layoffs come amid intensifying competition among streaming platforms and mounting pressure to sustain growth in an increasingly consolidated market. Netflix maintains a leading position in the industry but faces competition from services such as Amazon Prime Video and Disney+, as the sector continues to undergo consolidation.

Financially, the company reported revenue of US$12.56 billion and earnings of US$3.4 billion in the second quarter of 2026, representing year-over-year increases of 13% and 9%, respectively. However, its third-quarter projections fell short of Wall Street expectations.

Netflix had approximately 16,000 full-time employees worldwide at the end of 2025, according to its regulatory filings. The announced reduction therefore represents a significant adjustment to its global workforce.

The company is scheduled to report its next quarterly results next week, as investors continue to monitor its financial performance and the strategic decisions it is making to sustain growth.

Netflix has appointed Eli Velázquez as Director of Live Sports for Latin America and the US Hispanic market, in another move underscoring the streaming platform’s strategy to expand its presence in live sports.

The executive announced his appointment on LinkedIn, where he expressed his enthusiasm for contributing to the growth of Netflix’s live sports offering. In his post, he also thanked the company’s team for its support during his time as a consultant.

Velázquez brings more than three decades of experience in the audiovisual industry, having spent much of his career at NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, where he worked for 25 years. In September 2024, the company officially announced his departure when it named Joaquín Duro as his successor to lead Telemundo Deportes.

During his tenure at the network, Velázquez rose to the position of Executive Vice President of Sports and oversaw coverage of major sporting events, including the FIFA World Cup, the Olympic Games, the NFL, the Premier League and Liga MX. He also played a central role in the network’s coverage of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Under his leadership, Telemundo became the first U.S. Spanish-language broadcast network to air the Super Bowl in 2022. He also helped drive the partnership with the US Soccer Federation that made Telemundo the exclusive Spanish-language home of the US national teams.

Before joining Telemundo, Velázquez worked at Univision, where he held various production roles. His experience spans team management, major live-event production and the development of sports content for Spanish-speaking audiences.

Netflix has acquired the exclusive rights to the FIFA World Cup 2030 for Spain and Andorra and will broadcast all 104 matches of the world’s biggest football competition live.

The FIFA World Cup 2030 will mark the competition’s centenary. Spain, the reigning world champion, will be one of the tournament’s three host countries, alongside Morocco and Portugal. Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay will also host centenary celebration matches.

Netflix plans to provide comprehensive live coverage of the tournament, with programming featuring a distinctly Spanish approach before each match, at halftime and after the final whistle, as well as a daily highlights show on matchdays and additional content designed to build excitement ahead of the tournament.

As part of the agreement, one match from each matchday will be available free of charge in Spain. In addition, a package of matches will be offered to a national free-to-air broadcaster, including all of Spain’s matches, both semifinals and the final, ensuring broad availability for audiences throughout the country. Further details about Netflix’s partnership with a free-to-air broadcaster to show selected matches will be announced at a later date.

The agreement also expands Netflix’s growing partnership with FIFA. Netflix also holds the media rights in the United States and Canada to the 2027 and 2031 editions of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

“Few events bring people together quite like a World Cup. This year, I was in the stadium when Spain lifted the trophy, and I experienced firsthand the passion, pride and stories that become part of a country’s culture and remain in people’s memories for generations. Now that Spain will be one of the host countries in 2030, we’re incredibly excited to bring every match to fans in Spain and Andorra on Netflix. For Spanish football fans, welcoming the world as reigning champions and being able to watch every match on Netflix will make this a truly unique occasion. What’s more, our growing partnership with FIFA, which includes the 2027 and 2031 editions of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in the United States and Canada, reflects our ongoing commitment to bringing fans closer to the biggest moments in global sports,” said Bela Bajaria, Chief Content Officer at Netflix.

“We are pleased to continue strengthening our partnership with Netflix as we look ahead to the FIFA World Cup 2030. This will be a very special edition of the tournament, and we look forward to working together to bring it to fans in Spain and Andorra. We share the goal of bringing football even closer to fans so that as many people as possible can experience the excitement of this competition,” said Mattias Grafström, FIFA Secretary General.

The agreement adds to Netflix’s growing offering of premium live sports around the world, which includes the 2027 and 2031 editions of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, NFL and MLB games and events, WWE, and some of the biggest boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA) bouts.

Netflix is reportedly preparing a new round of layoffs that could affect approximately 5% of its global workforce, potentially marking the company’s largest staff reduction since 2022. The move could be announced during the week of October 12, although the platform has not officially commented on the reports.

According to sources cited by Los Angeles Times, the cuts could affect around 800 jobs and extend to creative teams, including professionals working in the feature film division. Other estimates suggest the reduction could account for approximately 850 jobs, out of a global workforce of around 17,000 employees.

The potential restructuring comes amid growing pressure on Netflix to accelerate its expansion and improve returns on its content investments. During the first half of 2026, viewing hours on the platform grew by approximately 2% year over year, despite increased spending on programming.

In this context, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos recently acknowledged at the Bloomberg Screentime event that the company needs to accelerate its growth. “Overall, we’re not growing as fast as I’d like, and we’re working to accelerate that pace,” he said.

Viewing trends also reflect intensifying competition for audience attention. According to Nielsen data cited by the US newspaper, YouTube accounted for 14.2% of television viewing in the United States in July, compared with Netflix’s 7.8%.

The company continues to explore new ways to expand its reach and diversify its revenue streams, investing in advertising, live programming, gaming and new distribution models. However, these initiatives come as investors closely monitor engagement trends and the platform’s ability to sustain its growth.

The potential layoffs would add to adjustments in other areas of the business. In August, Netflix shut down its Hollywood-based gaming studio Night School and announced plans to proceed with the closure of Moonloot, its studio in Helsinki.

Netflix’s last major round of layoffs took place in 2022, when the company eliminated hundreds of jobs after reporting its first subscriber decline in more than a decade. In May of that year, it laid off 150 employees, followed by another 300 job cuts in June.

Netflix has not yet confirmed the scope, timing or business areas that could be affected by the latest round of cuts.

Netflix has unveiled the cast and released the first teaser for Rauls, a new Brazilian original fiction series developed by KondZilla and LB Entertainment and produced by Manas Filmes, which explores the world of digital scams from the outskirts of São Paulo.

Starring Samuel Naor in his acting debut, the series also features Giovanna Cremonezi, Traplaudo, MC Chaverin, MC Dricka, MC GP, Nath Fischer and MC Nilo. The cast plays a group of highly connected young people who see digital scams as a shortcut to changing their lives, but ultimately face the consequences of their choices.

The series combines thriller and comedy elements with a portrayal of São Paulo’s peripheral communities, addressing themes including ambition, survival and aspirations for social mobility.

Rauls is directed by Kaique Alves, who also created the series alongside Konrad Dantas, founder of KondZilla, and Felipe Braga. The writing team includes Thiago Dottori, Raul Perez, Donna Oliveira and Teodoro Poppovic.

Episode directors include Daniel Lieff, Fred Ouro Preto, Gabriel Zerra and Thatiane Almeida. Executive producers are Konrad Dantas, Rita Moraes, Felipe Braga, Kaique Alves, Bel Berlinck and Joana Cooper.

According to Alves, casting was a key element in the development of the production, which brings together emerging talent and experienced artists to build its characters and establish the series’ identity.

With Rauls, KondZilla adds another project to its relationship with Netflix. The company is also behind Sintonia, one of the platform’s key Brazilian franchises, while for LB Entertainment, the series marks its third Netflix project following Lov3 and Samantha!.
