One of Globo’s biggest telenovela hits, Brazil Avenue, is now airing in Peru. Through a partnership with TV Latina, one of the country’s leading free-to-air channels, the show premiered at the end of May.

“We’re very pleased to renew our partnership with TV Latina and bring one of our most iconic titles to Peruvian audiences. We hope the broadcast of Brazil Avenue opens up new opportunities for Globo’s stories in Peru. This agreement further strengthens our presence in Latin America – a region that knows and connects with our content,” says Pablo Gighlione, Globo’s Head of International Sales for the Americas and Asia.

Written by João Emanuel Carneiro (All the Flowers, Mania de Você), Brazil Avenue originally aired in Brazil’s prime time slot in 2012 and remains a global phenomenon.

It is one of Globo’s best-selling titles and was nominated for the International Emmy Award for Best Telenovela in 2013.

Recently, Globo partnered with Amazon Prime to stream the telenovela across all Latin American countries (excluding Brazil). Last year, Brazil Avenue received its first international adaptation.

As part of an unprecedented agreement between Globo and Ay Yapim, Turkey’s leading telenovela producer, the adaptation was titled Leyla.

Brazil Avenue tells the story of Nina (Débora Falabella), a young orphan seeking justice. As a child, she lost everything in a scheme devised and carried out by her stepmother, Carminha (Adriana Esteves). Years later, having rebuilt her life, Nina returns to confront her past and take on her enemy. The cast also includes Murilo Benício, Marcos Caruso, Eliane Giardini, among others.

*Produced by Luis Cabrera, from Los Angeles

With more than 35 years of experience in the audiovisual industry, 21 of them at América TV, Eric Jurgensen was appointed General Manager of Latina TV in Peru, a position he assumed in March of this year.

And from his new role, the executive made his way to Los Angeles for a new edition of LA Screenings, where he shared with ttvnews how he is facing this new challenge.

“I am very happy to be returning to Peru. I spent 21 years at América TV and I know the market very well, which helps me a lot. I know the desires, preferences, and habits of the audience. Today I have a new challenge ahead of me, and I gladly accepted it,” the executive began at the event.

“I love what I do, I love TV, it’s a passion for me. I still have the same passion I had 35 years ago when I started, and today I wake up with the same desire to do my best. I’m back recharged, with a new version and 22 more years of knowledge,” he added.

Regarding working on the opposite side of the spectrum from his former team, the executive stated: “What draws my attention is that I’m going to compete with something I created myself, a great team of professionals, and that’s a very interesting challenge. I’m currently working on modifying some things; I’m going to strongly support national production,” he explained.

“Content is relevant; it’s the antidote to everything that digital media wants us to believe, that traditional TV is dying, which it isn’t. We must modify and complement our main screen with digital media, but the main screen will continue to be the most important, and it will reach audiences with unsurpassed reach and advertising effectiveness. I want to continue demonstrating that TV will remain very relevant, as long as you have relevant content,” he added.

By “relevant content,” the executive means “content that people want to see,” and in the case of Peru, he explained, this includes “fiction, locally produced soap operas, formats, the press, and sports.”

“We have El Gran Chef and Yo Soy, singing and cooking formats, a very interesting lineup. We have the Peruvian women’s volleyball league, and we’re doing well with it. We’re also launching entertainment programs and celebrity gossip. And I’m looking for new formats to produce,” he emphasized.

“We have a hub where we produce the Mundos Opuestos format for Channel 13 in Chile, the fourth format we’ve produced from Peru for them. We have the hub ready, and I invite fellow channels to come and produce that format for their countries. We’re developing another format that we’ll launch very soon, which I’m sure will be a success,” he concluded.

In an industry as evolving as the entertainment industry, it is imperative to stay one step ahead of the latest trends and know what the international market demands in terms of content.

To this end, ttvnews presents the Buyers: What are buyers looking for? initiative to learn first-hand about the programming needs of buyers around the world.

This time, we spoke to César Pereira, Programming, Marketing, and Corporate Communications Manager at Latina Peru:

What content would you highlight among those that worked best for the company in 2024?

2024 was an extremely challenging year for Latina Media, which is now a multiplatform content generator, since today we are not only thinking about content for the first screen but also for different screens and all our platforms.

It was a challenging year because we returned to produce national fiction and national soap operas together with Megamedia from Chile, which has brought us excellent results on all our screens and a commercial potential that has surprised us.

We made three telenovelas in 2024, Papá en Apuros, Pitucas sin Lucas, and Pobre Novio, which added clients in a way that does not cut the storyline. We have already closed our fourth national fiction with Mega.

Likewise, we soon started to look for the story, the adaptation of the script, the pre-production, and the telenovela, which we started recording between May and June.

So, there will be more national fiction in Latina during 2025. We are also already thinking about the titles for 2026 in the national fiction slot in Latina. The genre is to go to family comedy with a lot of love with natural conflict between families.

El Gran Chef Famosos, our great culinary competition reality show, will continue through 2025. In 2024, this content will be very generous. We are in season 12, and we are premiering a new season called Pericotitos, in which celebrities arrive with their children to the kitchen of El Gran Chef to spend a thousand and one adventures.

I would also like to highlight Latina’s international hub in 2024. For the last year and a half, we have produced reality shows about coexistence and competition for our client Canal 13, together with Cooking Media.

We have produced three reality shows, Palabra de Honor, Ganar o Servir, and Tierra Brava. In March, we will start production of our fourth reality show in Lima with a Peruvian team, Cooking Media, for our client Canal 13.

In Latina, we returned to sports content and, for the first time in open signal, the National Women’s Volleyball Championship in Peru. Well, from November of last year until June of this year, we broadcast the National Volleyball League on Saturdays and Sundays. There is an audience building. Volleyball is very popular, and we are delighted with the audience’s reception and the sponsors.

What type of content does your audience demand the most?

In 2024, we started an ambitious project: the re-foundation of our brand as a content-generating house. Latina launched its new brand with a value proposition. This is very important for us.

We want our content to have a positive impact on the Peruvians accompanying them. We want our content to have a positive impact on Peruvians, accompanying them, providing them with entertainment, and providing them with information that goes beyond mere news and helps Peruvians make decisions for the good of their daily lives.

So, based on this value proposition, which aims to add value to the lives of our audience, our content follows this path. Very familiar programs. We have recovered that delicious habit with El Gran Chef and done it with national fiction.

We want people to recover that delicious habit of watching television and consuming content as a family, which we are losing because our children today are on their screens. However, the challenge is to make content that makes the family sit down to consume them together.

What kind of content formats or genres will you look for at industry events?

As far as genres are concerned, we want to continue making a lot of entertainment programs. I believe national fiction is our most important content today because it has opened a market for national fiction in Peru since only one channel made national fiction.

Today, we open the opportunity not only to brands but also to production companies, and it would be good if other media in Peru could make more national fiction; it is the way to make the Peruvian content industry grow.

Where do you see the greatest growth potential for the company today, and how is this reflected in your programming strategy?

I always say that this industry has to produce. We have to produce more local content, but think about transmedia production, not only think about the first screen. We are no longer just a first screen. Today, our platforms must technologically continue preparing ourselves to take all our content to different audiences.

We are transmedia. The opportunity is there. Today, we must make content that goes beyond the first screen. Content for all audiences. Making a novel for the first screen is not the same as making it for our YouTube channel, our social networks, or our app.

Our path is in the construction and development of Latina’s multiplatform. In what aspects have we made progress? For example, we have FAST channels in Latina. We launched them two years ago. This has been a construction over the last four or five years.

The transformation started with us, with those who are part of Latina. People who have been making television for many, many years. We put together a digital team with a different vision, and those of us who make television were trained for the digital world.

That is how the FAST channels were born. We have in the app and on the Latina website the Latina 24-hour channel. The first screen programming goes on this FAST channel. Then we have a 24/7 News FAST channel. Not only are the first screen newscasts, but we do special digital programming during 24 hours, we do not stop broadcasting the news on Latina with our digital programming.

We have the Latina Clásicos app, the iconic series Latina did some years ago. 24 hours of programming so that people who enjoy the memory can have the programming and watch it at the time they want, on the screen they want.

We are working on two new FAST channels. The Fast Channel of Yo Soy, a program that accompanied 10 years on the first screen, is a historic and much-loved program. We are also planning another 24/7 sports channel with sports information.

We are reaching agreements with television brands and distributors so that LG and Samsung televisions arriving in Peru automatically have the Latina app when you turn them on. And we are also in talks with Roku, so our app is also in this new digital system.

How do you assess market trends in 2025?

Content is content. When we talk about trends, many people say that television is dying, but television is not dying. It is being consumed on other screens.

Content will always be the king, audiovisual will always be the most important for this business, and today, we see with great expectation many new formats. Fiction or series that you suddenly find on a social network, and you get short chapters of a minute and a half.

This drives us to renew ourselves from the content and technologically be prepared, although it is not easy because the audiences are different. The one who watches the first screen is very different from the one who consumes YouTube. The one that consumes the social network is very different from the one that consumes YouTube.

We have to give them the content according to the codes that the user handles. They are opposite audiences in age. This is the path we are exploring and executing at Latina, which today is a multiplatform and multiscreen content generator for all audiences.

*By ttvnews, from Miami, USA

The evolution in the development of original content is increasingly noticeable for Latina TV of Peru, which has arrived this 2024 to Content Americas, not only as a buyer of audiovisual products but also to offer its content produced by Peruvian talent and has achieved success, both in its country and in other territories.

In this regard, ttvnews spoke with Patricio Hernández, CEO of Latina TV, who commented that the most crucial change is that instead of coming to the markets only to buy cans of telenovelas, they now come to offer their products and formats. “We started to develop our IP, and we aspire that our novela Papá en apuros will be an opportunity in this market so that it can reach different screens.”

They have also brought their reality format, Tierra brava, and the El gran chef format to Content Americas. “We are expanding our line of business, extending the invitation to produce in Latina’s hub, located in the outskirts of Lima, suitable for 24/7 recordings,” said Hernandez.

The CEO of Latina TV highlighted that they are in a transformation process to move from being Latina Televisión. This channel celebrated 41 years of life in Peru, becoming Latina Media. “We are transforming our business model and making a digital transformation, with the idea of ceasing to be what we traditionally were, a television channel, to be an ecosystem of content that we distribute through different platforms: traditional, analog, digital, social networks, web, OTT, FAST channels, and all forms of consumption that exist today,” he said.

Of the total hours of programming that Latina broadcasts, 70% is its own local programming, news, entertainment magazine programs, and, as of 2023, it has added the production of its content created by Latina’s talent, according to Hernández.

This is the case of El Gran Chef, a show that showcases Peruvian culinary culture. In it, chefs are challenged and become an audience phenomenon.

“At the end of October 2023, we returned to the production of our telenovela fiction in alliance with Mega Media of Chile. They provide us with the know-how and the script, and Peruvian artists and professionals take that story, make it Creole, and bring it closer. We have premiered the Turkish telenovela, which has doubled its audience. Another format of our creation is Sábado de familia, a family show”, said the executive.

Latina’s flagship novela, Papá en apuros, is an original Mega Media script from 10 years ago named Papá a la deriva. “A very familiar story that incorporates all socioeconomic groups and all ages in its stories. We took the story from that novel, and a group of Peruvian writers took it and created Papá en apuros, the international version of Papá a la deriva, and it has worked very well,” said Hernández.

A production hub in Lima

One of the most ambitious projects that Latina TV of Peru is carrying out is the production hub that they have created together with Jukin Media to develop coexistence reality shows with a 24/7 recording model located in the outskirts of the capital city of Lima.

According to Hernández, their creation is called Tierra de famosos, a format they sold to Chile’s Canal 13, which premiered under Tierra brava. “This has had the great advantage for Latina, that we are not only co-producing fiction internationally, but we are exporting production with all the expertise that exists in Peru, to produce high quality and low-cost entertainment, which manages to be successful in other territories. In Chile, our reality show has made Canal 13 go to first place in prime time, which makes us very happy”, he said.

The Masked Singer, one of the world’s best-selling competition formats of 2019, continues to expand its legacy.

Latina from Peru joined the multiple international adaptations and premiered its own on February 29, locally titled La máscara. And the magic happened again.

The first show registered a 13.7 rating and reached 596,600 viewers 18+.

Although El reventonazo de la Chola, its competitor from América TV, recorded 15.7 points, the talent show managed to beat the rival network at all times (22:05 to 00:11).

The same happened in the second episode of La máscara, aired on Saturday, March 7, when it averaged 11.1 rating points and reached 509,000 people 18+.

TLa máscara is produced by Rayo en la Botella, and is filmed in Latina’s studios in Lima. Mathias Brivio is the host, and is accompanied by Gianella Neyra, Érika Villalobos, Armando Machuca and Carlos Vílchez as judges.

In the format, 16 celebrities appear hidden in colorful costumes and sing a song, which is commented by the team of researchers while trying to guess who is hiding behind each character. At the end of each gala, the audience present in the studio votes for their favorite character, and the least voted is eliminated, revealing their identity.

The original version, released in 2015 in South Korea as King of Mask Singer, continues to air on MBC and has accumulated more than 230 programs broadcast.

The format is distributed by MBC and Fremantle.
