The management division at Azteca Estudios announced the appointment of Mauricio Piccone as commercial director.

“Mauricio has the ideal profile and experience to join us in this new project and lead this new business unit. I welcome him to Azteca Estudios and have full confidence in his ability and experience for this role,” said Patricia Jasin, VP of Azteca Estudios and TV Azteca Internacional.

With more than 25 years in the media, Mauricio Piccone started out making educational videos and documentaries for the US embassy in Mexico. In 1991 he began producing TV commercials for some of the greatest directors of the day. Years later he began to produce television segments for Dutch TV.

Since the beginning of 2002 he has participated in the greatest successes of the country that have ever been seen, with brands that break paradigms and audience records in Mexico.

In 2010, once the offices of Endemol Shine Mexico and the US Hispanic merged, he was sent to Miami to oversee both territories.

During the following years, he managed to make the Endemol US Hispanic office the benchmark for entertainment production in the market, with productions such as Mira quien baila, Big brother, Masterchef, Yo me llamo, Que viva and The Chosen One with Marc Anthony and Jennifer López, among others.

In fiction he developed several projects, among them El vato, the first fiction sold by the Hispanic market office and winner of an International Emmy.

The next fiction project was Nicky Jam: el ganador, a success for Netflix that represented the consolidation of the production company.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to participate in this new project. I thank Paty Jasin for the trust she has placed in me and I am sure that we will make Azteca Estudios the Premium destination for projects to be carried out in Mexico. The facilities we have are unmatched throughout Mexico: it is a ‘one stop shop’ where customers will find everything they need to solve all the needs they may have. This, together with everything that Grupo Salinas offers, places us in a privileged place looking towards the future”, stated Mauricio Piccone, commercial director of Azteca Estudios.

Last year and in honor of Fernando Gaitán, RCN brought back its original telenovela Betty la fea, considered a classic and one of the most successful titles in the world.

And its rerun was more successful than expected, with ratings between 14 and 15 points, and repeatedly leading Colombia’s prime time.

And following that success, TV Azteca has decided to also bring back the hit telenovela.

The announcement was made by Alberto Ciurana himself, who confirmed the show will premiere on June 1 on Azteca 7.

Originally released in 1999 by RCN, Betty la fea has since been broadcast in more than 180 territories, dubbed into 25 languages, and adapted in 28 countries worldwide.

In Mexico, it aired for the first time on broadcast television in 2001 on Galavisión. It also aired on Las Estrellas and TV Azteca.

In fact, Televisa also adapted the series in 2006 under the title La fea mas bella and the leading role of Angélica Vale and Jaime Camil.

Exatlon returned this week to two key markets, proving once again its popularity in the Hispanic territory.

This Monday, August 19, Telemundo and TV Azteca premiered the third season of their local versions of the format, registering notable ratings both in the US and Mexico.

The premiere on Telemundo became the most watched Spanish-language show in the US at 7:00 pm, reaching 589,000 viewers between 18 and 49 and 240,000 from 18 to 34.

In total, the first episode recorded 1.3 million viewers, surpassing Univision by 4%, according to Nielsen.

In addition, Exatlon US became the most social show of the night on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, behind only El Final del Paraíso, also on Telemundo.

Meanwhile, Exatlón Mexico premiered on Azteca Uno, reaching more than 1.9 million viewers and registering 9.2 rating points, according to data from National Rating.

With these numbers, the format managed to surpass Luis Miguel, the series by Televisa, which recorded 1.3 million viewers.

Exatlon is a Turkish format created by Acun Medya. The show presents an athletic battle between two sports teams, formed by Olympic athletes, famous sports players, celebrities and ordinary people with powerful competitive skills.

The format is distributed in Latin America by Inter Medya, after an alliance signed last year between the two companies.

In addition to Mexico and the US, in the region it also has versions made in Brazil (Bandeirantes) and Colombia (RCN).

Deal or No Deal is returning to Mexico, this time, with TV Azteca.

More than ten years since its premiere on Televisa, the Endemol Shine format is premiering on Azteca Uno under the title ¿Te la juegas? on Monday, August 12.

The local adaptation is produced by Endemol Shine Boomdog and will air Mondays through Fridays at 7:30pm for one week, ahead of the premiere of Exatlon Mexico season 3.

The format originally premiered in Mexico in 2007 on Las estrellas as Vas o no vas, and later in 2009 as Yoo si voy, on the same network.

Distributed by Endemol Shine Group, the format is returning to Brazil as well with SBT, the same network that aired it until 2011 under the title Topa ou não Topa.

These deals in Latin America join the more than 10 markets where the format is making a comeback, including the Netherlands -where it was created back in 2006-, as well as several more in Eastern and Central Europe.

The show also returned in the US after ten years on CNBC with its original host, Howie Mandel.

In Deal or No Deal, each contestant must choose one of 26 suitcases, each containing random sums of money. Then, they must eliminate the remaining ones to reveal their contents. Throughout the game, they will be offered money or prizes in exchange for their suitcase.

If the contestant rejects them all, they get to keep their suitcase and the money. Thus, they will “win” based on if the money in the suitcase was larger than the ones offered in the deals.

This Wednesday, TV Azteca International announced a deal with Ten Time Limited, which acquired a package of 68+ hours of content from the Mexican group, including series like Nothing Personal, Two Lakes and El César.

“Having the chance to collaborate with Time Time, the most important OTT in the Middle East, is greatly satisfying for TV Azteca,” said Berta Orozco, Sales representative for Spain, Africa, Asia and French-speaking territories.

“This alliance allows us to take our premium content to viewers in this territory that’s strategic for us. El Cesar, Two Lakes, Demencia, Nothing Personal can be enjoyed now in Aeabic, Farsi and Kurdo.”

“At TV Azteca we are very happy to have closed this deal with Ten Time for the Middle East and North Africa region for the sale of our series, and thus strengthen our presence in the African territory with super productions of the highest quality,” added Dulce Ávila, Sales Manager at TV Azteca.

The series included in the deal are:

Demencia: A trapped woman, who fights against everything only to realize that the biggest battle is against her own dementia.

Nothing Personal: Due to a chance, Mariana Aragón witnesses the murder of two young journalists, which puts her in the middle of a conspiracy she never imagined and where a criminal organization makes her guilty and addicted.

El César: The Champion who wanted to knock out the world, but fell prey to addictions and power traps. In order to emerge again, he had to descend to hell.

Two Lakes: It is the story of three families that inhabit the same house, but at three different historical moments: 1944, 1975 and 2015. In addition to living in the same house, the three families “share” a chilling presence.
