The deal will allow Televisa to expand its presence in telecommunications and strengthen its convergent services offering.

Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings have reached an agreement to acquire AT&T Mexico for US$2 billion, in a transaction that will significantly expand the Mexican group’s presence in the telecommunications sector and strengthen its position in the connectivity services market.

According to a statement filed by Grupo Televisa with the Mexican Stock Exchange, the acquisition will be carried out by a consortium equally owned by the two companies, each holding a 50% stake.

AT&T Mexico is the country’s second-largest mobile operator, with approximately 24.7 million subscribers at the end of 2025. During that year, the company reported consolidated revenues of MXN 85.4 billion and operating income of MXN 1.4 billion.

The transaction will allow Grupo Televisa to complement its fixed broadband and pay-TV businesses with a stake in one of Mexico’s leading mobile operators. Through izzi and Sky, the company already has a significant presence in connectivity and entertainment services.

The agreement therefore represents a major step toward a more integrated telecommunications offering, with the potential to combine fixed broadband, mobile services, pay TV, and digital platforms.

According to Scotiabank estimates cited by Reuters, Televisa’s share of the combined fixed and mobile subscriber market could increase from 8% to 19%, strengthening its competitive position against América Móvil, the country’s

Alexander will conclude his tenure on December 31, following a career spanning more than four decades in film distribution.

Philip Alexander will retire from his position as Vice President and General Manager of Sony Pictures Releasing Mexico on December 31, bringing to a close a 41-year career with the company and its film distribution operations. He will be succeeded by Agustín Marco del Pont, who will assume leadership of the Mexican operation on January 1, 2027.

Under Alexander’s leadership, Sony’s Mexican operation established itself as one of the company’s strongest contributors worldwide. His tenure also spanned significant changes in the distribution business and the evolution of the local theatrical market.

Before taking on responsibilities in Mexico, Alexander built his career at United International Pictures (UIP), holding positions across several European markets before joining Columbia Pictures. He subsequently led the Fox Columbia Pictures operation in Colombia, based in Bogotá, before taking the helm of Columbia Pictures Mexico.

Among the milestones of his career was the establishment and leadership of Buena Vista Columbia TriStar, a joint venture between Walt Disney Studios and Sony Pictures Releasing in Mexico that operated for 26 years. Throughout his career, Alexander was involved in the release of more than 2,000 international and Mexican films.

In reflecting on his departure, Alexander highlighted the collective effort behind the operation’s achievements and expressed his gratitude to the Sony and Disney teams, as well as the exhibitors and producers with whom he worked over the decades. He also voiced confidence in his successor’s ability to continue developing the business in Mexico.

Agustín Marco del Pont to take over in January

Marco del Pont steps into the role from his current position as Sales Director at Sony Pictures Releasing Mexico, where he has been involved in commercial strategy and relationships with exhibition partners. He joined the Mexican team nearly six years ago, having begun his professional career at UIP Argentina in 2009, with experience in sales and marketing.

The transition has been coordinated with Alexander to ensure operational continuity and maintain the company’s commercial relationships in one of Latin America’s key theatrical distribution markets.

The leadership change comes amid an ongoing transformation of the theatrical business, with release strategies, exhibitor partnerships and title positioning remaining central to the performance of major studios across the region.

Celebrating its 13th edition this year, MIP Cancun is set to welcome its first-ever joint delegation from Japan.

Japan’s international distribution of television content dates back at least to the 1960s. For decades, major Japanese broadcasters, including Tokyo-based key stations, have developed their international businesses independently. At MIP Cancun 2026, ten broadcasters are joining forces under an “All-Japan” initiative to promote and sell Japanese content in Latin America.

This initiative will be led by the Japan Commercial Broadcasters Association (JBA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) and the Broadcast Program Export Association of Japan (BEAJ). JBA is an organization whose members are commercial broadcasters operating television and/or radio services across Japan. Its goal is to promote Japanese IP and expand business opportunities across Latin America’s content market.

The delegation comprises the following 10 broadcasters:

TBS Television, Nippon TV, TV Asahi, Fuji Television Network, Inc., and TV TOKYO, WOWOW INC., BS Asahi, TOKAI TV, MBS, Inc., and Yomiuri Telecasting Corp.

A dedicated “Japan Pavilion” will be established within the matchmaking zone, where each company will have a table for sales meetings and business discussions with Latin American buyers.

While Japan is globally recognized for anime, the Japanese delegation at MIP Cancun will place particular emphasis on live-action content, including television drama, a category that the Japanese government is now specifically seeking to expand overseas.

Maria Perez Bellière, Director of MIP Cancun, welcomed the Japanese participants and highlighted the significance of Japan choosing MIP Cancun as a platform for expanding live-action content in Latin America.

“As IP development and co-productions become increasingly vital in the entertainment market, the industry is reaching a major turning point,” said Perez Bellière. “We have high expectations for this initiative to introduce the appeal of Japan’s new content and firmly establish the ‘Japan brand’ in Latin American countries, with whom Japan shares a long history. We are deeply honored that Japan has united to leverage the unique Latin American market opportunities that MIP Cancun has spent 13 years building here in Cancun.”

MIP Cancun 2026: “Japan Content Showcase” Screening Event

On Wednesday, November 18, from 5:45 PM to 6:15 PM, a special screening event will be held in the Cancun Theater Room. The session will showcase programming from the participating broadcasters, with a primary focus on Japanese drama. It will offer Latin American industry professionals an opportunity to explore the creative range and business potential of Japanese live-action content.

A networking cocktail reception is also scheduled in connection with the event; from 6:15 to 6:45PM, providing an opportunity for participating Japanese companies and Latin American industry professionals to connect and continue conversations around potential business opportunities.

Why the Latin American Market? Why Now?

The Japanese government has positioned the content industry as one of Japan’s core growth industries and has set a target of expanding the overseas market for Japanese-origin content from ¥5.8 trillion (approximately US$37 billion) in 2023 to ¥20 trillion (approximately US$129 billion) by 2033. For live-action content, the government has set a target of ¥0.5 trillion (approximately US$3.2 billion) for the overseas market by 2033.

Latin America also has a long-established culture of serialized television drama, particularly telenovelas, which have been produced in the region since the 1950s and have circulated widely across national borders. At the same time, streaming continues to reshape video distribution across the region, creating additional routes for international scripted content to reach audiences.

By bringing together ten Japanese broadcasters at MIP Cancun this November, the initiative aims to create new business connections between Japan’s television industry and Latin American buyers, distributors and production partners.

EndemolShine Boomdog celebrated the successful conclusion of MasterChef Mexico 24/7 last week, marking a milestone for the Banijay Entertainment format by becoming the world’s first live 24/7 version of MasterChef.

MasterChef Mexico 24/7 premiered on May 17 simultaneously on TV Azteca and Disney+ and concluded with a grand finale on Sunday, August 30. During the season, the program reached 64 million viewers, while seven out of 10 Mexican households followed the series week after week, according to HR Media data reported by ACAM.

In the digital realm, MasterChef 24/7 also recorded outstanding results, with 2.3 billion impressions and more than 51 million interactions across MasterChef Mexico’s social media channels.

“We are thrilled with the outcome of the world’s first live, 24/7 version of MasterChef, and especially proud that Mexico was the country where it became a reality. The Mexican audience’s response and the confidence shown by our partners—TV Azteca and Disney+—were key to the project’s success,” stated Frank Scheuermann, Chief Content Officer at EndemolShine Boomdog.

“It was a major challenge for everyone involved, and we are incredibly proud to see how the audience embraced this new model, connected with the contestants, and immersed themselves even further in the world of MasterChef. We wanted to bring the audience closer to the culinary process without losing the essence or excitement of the competition, and we believe we succeeded.”

Distributed internationally by Banijay Entertainment, MasterChef is recognized by Guinness World Records as the most successful cooking format in the world. With over 70 local adaptations and more than 700 seasons produced, the franchise continues to demonstrate its strength, adaptability, and cultural relevance across diverse markets. This Mexican edition paves the way for expanding the format into a continuous, multi-platform ecosystem.

Produced by EndemolShine Boomdog, MasterChef México premiered in 2015 on TV Azteca and remains a market-leading title. Created by Franc Roddam and first launched in the UK in 1990, MasterChef has been produced in over 70 markets, broadcast in more than 200 territories, and watched by over a billion viewers worldwide. The brand continues to expand its content portfolio with new versions -such as MasterChef Creators in Brazil- as well as a wide range of consumer products and live experiences, reinforcing the franchise’s long-term value and strength.

Glance, a provider of TV and video market intelligence, has announced a new partnership with the Alianza para la Calidad de la Medición Multimedia en México (ACAM), Mexico’s official TV audience measurement body.

The agreement will incorporate ACAM’s audience data into Glance’s TV and video audience analysis, expanding its coverage of the linear TV market and giving international clients greater access to insights into viewing behavior in Mexico.

Established following the best practices of leading Joint Industry Committees (JICs) worldwide, ACAM is the first JIC created in Latin America. The organization provides reliable, transparent and innovative multiplatform audience measurement in Mexico.

ACAM’s current measurement covers 78% of Mexico’s urban population through a panel of 2,000 households. The organization is currently expanding the panel to 3,500 households and 7,200 individuals, further increasing the scope of its linear TV audience measurement.

“Glance has unrivalled expertise in bringing local TV data to a global audience, and we are pleased to be working with them. We look forward to growing our international presence together; it is a great opportunity for both organisations,” said Salma Esteban, Head of Business & Operations at ACAM.

Frédéric Vaulpré, Senior Vice President at Glance, highlighted the relevance of the Mexican market and the opportunity to incorporate its viewing trends into a broader international analysis.

“Mexico is a fascinating TV market, where local productions remain prevalent and popularity is growing fast for international content, from Korean dramas to Spanish series. This partnership gives our clients the tools to deep dive into the nuances of another strong TV market, while understanding the wider global trends,” he said.

The partnership comes after a period of transformation for Glance, which has implemented significant advances in its offering, deliverables and production methods over the past 12 months, with further developments planned for the remainder of 2026.

MIP Cancun has announced the launch of BrandStory Hub, a new platform designed to bring together brands, agencies, producers, creators, studios, platforms and investors to accelerate the development, financing and monetization of intellectual property (IP).

Developed in collaboration with Roadmap and Cave76 as strategic partners, the initiative aims to strengthen the market’s evolution as a hub for new business models centered on branded entertainment, creator-led content and innovative financing opportunities.

“Brands are playing an increasingly important role in content creation, audience development and financing. Over recent editions, MIP Cancun has progressively expanded the conversation beyond traditional buying and selling to explore the growing intersection between brands, creators, platforms and content companies. BrandStory Hub is the natural evolution of that journey, creating a platform for new partnerships around IP, financing and growth while reinforcing MIP Cancun as Latin America’s hub for IP development and funding,” said Maria Perez Bellière, Director of MIP Cancun.

A dedicated programme within MIP Cancun 2026

BrandStory Hub will take place from November 18-20 as a dedicated programme within MIP Cancun 2026, which will be held from November 17-20 at the Moon Palace Resort in Cancún, Mexico.

The programme will be built around four flagship initiatives:

BrandFront: What Brands Want Next, a reverse-upfront format where brands and agencies will present the audiences, stories and partnership opportunities they are actively seeking from producers, studios, creators and platforms.

Brief-to-Business: Brands Meet IP Creators, integrated into the MIP Cancun Co-Production Bootcamp, connecting brands and agencies directly with producers, creators and studios to explore commercial opportunities and creative partnerships.

Leadership Summit: The Future of IP Development, Funding & Monetization, an invitation-only gathering bringing together senior executives from brands, agencies, content companies, platforms, investors and technology companies to discuss the future of the IP business.

Insight & Inspiration Sessions, a curated programme of conversations, market insights and case studies focused on audience behavior, creator ecosystems, platforms and emerging monetization opportunities.

Major brands already confirmed

The inaugural edition of BrandStory Hub has already secured participation from leading international and regional brands, including Adidas, PepsiCo, Grupo Tova, Heineken, OCESA Seitrack and Samsung Ads. Organizers also confirmed that additional brands, agencies and strategic partners will be announced in the coming months.

With this initiative, MIP Cancun is expanding its value proposition beyond the traditional content marketplace by fostering collaboration across the entire content ecosystem, bringing together producers, distributors and platforms with brands, agencies, investors and technology partners.

The launch of BrandStory Hub further reinforces MIP Cancun’s positioning as Latin America’s leading hub for IP development, financing and monetization. Early Bird registration for the MIP Cancun 2026 Content Market and Co-Production Market will remain open through July 31.
