GoQuest Media, the global independent content distributor, has been appointed as Jiostar’s exclusive partner for content distribution across Africa. The agreement strengthens GoQuest’s long-standing expertise and proven track record in the African market.

Through this partnership, GoQuest Media secures exclusive rights to Jiostar’s linear programming portfolio, reinforcing its position as a leading player in international content distribution. The company had already set a precedent in Africa by exclusively handling Disney Star’s distribution, bringing Indian entertainment to new audiences.

“Africa has long been a key market for us. Jiostar’s decision to partner with GoQuest highlights the strength of our experience and relationships in the region. The fact that major global players prefer to trust us instead of building internal sales teams is the ultimate recognition of our capabilities. We are excited to expand Jiostar’s presence in Africa and to continue bridging world-class content with audiences that deeply connect with it,” said Vivek Lath, Managing Director of GoQuest Media.

A Jiostar spokesperson added: “Africa is a priority market in our global growth strategy. With a first-class library and a consumer-centric approach, our brands, shows, and characters have consistently grown stronger in the region, becoming household names that resonate with audiences. We have launched two tailored channels, one in English and one in isiZulu, driven by our belief in storytelling’s power to unite cultures and languages. By appointing GoQuest Media as our exclusive distributor, we ensure that our portfolio grows with precision and market expertise. Their proven track record gives us full confidence to strengthen our presence and unlock new opportunities in the region.”

Globo is participating in MIP Africa, one of the leading events in the audiovisual sector on the continent, which brings together major industry players. MIP Africa marks the international launch of the telenovela Queen of Myself.

For the second consecutive year, the company is presenting a diverse portfolio in partnership with Côte Ouest, from Mediawan Africa, celebrating a collaboration of over 25 years.

Strengthening its presence in the region, Globo is bringing exclusive premieres, successful telenovelas, series, documentaries, and formats to the event. On September 2, at the Onyx Hotel, the company will also host a lunch to showcase its main products and presence in the territory.

International launch

MIP Africa marks the international launch of Queen of Myself, a telenovela written by Rosane Svartman (Never Give Up, Total Dreamer) and directed by Allan Fiterman.

The story follows Leona (Clara Moneke, from Never Give Up), whose life is transformed by her relationship with Sofia (Elis Cabral), a seven-year-old girl for whom she becomes a nanny. Their encounter sparks a journey of affection, care, companionship, and human connection.

Featuring strong female characters, Queen of Myself blends comedy, drama, romance, adventure, suspense, power struggles, and plot twists.

Highlights from the catalog include the new version of Anything Goes, adapted by Manuela Dias (A Mother’s Love, Justice) and directed by Paulo Silvestrini (Never Give Up).

Exploring themes such as ethics, character, and family relationships, the telenovela became a hit with Brazilian audiences and was Globo’s highest-grossing prime-time production. As part of the broadcaster’s 60th-anniversary celebrations, the show revisits one of Brazilian drama’s greatest classics, originally written by Gilberto Braga, Aguinaldo Silva, and Leonor Bassères and aired in 1988.

Naturally, Côte Ouest, Globo’s long-standing partner for over 25 years, is responsible for distributing these titles across the continent and beyond.

Other featured titles include series like Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Justice, and Dissident Archangel, along with the documentaries Rio-Paris: The Tragedy of Flight 447 and The Robinho Case.

“Globo’s presence at MIP Africa highlights our commitment to the African continent, where we have built a strong track record. We want to broaden the reach of our stories and strengthen our connection with audiences. Titles like Queen of Myself and the new version of Anything Goes showcase the strength of our storytelling and its ability to resonate with different realities and cultures around the world,” says Rodrigo Nascimento, Head of International Sales – EMEA of Globo.

“Just as Côte Ouest believed 25 years ago in the potential of Globo’s content, which serves as a bridge between the peoples of Africa and Brazil, Côte Ouest will continue to add value to the content produced by Globo. By making them accessible to all audiences in Africa through dubbing these titles into both English and French, before offering them on various markets, Côte Ouest will use its expertise to ensure that these incredible stories reach African and European markets.” declared Jonathan Lett, Managing Director of Côte Ouest.

Globo is also reinforcing its expertise in both scripted and unscripted formats, with titles that have already captivated international audiences. Among the scripted formats are telenovelas like Her Own Destiny, The Life We Lead, and Trail of Lies, as well as the series Justice. On the unscripted side, the company is bringing variety shows such as Family Size and Making The Party, along with culinary competition shows Make It Sweet and What a Wonderful Cuisine Class.

“The inclusion of both scripted and unscripted formats in our portfolio reflects Globo’s focus on delivering versatile content that can be adapted to different markets. These are stories with strong creative foundations, ideal for local adaptations. We understand that our series and telenovelas go beyond the boundaries of a ‘finished product,’ and by offering them in various formats, we enable our partners to tailor them to their specific needs, opening up new commercial opportunities”, adds Isadora Filpi, Content Distribution & Partnerships of Globo.

Each virtual market lasts three months and specifically promotes content available right away.

The organizers of the signature Discop film and television content markets, Basic Lead, are deploying a new initiative to strengthen and expand business in sub-Saharan Africa from the comfort of a desktop.

With the industry easing into the habit of distance appointments, two annual virtual markets will be launched to complement the organizers’ physical markets in Abidjan and Johannesburg.

Each virtual market lasts three months and specifically promotes content available right away and under favorable terms. During that period of time, buyers can screen trailers and full-length episodes online and have access to personalized voice/email/chat assistance to seek answers to their questions and request appointments with rights-holders.

Content will be supplied by the top 100+ global and regional content distributors who service sub-Saharan Africa and already attend Discop’s physical markets. To guarantee well-matched and well-prepared meetings, the same appointment-setting discipline Discop is known for will be applied to promote content and convert initial interest into confirmed appointments.

Over the next five months, 1000+ individual buyers in 49 African countries will be surveyed, one by one. They represent 400+ public and commercial broadcasters, pay TV operators and streaming platforms. Urgent programming needs will be at the center of a 20-minute video conference piloted by Discop’s reinforced research and networking teams.

Two virtual markets are scheduled in 2020:

Virtual Market 1: 1 May to 31 July
17 countries in Francophone Sub-Saharan Africa

Virtual Market 2: 1 August to 31 October.
32 countries in Anglophone and Lusophone Africa

A newly revamped and focused Discop Johannesburg program will see a scope that goes beyond content buying and selling.

In line with Discop Market’s vision to promote the commerce and co-production of multi-screen entertainment content across Africa, the upcoming edition, to be held from 20 to 22 November, will put a strong emphasis on African television projects in development, partnerships with South Africa, the booming animation sector, and the export of content produced on the continent.

As co-production in international television expands, Africa can play an increasingly influential role in getting projects off the ground.

Competitive incentive programs are already available in countries such as South Africa, Kenya and Senegal, and this year’s edition of Discop Johannesburg will focus extensively on African content producers, with solid works in progress, to reach out to key players in Africa and beyond who could bring added value to projects in development.

“Not since the invention of television has Africa exercised such an influence on the creation of original multiscreen content,” said Patrick Zuchowicki, President of Discop. “This year’s Discop Johannesburg will see three times more projects with cross-border potential brought to the market by African producers than in 2018.”

The renewed focus on works in progress and fostering co-productions will be brought to life via the side-bar Discopro program that will see more than 50 speakers, including many intrepid disrupters, on stage for panel discussions around the eight key pillars of the industry’s current transformation.

The pillars are: What buyers actually want; Exporting African content; The content monetization challenge; Stop fake news; Empowering women in media; The united world of animation; The nascent and super fast-growing video gaming competition sector; Why dubbed content is so important.

In an important addition to the program, sixteen works in progress of international standard and with a set delivery date will be pitched by their producers in front of key regional and international industry players that can help these projects take off. They will be regrouped into four categories: TV series, Formats, Documentary, and Animation.

Sponsored by The Africa Channel, a series of masterclasses and a panel discussion led by experts from around the world will address how independent producers can export their content and best adapt to the fast-paced world of multicultural television. Four sessions will provide a rapid course of study on what makes a project aimed at multicultural audiences actually sell in today’s challenging environment.

“Broadcasters, premium cable channels and streaming platforms from around the world are starting to recognize the value of African content,” said Narendra Reddy, General Manager, The Africa Channel.

“However, producers on the continent need to be proactive and actively participate in creating opportunities for distribution. Furthermore whilst production should continuously evolve to a global standards in terms of technical quality, producers should endeavor to develop stories that are authentic, local and culturally specific”

With many high-profile international TV series being shot in South Africa, a tutorial track will put under the spotlight the country’s rebates system and examine the benefits available through coproduction treaties that exist between South Africa and The United Kingdom, France, Germany, Canada and Australia.

Intertwined in the general agenda, presentations by the likes of SES, ITV, Pomegranate Media, Agence France Presse, Al Jazeera, Ubongo, Shoot Cameroon and Vubiquity will explore future opportunities and deliver further insights on the state of the industry.
